Being alive is hard. Being human is harder. But since his recent recovery from death, R is making progress. He’s learning how to read, how to speak, maybe even how to love, and the city’s undead population is showing signs of life. R can almost imagine a future with Julie, this girl who restarted his heart—building a new world from the ashes of the old one.
And then helicopters appear on the horizon. Someone is coming to restore order. To silence all this noise. To return things to the way they were, the good old days of stability and control and the strong eating the weak. The plague is ancient and ambitious, and the Dead were never its only weapon.
How do you fight an enemy that’s in everyone? Can the world ever really change? With their home overrun by madmen, R, Julie, and their ragged group of refugees plunge into the otherworldly wastelands of America in search of answers. But there are some answers R doesn’t want to find. A past life, an old shadow, crawling up from the basement.
I think most people have heard of Warm Bodies by now, right? It’s a novel that was turned into a movie. It’s a nice spin on zombies regaining their humanity with a mixture of action, romance, and humor. I loved both formats, so I was excited when a sequel was announced. Whoa, I wasn’t expecting just how freaking good The Burning World would be! I don’t want to diminish how good Warm Bodies is, but TBW is almost a different beast. The writing, the plot, and even the characters are better.
Warm Bodies left us with a nice HEA feeling, but oh boy, it was only the beginning of something huge. We’re taken on a thrilling ride with Julie, R, and a few friends as they find themselves embroiled with a sinister organization. What they uncover is craaaaazy! All the while, R’s memories are beginning to surface, and they aren’t exactly welcome. Oh, but are they ever mind-blowing!
I remember loving the characters in WB, but it’s grown even more with this book. Julie still has a temper and is quick to react (which I love), but there’s something deeper to her now that made me empathize more with her. And I absolutely adore the friendship between Julie and Nora! M, too!
Seriously, the author does a superb job weaving this completely engrossing tale. I’m truly impressed! At first I was a little disappointed about not getting the full conclusion in this book, but understand that something of this magnitude can’t be condensed and rushed. I’m so damn eager to see how everything turns out!
I loved Warm Bodies. I didn’t read the book, but I watched the movie. I enjoyed it so much.
Wow, I just knew that there is a sequel. Awesome, Awesome review, as always! 😀
Oh, you remind me with this great review that I need to keep reading after Warm Bodies and read the prequel. I had a feeling there was more to the story with those little hints in book one.
oh it’s great to see you had another great time with the second book! I heard about Warm Body but haven’t tried it
So I should pick up Warm Bodies huh? I never did because ehh zombies, but I’ve heard it was a fun book. And if you loved the sequel so much, it might be time for me to give it a try! Glad this was a great book!
It isn’t like the regular zombie books. You should try it.
I haven’t read Warm Bodies but when a sequel is even better it totally pushes me to want to start the series. Glad this was awesome. Great review!!
You should read it, Grace. It isn’t like a regular ‘zombie book. I bet you’d like it.
I liked Warm Bodies but I didn’t love it so I was hesitant to pick this up. Darn, I should have! Glad this was an amazing sequel.
Joy mentioned that it has the vibe of The Passage by Justin Cornin, and I agree. It’s really good.
Ahhh! I totally forgot about the sequel! I haven’t read WB but I saw the movie. I’ve been wanting to read WB but always forget! >.< I definitely have to pick it up now if this book is even better. Lovely review!
I have never read WB. I watched the movie though. Now I am curious about this series. I want to try it. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a good zombie book.
You should read both. This is the type of zombie book that shouldn’t be considered a true zombie book, ya know? It’s more.
I”m aware of Warm Bodies, but I haven’t read the book or seen the movie. I really should give at least one of them a go. Glad that you really enjoyed this sequel.
I haven’t read Warm Bodies, since I am not normally into zombies. Still, The Burning World sounds like a good read.
You should, Nathan! It’s one of those zombie books that aren’t the normal zombie type books, ya know? It’s much more than that, especially this one.
didn’t Warm Bodies come out like forever ago? Wish I was on a zombie kick cause these sounds fantastic. But since I am not having much luck with anything else, maybe I should try it anyway
Yeah, quite a few years ago. Luckily the 3rd will be out this year too. You should totally give it a try, because this isn’t the typical zombie type story.
I have a copy of Warm Bodies but haven’t yet read it–and still haven’t seen the movie. I admit the premise was a bit off-putting to me and yet at the same time, I’m curious. You’ve got me even more curious with your thoughts on this sequel. It sounds like I should definitely get around to reading the first book and then read this one.
Gahhhhhh I have wanted to read Warm Bodies for like years now but have been trying to see if my library would get it. Your review of this one has just made me so much more eager though! I’m going to have to request they get it if I haven’t already and maybe just buy the book if they don’t. Great review!
Oh yay! I’m glad to hear it! I loved Warm Bodies (the movie was cute, but the book had so many social commentary moments- I just loved it). I can’t wait to read this one!
You know I have Warm Bodies in my tbr pile..looks like I need to get to it!!
Oh you definitely need to read these, especially the 2nd book.
I haven’t read this series yet, but another of my blogger buddies really loves it. I can’t wait to get to it. So glad to see you loved this one.
Great review. 🙂
I hope you do!
Thank you. 🙂
This is something else, isn’t it? I like the makeover from hell. LOL. So different from Warm Bodies!
It really is! I saw your review for it earlier where you mentioned The Passage – I totally agree!
I am going to have to read this series. I liked the movie of Warm Bodies but I really like the sound of this book. Great review!
You should read WB, because of course it’s different than the movie. Then read this! So good!
I absolutely loved Warm Bodies and read it a few years ago. Luckily I read it before seeing the movie, the film didn’t make me feel like the book did. I’m so excited to read this one Christy, we knew basically nothing about R in the original and I can’t wait to learn his backstory, it sounds a bit sinister. Brilliant review Christy, I’m super excited!
I am not the hugest fans of zombie anything, I’m afraid, but a romantic zombie book? I am curious! Great review (I do have to track down book 1 first though!)
I saw the movie with my daughter. Guess I’ll have to read the books since I liked the movie.
I adored Warm Bodies, and I’ve been dying to get to this one (pun). I’m happy to hear you enjoyed this so much. It sounds even better than the first, and you have me super excited to start it!!!
I’ve not heard of Warm Bodies as zombies just escape me. Maybe I need to check this out.
This looks so interesting and I have not even HEARD of Warm Bodies but now I’ll be checking it out. 🙂 This sounds like a totally unique take on good ole zombie- ism lol.
I always thought that Warm Bodies was something that I wouldn’t enjoy but I’m am intrigued now. I never knew that zombie was my thing until Anita Blake, Resident Evil, and The Walking Dead so hopefully I’ll give this series a try and see if I could broaden my horizons.
I’ve only seen the movie but now I have to put both books on the list . . . I had no idea there was a sequel!
I remember absolutely LOVING Warm Bodies when I read it, so I’m excited about this book of course! It definitely sounds like it gets crazier and all the more awesome. I can’t wait to revisit this world!
Wow, you are getting me all excited. I loved Warm Bodies so if this is better and different in all the right ways, I am in.
