Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up. She graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.
Ryle is assertive, stubborn, and maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant and has a total soft spot for Lily; and the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head, but Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his no dating rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.
As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan, her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.
Sigh.
What a story. It Ends With Us isn’t necessarily my favorite book of Hoover’s, but it may be her most significant book to date and deals with a serious subject matter.
This is a story you need to go into without any preconceived notions. I so badly want to delve into details and discuss exactly why this was perfectly executed, but don’t want give too much away.
Seriously though, Lily is a character a great number of people can relate to on some level, including myself. Going on her journey through past and present isn’t easy at times, but it’s incredibly important. Lily shows us that you shouldn’t judge someone without walking in their shoes. Strength comes in many forms. It isn’t forged overnight, and everyone has their own path to go down in order to learn.
Hoover delivered what I crave from her books. It evoked an array of emotions that had me laughing, crying, cursing, and everything in between. My stomach dropped and my heart hurt on a number of occasions, but I enjoyed every bit of it.
So I think it’s obvious that I love It Ends With Us. It’s an insightful and powerful story that I hope will give some understanding and allow people to see things from a different perspective.
Also, the author’s note at the end of the book is a must read, but only after you’ve read the book. Just don’t skip it.
I thought this was very powerful as well Christy, I loved it and it might even be one of my favorites (Maybe Someday is still my all time favorite) of her’s so far that I’ve read. And yes, the author’s note is a must read. I think the story meant even more to me after having read that.
Maybe Someday is my favorite too. So much love for that book!
I’m so sad that this one didn’t work for me, but I had way too many issues mainly that [spoiler]
Anyways, I think I’m done with CoHo’s books. They just aren’t as poignant for me anymore.
I am glad that it struck you right in the feels though! Any time a book does that to its readers is a good sign! Great review as always, Christy!
Thanks for the comment, Nick. I totally understand and respect that.
I loved all the books I did read by her so I confess that I’m curious about this one too!
I really enjoyed this one too. I think it was a really important subject to get into and liked how she handled it. I loved Lily. BIG YES to the authors note. I cried more there than the actual book! Great review!
I plan to listen to this one. I will be sure and have truffles on hand. Great review!
This is on my summer reading list and now I’m even more excited to read it. Thanks for the great tease! LOL
I really enjoyed this. Through most of it, I didn’t feel anything towards the characters but as the story went on, I started to feel for them, had an emotional connection. And when I read the author’s note, that just made it even better.
I’m glad that book worked so well for you! I have never read a Colleen Hoover story and don’t plan to but it’s great that this author consistently delivers good stories.
Loved the review. I hadn’t heard about this story before now but it does sound interesting.
I haven’t yet read anything by this author, but your review has me curious. It’s like one big teaser! Now I want to know more. 🙂 I am glad you enjoyed this one.
I am curious about the author’s note now, lol
Oh, I heard this one might be her most emotional yet. I’m terrified, to be honest. I don’t know if I’m ready for this!
I literally just asked for this on Sunday night and got approved today (phew!) I had to know, had to judge it myself!!! I absolutely can’t wait b/c I know nothing and promptly stopped short on reading your entire review (sorry!). I really requested the book b/c I saw you read it and gave it 5 stars.
The book came with the biggest ass warning (actually just pleading) for the reviews to go out after the release date and not to spoil anything. It also came with a website to link to. No probs, anything for any author. I hope this goes well for her 🙂 Now I just need to finish a book to get to hers!!!! UGH!!!!!
I had this on my summer list, and I do still want to read it, but I am way too fragile right now, so I will put it on my list for down the road.
Well, I imagine you’re ready to bust just wanting to talk about this one with someone. 😉 Your review description of how this story needs to be treated and how it felt has me very eager to snag it and experience it for myself.
I’ve only read the Never Never series by CoHo, but I have a couple of her books on my ereader that I need to read. Everyone raves about her books and I feel so left behind. I’m glad this one is such a great book.
Would this be a good book of hers to start with Christy or no? I haven’t read anything by her (fail), but I’ve been wanting to forever, I just fear her punching me in the face with all the feels:) I really want to see how this one comes together though, and of course read the author’s note!
Lily does sound like a character I could relate to! I have only read one of her books, but want to read more
You know the way you wrote this review really made me even more curious. Even if it isn’t your fave, it still comes across as important and now I know I need to read her. I love it when even your less than fave books makes you feel that way. Usually ends up being a author I need to read. Yes, I still need to read her!
You have me curious about this book! I haven’t read Colleen Hoover in a while now so I’ll have to grab a copy.
A lovely review! Sharon – Obsession with Books
I’m glad that you enjoyed this one Christy! I’ve only read Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover but really enjoyed it. It Ends With Us has a lot of tropes that I really enjoy, especially the “no dating rule”. I’ll definitely grab a copy when I see it in stores.
I’ve heard the gist of this one and unfortunately I’ve decided that the storyline hits a little too close to home for me. I don’t know the storyline behind why, but it sounds like any type of trigger warning could reveal too much. I’m torn Christy. If you knew someone had been through something similar, would you recommend they read it? I’m not sure how emotional.it is. Brilliant review Christy, I’m so glad you enjoyed it <3
I don’t want to say too much here in comments, but I understand what you’re saying. Everyone responds to things differently. It hits extremely close to home for me, as well. That’s actually a big reason why I loved it. I just spoke with another reader who related to it too and loved it. I’m sure her review will be up soon. I often read and recommend books with difficult subject matters to people I know who has experienced them, myself included. It can be therapeutic when done well. But I get what you mean, perhaps this could have a general warning of ‘may contain content that might be disturbing to some people’.
You totally hit the nail on the head – I think this is her best book so far, even if it’s not my own personal favorite. I loved it and then I hated it and then I loved it. I’m used to an emotional roller coaster when it comes to her books, but I wasn’t anticipating anything like this. In the end, I loved it. I sobbed over the author’s note. What an intensely personal book. Excellent review! I have to write one for Friday and I’m struggling with how exactly to do, how to talk about how important this book is WITHOUT saying why. You did that perfectly.
Hmmm maybe one day I’ll try her out.
Hoover scares me, I think she’ll grab my heart and start squeezing it hard… and you know I don’t like that. Hahaha, I hate being human!
lol! That’s WHY I love her books, they actually make me feel
oh it sounds like this author really delivers!!! I do love a book that gives you the feels!!! Great review here.
The author’s note is what changed the story for me and helped me understand more and like it. Unfortunately, this is not my favorite CoHo book. I wish it was :/ I’m glad you loved it though!
Ahh Christy i’m with Nick on this one. it just didn’t work for me. I had so many issues with it but I think i am still going to try with CoHo books. Just because i’m holding out hope her earlier magic comes back.
I am super thrilled though that this one worked for you! It’s always exciting when you feel an emotional connection with a story!
That’s too bad. I’m actually the opposite. I much prefer her newer stuff. Slammed was just okay to me and I didn’t even want to continue with the rest of the books. I’ve been able to connect a LOT more with her more recent books. Maybe Someday is still my favorite, though.
It’s been a while since I’ve picked up one of her books. So glad you loved this one. 🙂
I’ve read only one Colleen Hoover book, Hopeless, but I really want to read more of them as I really enjoyed that one. The blurb doesn’t give much away for this one, but gauging from your review that’s a good one and it’s better to go in without knowing too much. It does sound like a great read!
Oh wow, this one seems hard to handle but I so want to read it. I love when a book delves deep.
I haven’t got this one as yet… I must fix that!
Glad you enjoyed it though, even though it’s not your favourite. I want to l know what you mean by powerful and insightful now! Grrr…
I’m really glad you liked this one!
Honestly my experience with Colleen Hoover’s books has not been a good one… Her stories just aren’t my style. :’) So I don’t see myself picking this one up! But I’m really very happy you enjoyed it. 😀
