One of the most important things we can do as we age is to stay connected with others. Maintaining social relationships and finding ways to interact with others on a regular basis helps keep our minds sharp and our spirits high. When we’re isolated, we’re more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Staying connected can be as simple as making sure you schedule time for activities you enjoy or joining a club or organization.
It’s also important to keep your body healthy as you age. Eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly can help you stay active and independent for longer. Taking care of your health now will pay off later in life.
As we age, it is inevitable that both our physical and cognitive health will gradually decline. No matter how well we take care of ourselves, our bodies will begin to shut down when we reach a certain age. For many people, old age is something to be feared and dreaded.
But it doesn’t have to be this way! There is a theory called “successful aging” which posits that there are three main factors which contribute to a positive experience of aging:
1) Good physical health
2) Good cognitive health
3) An active and engaged lifestyle
If you focus on these three things, you can age successfully!
Of course, good physical health is important. You want to make sure that you are maintaining your fitness levels and eating healthy foods. As you age, your metabolism will slow down and you will become more susceptible to diseases. But if you take care of yourself, you can stay fit and healthy well into your golden years.
Various people will have unique perspectives on what it means to age successfully. Theories of successful aging that experts have come up with try to explain the meaning of aging well. However, for some individuals, aging is simply a number denoting another phase of life and should be wholly enjoyed. For example, the Model of Personal Development criteria (self-acceptance, positive relations with others, autonomy, purpose in life, personal growth) (Nussbaum, 2000, p. 332) falls under Maslow’s tiers of love/belonging, esteem and self-actualization. While the Study of Successful Aging discovered that areas on Maslow’s basic physiological needs were components for successful aging.
Both the Model of Personal Development and the Study of Successful Aging identify different areas as important for successful aging; however, both theories are based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The Model of Personal Development focuses on self-acceptance, positive relations with others, autonomy, purpose in life, and personal growth, which fall under Maslow’s higher tiers of love/belonging, esteem, and self-actualization.
The Study of Successful Aging identifies areas such as health and social support that fall under Maslow’s basic physiological needs. Although the two theories focus on different areas, they are both based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and are therefore useful in understanding successful aging.
Diminished eyesight is an excellent illustration. When one grows older, their eyesight typically deteriorates. An elder who enjoys reading books may no longer read without glasses. To make up for their reduced vision, they might use reading glasses or acquire big print novels to compensate for their loss of sight.
Similarly, an individual who can no longer hear well may use a hearing aid or other assistive device to help them communicate effectively. There are many different theories on aging, but the general consensus is that aging is a process that begins at birth and continues until death.
Aging is not necessarily a bad thing – in fact, it can be quite beautiful.
Successful aging is all about how one adapts to the changes that come with growing older. It’s about making the most of what you have and enjoying life despite the challenges that come with age.
