Jazz Bashara is a criminal.
Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent.
Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down. But pulling off the impossible is just the start of her problems, as she learns that she's stepped square into a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself—and that now, her only chance at survival lies in a gambit even riskier than the first.
I’m one of many who went absolutely gaga over The Martian, so it should be no surprise that Artemis is one of my most anticipated books of 2017.
Instead of Mars, Weir transports us to the moon where humans have built a city called … you guessed it … Artemis! I really like the setting and how plausible it feels. I would totally vacation on the moon! Hell, I’d vacation anywhere off this planet. Here we follow Jazz, a petty criminal who smuggles contraband, striving to make a better life for herself. Unfortunately, she gets mixed up in a deadly game of sabotage and hostile takeovers.
This is an entertaining read full of danger, humor, and edge-of-your-seat moments. I love when science fiction actually incorporates science into the story that makes it feel authentic, something Weir does well. There are a couple of times it feels a tad slow going, but it’s not too bad. Especially with Jazz on the job.
Jazz is a great protagonist and a bit of an anti-hero with plenty of snark. She can be brash and apathetic, but that’s part of what I love so much about her. I’d totally get a drink with her. Don’t let her fool you, though, the woman is super intelligent. Good thing, because she finds herself in some sticky situations.
There’s also an amusing cast of characters in Jazz’s life. I enjoyed them all, but mostly Dale and Svoboda. Those two with Jazz can be pretty entertaining. Oh, and Kelvin! It’s really cool the way he’s integrated into the story and how his role unfolds.
Overall, Artemis is a fun and engaging book. I look forward to reading what Weir writes next!
I still need a bookdate with The Martian, but wow, this one sounds fab, too.
Enjoyed the review, Christy!
I still have to read (and watch) the Martian, but am adding this to the tbr now too. Sounds great.
This does sound like an entertaining, edge-of-your-seat read! And the characters sound great too. Glad you liked all of it so much! And as a side note, I have no desire to leave the planet. It just sounds terrifying!
I don’t think I know about this one but I heard about the author. Not sure it’s for me but it looks good
I haven’t read the Martian, I know, shame on me! Now, I really want to and read this book after! Sounds so cool. And yes, who doesn’t want to live there. 🙂
This sounds like something a bit different and I like that. I’ll have to pick this up. I did like Martian but I didn’t love it for some reason, maybe I will like this one better.
I enjoyed this one as well and listened to the audio. I will share my thoughts in 2018..LOL
I loved the Martian and can’t wait to get to this one!! Glad you enjoyed it – great review!!
I never read The Martian, but I am thinking I need to rectify that. Thanks for putting this book on my radar.
Sci-fi like this hasn’t been my cup of tea for a couple of years now — I think I overdosed on it for a bit. But I am sooo curious about Weir and his books. So many bloggers like you have nothing but good things to say about this… so who knows, maybe this should be next for me to read! Great review!
oh I’ll be adding the Martian [how come I haven’t read that one yet??] and this one! Great Review!
I am going to have to pick up The Martian and soon! This sounds amazing!!!
Jazz sounds fun, and a city on the moon? Pretty sweet. I like the sound of this one (I never read The MArtian but saw the movie).
I haven’t read either of these, but I do hear he has funny books that include science well. I’m glad this was another good one for you!
I saw the Martian but haven’t read the book. I want to though and then dive into this one. This sounds good with snark! WIN! Plus, science! 😀 Yea, I do need these books in my life.
I did not go gaga over The Martian. I liked it but not as much as I had thought I would. I do want to give this one a try since you make it sound so good.
I was wondering what you were going to say about this one! I was a bit more harsh but boy, did I love Jazz and her snark. I actually loved the whole cast of supporting characters and I was bummed when a certain one got the ax. He was kind of cool! I had visions of Trent dancing in my head when I read him 🙂
Awesome review girl!
I’ve been debating about trying this one. I LOVED The Martian, but wasn’t sure if he would end up as a one-hit wonder. It sounds like that isn’t the case. I will grab this from the library. Great review.
That does sound pretty good.
Sounds like Andy Weir is a bit like Mira Grant when it comes to getting into the science and technical stuff. I STILL haven’t read The Martian, but I think I’m going to have to after this rave review. 🙂
Ooh this book looks really good! The blurb really caught my attention on Netgalley 🙂 Glad you liked it!
