When bounty hunter Liam Quinn discovered that Claire Connolly was a Sensitive and infected with magic, he should have turned her in to be locked up in the prison district known as Devil’s Isle. Instead, he helped her learn to control her power and introduced her to an underground group of Paranormals and humans who know the truth about the war and those who fought it.
Now the weight of Liam’s own secrets has forced him into hiding. When a government agent is killed and Claire discovers that Liam is the prime suspect, she races to find him before the government can. But she’ll discover proving his innocence is no simple matter. Their enemies are drawing closer, and time is running out....
Mystery, murder, and magic! Oh, my! This picks up a few weeks after the battle in the previous book, and Claire’s little group has dispersed. Liam is gone, while Claire keeps a low profile in the city, not knowing where he is or if he’ll come back. When there’s a murder and the evidence points to Liam as the killer, the gang is gets back together to prove otherwise. This isn’t a simple murder case, no. It’s way more sinister and dangerous.
Claire has certainly come a long way since the first book. She’s always been a strong heroine, but she’s noticeably more confidant and badass in The Hunt. Honestly, for me, the gold in these books are the scenes with Claire, Liam, and Gavin. The Quinn brothers bantering makes me smile, and even more so when Claire is in the mix. I also love that she’s right there with them, even leading at times when shit goes down. Yeah, they all tease her about being reckless, but they know she can handle her own.
I like how Liam and Claire’s relationship is handled. Him dipping out the way he did impacts Claire, but she doesn’t come across as angsty or desperately pining over him. She even handles the situation well when he comes back around. It isn’t like Liam is a dick or anything, he’s just dealing with some major changes, and Claire manages it well.
I also enjoyed the mystery and the way everything unfolded with some interesting surprises. It did, however, feel slower at times, and then a bit rushed at the end. It was like we’re really getting into the good, exciting stuff, shit is going down, and then boom, the end. It reminded me of a couple of guys I used to know.
Overall, though, The Hunt was good and left me wanting to read the next book.
So glad it was a good one even with the pair separated. I like what you’re saying about Claire working through things on her own. Still need to start this series.
Yep, at the end I was like nooo wait, that’s it? Ugh, and now we wait. I do love Claire.
I can understand your feeling. I had a good time with this one. I’m curious to read the next one!
I really did like that things were progressing and moving forward. Claire has grown a lot and it was nice to see their relationship follow as well. It does make me curious where the author is going with it all though. Of course a war but what else? This is turning out to be a fun series, not a perfect one, but a fun one.
I was very disappointed with the second book, but I’ve been hearing such wonderful things about this third book so I think I’ll read this one. I’m especially glad to hear the relationship is handled well.
Can’t wait!
Glad this was a good addition to the series. Love when a book makes me want the next one!
I’ve read a book or two of hers and loved them. Makes me want to read more.
I have not had the pleasure of reading this series. Glad the you enjoyed it and you are eagerly waiting for the next book.
I like the way they are handling the relationship. Sounds very mature. Oh I have this series on my wishlist and I’m glad you want to continue!
I need to try this series. Great review.
Don’t you just hate that!? I hope the wait for the next book isn’t that long. This is one series that I would love read. 🙂
Arggh endings like that try my patience! This sounds like a great series, though — I’ll have to add it to my list 🙂
Ooh this sounds great! Magic, murder, and mystery, always a good combo 😉 And I do like the sound of the MC becoming more confident and badass and of the bantering and also the relationship.
I’m happy you enjoyed this, Christy! You know, I haven’t read Neill and I’d thought to start with this series since I could get in on it early and not be so many books behind. And now it’s at book 3?!? *sigh*
Sounds like a great series. I’m not sure I can handle the cliffhanger though. Glad that you enjoyed it. I hope the next book is even better. Awesome review! ?❤️??
Glad you enjoyed this one despite the inconsistent pace!
I haven’t read it but I’ve been reading great things about this one.
I agree with everything you said, Christy! I need to review both this and the 2nd book… I have been slacking on review-writing lately.
This whole universe is very well done, and I can’t wait to see what will happen next. Great review 🙂
Mystery, murder, and magic! That sold me already. I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about this book and I’m glad you enjoyed it Christy 🙂
I really want to read this series simply off the strength of writing style of the earlier books in the Chicagoland Vampire series, but there are so many mixed reviews on this series that I’m left in limbo
I think character separation is needed too with series novels, I like seeing them grow as individuals especially when the romance developed quickly..you’ve got brilliant taste in urban fantasy books Christy, would love to see a recommendations post one day if you could swing it. Brilliant review <3
Great review. I have got to get my hands on this series.
I loved the first two books in this series, but I haven’t made it to this one yet. I bought the audio, so I’m sure I’ll be listening to it soon. I’m glad to see you’re pleased with how Claire treated Liam after what happened in the last book. I’m sure he was pretty devastated with those turn of events.
Great review!
I like a character with noticeable and well-earned development like this. Claire does indeed sound badass!
