Halloween Frost: A Mythos Academy short story by Jennifer Estep
Gwen is a champion of a Greek goddess who fights Reapers of Chaos. She attends a school for decedents of ancient warriors. When she and her friends go out “trick-or-treating” downtown, things turn ugly when a Nemean prowler attacks and Gwen is forced to fight it off with the help of Logan, a Spartan descendent.
**I’ve see this series around, but wasn’t sure if I wanted to read it. After reading this, I totally want to.
The Fat Cat by Edie Ramer
Tory is a witch who goes to an animal shelter to adopt a kitten. While there, she keeps hearing a voice that no one else hears. Turns out it’s coming from Samson, an ugly, smelly cat – they can hear each other’s thoughts. On Halloween Tory does a spell to make Samson young and not so smelly, but it doesn’t seem to work. Then Tory gets news that her friend Nikki is in major trouble and being held by a warlock. Tory and Samson go to save her, and something amazing happens.
**This was a little different, but I enjoyed it and did not see that ending coming.
Medium Rare by Nancy Haddock
Colleen is a psychotherapist who can see and talk to ghosts. Just do NOT call her a medium. She helps with hauntings, resolving issues with the haunter and the haunted. She notices something strange is going on, causing all the ghosts to become afraid and restless. When she’s asked by local ghost hunter, Brickman, to help with a haunting, she reluctantly does so. She discovers that a very bad spirit is returning to claim many of the ghosts in the town. There is only one way to stop him, and it falls to Colleen to pull it together.
**I liked the mixture of Brickman’s scientific and Colleen’s paranormal take on the situation. And I loved Colleen’s dead grandpa.
Sweet Demon by Misty Evans
Kali Sweet is a vengeance demon who works for the Council, a Justice Department for the supernatural world. When she goes to a club owned by a king vampire to tell him to stop blood slave trafficking, she runs into Rad, the guy who left her at the altar. That’s not the worst of her problems, the king vampire doesn’t like being told what to do.
**I love Kali, she’s a total badass. I thought the story was really interesting, and would love to read more about Kali and Rad.
Sian’s Solution by Dale Mayer
Sian, a vampire, goes undercover to rescue her boyfriend from a vampire blood lab.
**I liked how Mayer wrote this as a countdown, it added a little more intensity to it.
A Bit of Bite by Cynthia Eden
Ave is a paranormal liaison for the Crossroads. When she goes to investigate a journalist found dead, she runs into Julian, an alpha wolf, at the crime scene. She has to find out who’s killing people, and why they’re pining it on Julian.
**This was action packed and sexy with a nice twist
Sinfully Sweet by Michelle Miles
Chloe is a witch who owns a bakery and bakes a little extra something into her pastries. She’s been in hiding among the humans, but then an attractive incubus shows up to warn her that others are after her.
**I wasn’t quite sure what to think of this one at first, but I ended up really liking it..
A Night of Forever by Lori Brighton
In 1859 England, Mary wants a husband with money and a title. While visiting her sister and brother-in-law, she meets Aiden, a mysterious and handsome man. Even though he doesn’t have great wealth, she’s still drawn to him. When the two of them are kidnapped, she learns what he truly is.
**First of all, I liked the time period. Second, I love Mary and Aiden’s chemistry. I must read more of them!
Feel the Magic by Liz Kreger
Jessica is human who wants to be a cat, says she was born in the wrong body. She enlists the help of Jenna, practitioner of magic to help her. Things take an unexpected turn when Jessica’s pimp comes for her.
**This made me laugh, but I don’t know if it was meant to be funny. I don’t mean that in a bad way though.
Breaking Out by Michelle Diener
Kel has been imprisoned for 3 years trying to control her powers, until one day another prisoner, Nate, inadvertently frees her while he’s breaking out. Nate is a healer who knows he needs to get his friend Giles, who reads minds, out of there. The three of them try to figure out what the doctor wanted with them, and what exactly Kel is.
**I know Diener wasn’t use to writing this type of genre, but I think she did a great job. I’d love to read more of Kel.
Ghostly Justice: Seven Deadly Sins novella by Allison Brenna
Detective Grant is still grieving the loss of his girlfriend when a young woman turns up dead from being a virgin sacrifice. So he calls Rafe ad Moria, hunters looking for the seven deadly sins demons that were released from hell.
**This is definitely a series I would love to get into. And it’s one of my favorites from the anthology.
