Clara Morgan is living the dream, if you can call rebranding hotels that are desperate for a new life and running any kind of marathon a dream. Which she does. But the career she loves and the endurance races that keep her adrenaline pumping have kept her too busy to put down any roots. Growing up in foster care, she’s never been able to establish traditions of her own, which may be why she’s fascinated by the rituals that generations-old family resorts are known for. She’s especially interested in the Bryant Mountain House, and not just for their secret recipe for the yummy, gooey, can’t-get-enough-of Hot Cross Buns….

Archie Bryant, the man with the Buns, is fifth generation and one-day-owner of the charming yet run-down Bryant Mountain House in Bailey Falls, New York. He’s determined to save his family’s legacy from the wrecking ball the old-fashioned way—by gritting his teeth and doing what needs to be done. There’s no way Archie will be influenced by the new hotel branding expert his father brought in to turn one hundred and fifty years of tradition on its head just to attract a faster, younger, slicker crowd. But when some of Clara’s ideas start bringing in new, paying customers, Archie can’t deny that she may have just given him a shot at keeping his resort open.

It’s sticky, it’s messy, it’s sweet, it’s Buns.

More good times from Alice Clayton! I love her books, but admit the previous book in this series didn’t quite do it for me, so I was a tad worried about Buns. Thankfully, there was no need to worry, because I had a great time with it!

We knew this was coming. First Roxie fell for Leo’s nuts, then Natalie swooned for Oscar’s cream. Now Clara is all over Archie’s buns.

It’s a lot of fun with these two, especially when they butt heads. Archie can be pretty uptight when it comes to his family resort, and has a hard time with Clara coming in and making drastic changes. Just give her a damn TV, Archie! 😀 I love the antagonistic dynamic they have, even when they are getting along and like each other. And the sexual tension is on point!

The banter and humor is entertaining and what I’ve come to love about Clayton’s books. They play off each other really well. And of course, it’s especially amusing when the whole gang is together. I really like seeing more of the friends interacting and all their craziness. I’m looking at you, Natalie!

I love the setting so much! The Bryant Mountain House gives of Dirty Dancing vibes. Don’t tell Archie I said that! It’s true, though, I would so stay there. Luckily, Alice added a note to the beginning of the book talking about the real place that inspired this fictional one. I need to go!

So, yeah, Buns is definitely an amusing book that will leave you with a smile. The books technically don’t have to be read in order, but it’s always better if you do.

“Is this where you keep the guests who couldn’t pay?” I whispered, peeking under his shoulder.

“They check in, but they never check out,” he replied, in his best Vincent Price voice.

“For the record, that’s creepy as fuck.”

My eyes boggled. “A file. You’ve got a file on me. Wow.”

“Wow as in, dude, that’s weird.”

Now his eyes boggled. “Dude? Did you just call me dude?”

“Dude, I also called you weird. How did you miss that part?”

These quotes are from the ARC, so they might be different in the final edition.

  1. Your descriptions for the books crack me up Christy. I have been hesitant about this series as people don’t seemed to be raving about this series compared to Wallbanger

I adore Wallbanger, but Nuts is really good too. It’s the best out of the 3 in the series, imo.

  2. Awesome review, as always, Christy. I love the sound of it. I can see myself enjoying it. I think I’ve read Clayton’s books before but I don’t remember which ones. I’ll check goodreads. Thanks for sharing. I saw this book on other bloggers. It’s been getting a lot of positive reviews so far. Your review makes me want to give it a try so badly. ???❤️

Yeah, the 2nd one didn’t sit well with me, but this redeemed the series. Nuts is still the best out of the 3, though.

  3. Hahahah! Your review has me howling. I can only imagine reading the books. I must say, though, that these books are probably the type that you read in the darkest corner of your bedroom. Or in the privacy of your dungeon. Maybe even in your pantry. Because, damn. Those titles make me cringe. Lol.

lol! The titles are silly, but have meaning to the story. This is why I love eCopies though. I have a guy friend who read Wallbanger out in busy public areas because he doesn’t GAF. He got some weird looks. 😀

  4. It’s great that this worked for you… I’m stuck at this though “Roxie fell for Leo’s nuts, then Natalie swooned for Oscar’s cream. Now Clara is all over Archie’s buns.”

I’m sitting here scratching my head with a big WTF expression on my face. Nuts, cream and buns? Euphamisms? I get the nuts and buns, iffy about the cream though…

    Happy Mother’s Day!
