Claire Connolly is a Sensitive, infected with magic when the Veil that divides humanity from the world beyond fell. Magic can easily consume and destroy a Sensitive, and if Claire’s secret is discovered she’ll be locked into the walled district of Devil’s Isle along with every other Paranormal left in the city.
Bounty hunter Liam Quinn discovered Claire’s secret, but refused to turn her in. Together they saved New Orleans from the resurgence of magic that nearly destroyed it. But now a dangerous cult is on the rise, and it will take both Claire and Liam—and magical allies within Devil’s Isle’s towering walls—to defeat the occult threat before magic corrupts them both...
I’ve been feeling urban fantasy lately, so I was eager to jump back into this world. I liked The Sight, but not as much as The Veil. Does that mean it’s not a good book? Absolutely not. It’s still a solid read that left me wanting more.
Gotta love a New Orleans setting, even if it’s a messed up version of the real thing. A new danger comes into play that threatens paranormals and humans alike, wreaking havoc all over the city. On top of dealing with the new threat and keeping the city safe, there’s a bit of a mystery surrounding Claire’s life that she’s trying to unravel.
Claire is a great heroine who continues to grow and become more confident while learning to gain control of her magic. She has sort of a quiet strength about her that I like, but can pull out the badass when necessary. I think we’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg, so I’m eager to see her progression.
Claire and Liam try to fight their attraction, but those pesky pheromones are strong! I like how well they work together and that Liam doesn’t get all overprotective with her. They make a really good team.
The secondary characters are a big part of why I enjoy this book. I love Claire’s little group of friends, especially Gavin. He’s charming, funny, and cocky (in an amusing way). I always enjoy scenes that involve him, no matter who he’s interacting with.
Overall, I enjoyed The Sight and look forward to the next book.
I have this series in my sight, I just don’t know when I’ll start. I have so many books to catch up on. Great review!
I have this one on audio and need to get to it soon. I hate when the second book isn’t as great as the first but I am glad it’s still a good one. 🙂
I confess that I prefered the first book, it was a bit more difficult for me with this one
I really want to read Urban Fantasy. I don’t know why I don’t but it always sounds like they are so good. Glad you enjoyed this one! Great review!
Second books are always a gamble b/c you know the first book was the stellar one they sold to the publisher. But she did her job if you’re still reading the series, yeah?? Its all in the world building 😉 I still need to buy this series but I don’t know if I have the time to start another one *sigh* Your review makes me want to, though!!!!!
This is a fun series and I like that it is a bit different from the norm.
I really enjoyed Gavin in the first book, so I’m glad we get more of him in this one. I hope he gets his own story at some point! Looking forward to reading this one Christy:)
I am loving the series and agree I love all the interaction between these characters. 🙂
I haven’t read CNeill yet and have considered starting here since it’s a newer series and therefore has fewer books. *ha* I’m glad this was a solid addition to this series even if it didn’t trip your trigger as well as the first. I love Nola for a setting – especially in urban fantasy. And I’m a sucker for a strong secondary cast, so it would seem this is a series I’d really enjoy. I just have to decide between this one and Chicagoland. Decisions, decisions… 😀
I need to find another urban fantasy series I think. All I ever seem to read is the Charley Davidson series which is still totally awesome and one of my all time favourites. I do love the sound of this one and I do find that the sequel never lives up to the first book in the series. Great review, Christy.
Great review! I liked The Veil a lot so I can’t wait to start this, hopefully this weekend. Definitely love this setting and Claire so can’t wait to get back into this world!
I have heard the first is better, but am glad the second one is good also. This is a series I am eager to try.
One of my reading goals for this year was to read more Urban Fantasy and I have failed spectacularly at that. This one sounds good, I’m adding it to my TBB list. Thanks for the review!
I kind of want her jacket 😉
I recently picked up The Veil on audio and I can’t wait to dig into it. I figured I should into this series while it’s still early so I’m not swimming up impossible creek like I was with the CV series (although I just gave up on that series).
I enjoyed this one as well but wasn’t floored by it. It was good though 😀 I want to read the next one for sure 🙂
Only book #2! There’s hope for me yet to catch up. Lol.
I know what you mean! The main characters have to pop off of the page in a book as well as the secondary characters for me in a book have to be an important part of a book because if not… WHY THE HECK AM I BOTHERING WITH IT THEN?? I love it when two characters that totally belong together are trying to fight their attraction.. it’s just like… GET TOGETHER ALREADY… PFFT.
Sorry you didn’t LOVE this one as much as the first, but it’s good you still founds things to enjoy and you’re excited for the third book. I really need to read something by this author in general!
I have not read much about her other series, but I’ve heard such good things about this one. I have a feeling I will have to try this one sooner than later. Even if you didn’t enjoy this one as much as the other one, you still enjoyed it enough to convince me! 🙂
Very cool. I’ve read a couple of this author’s books and liked them. Looking forward to reading this one now too.
Oh New Orleans! I have wanted to read a book based there and might add this one to my list to look out for. I just tried one and not even a gorgeous setting could’ve saved it 🙁
I completely agree with you. This one was good but I still liked the first one a bit more. The setting and the characters are amazing. I am so glad that you enjoyed this one. Great review!
I know what you mean! I was left wanting more and shaking my fist! That ending… Grrr!
I love the secondary characters too, I love that they are like family!
This is a to-read series for me. It’s taking me forever getting around to it. Happy the series is going pretty good. I forget, have you read her Chicagoland Vampires series?
I read the first Chicagoland book ears ago, but didn’t continue. YET! I’ve been slacking. Obviously.
