Signed, sealed, delivered...
While spacing out in Chemistry class, Lily scribbles some of her favorite song lyrics onto her desk. The next day, she finds that someone has continued the lyrics on the desk, and added a message to her. Intrigue!
Soon, Lily and her anonymous pen pal are exchanging full-on letters -- sharing secrets, recommending bands, and opening up to each other. Lily realizes she's kind of falling for this letter writer. Only who is he? As Lily attempts to unravel the mystery, and juggle school, friends, crushes, and her crazy family, she discovers that matters of the heart can't always be spelled out...
So stinkin’ cute! I’ve adored all of Kasie West’s books and know that I’m going to have a fun time with them. They are some of the few YA contemporaries I can count on. While P.S. I Like You isn’t my favorite of West’s, it still totally delivered. It’s one of those quick, one-sitting reads that left me feeling light and happy.
Chemistry class bores the hell out of Lily, so she vandalizes a desk in protest. Okay, not really. She does write song lyrics from one of her favorite bands on the desk though, and that simple act snowballed into Lily gaining a secret pen pal.
I loved reading the little notes they wrote to each other, and how they bonded through them without knowing who the other person was. It’s fairly obvious to the reader who the other person is, but that doesn’t even matter. Watching it all unfold is what makes it so dang fun.
I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, and we wrote notes to each other all the time. We passed them before school, between class, and after school. I have numerous boxes packed away somewhere full of them. So not only did this book make me feel nostalgic, it reminded me that I need to find those boxes and burn them. Seriously, there’s probably some pretty bad stuff in them. And embarrassing. Possibly incriminating.
*ahem* Anyway …
As usual, West introduces us to some loveable characters. Lily has a whole indie artist vibe about her that I love. Her humor and awkwardness is adorable, and the things she’d say sometimes had me smiling and shaking my head. I also love that she has no qualms when it comes to dealing with assholes.
Lily has quite the entertaining family. They’re a bit chaotic and drive her crazy sometimes, but some of the sweetest and funniest moments came from her interactions with them.
There isn’t really any crazy drama, but Lily does have a rivalry with someone that I thoroughly enjoyed. Actually, she has a couple of rivalries, but one is definitely more fun than the other. And it was nice seeing Lily grow and learn from those situations.
Overall, I heart P.S. I Like You! It’s an all-around fun, quick read that’s perfect for summer.
Totally a perfet book for the summer!! Loved how cute this was and love Lily and her family. I so have shoe boxes of notes folded in some crazy little shapes stored away somewhere too!! Great review 🙂
Ya, so happy this delivered for you. I love that this author takes you to your happy place!
It’s perfect for summer, yes! And I have notes too! I have some of them in a small box in a drawer of my night stand. I may have to re-read them and find out what they say and burn a few haha
“It’s one of those quick, one-sitting reads that left me feeling light and happy.”
That’s exactly what I’m in the mood for Christy! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed everything I’ve read by Kasie West, and even if this one doesn’t end up as a favorite of hers, I know I’ll have fun reading it:)
Quick and light sounds good to me, but sorry to hear it wasn’t as good as her others
I’ve been anxious to read this one since all the great reviews started pouring in.
I adore her books too for those same reasons ad favorite or not, I will so be reading this too. 😉
Oh I love the sound of this one! I remember writing notes and there was this specific way to fold them so they stayed together which I couldn’t recreate now to save my life. This sounds like such a fun read! I’m glad that while her life isn’t perfect it doesn’t sound overly angsty either. Plus I’ve been wanting to try Kasie West’s books for awhile now.
*claps* Let’s all just read her stories and be happy, okay? I could be down with that… Great review! Now get to burning before the boy finds those boxes!!!
Probably not my type of book but thanks for the review.
The indie artist thing would pull me in too. I enjoyed some of Kasie’s books, and some of them didn’t impress me. I keep coming back to her, though, and I’ll definitely read this one as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Cute cover, if I were to read YA I’d want it more like this
At least the family is solid versus these crappy parents we normally see in this genre.
Sounds like a fun read! I still need to check out something by West. I used to pass notes all the time in high school; I have a box with a bunch of them still.
I’m not so into YA Contemps but this sounds adorable!
I like the sound of this one and it does sound perfect for the summer. I’m not big on YA contemp, but there are a few that I’ve read and loved and I think that this author needs to make my must read list!
I can’t wait to read this one. I tried to pick up a copy when it came out but my bookstore didn’t have any. Boo. I loved her work in the past so really excited to meet these characters!
Even if it’s not your fave by the author, it looks like a really nice and cute one there!
I’ve been looking for a good YA contemporary to read before summer is over, and I think I’m going to pick up this one. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Any of Kasie West’s books are perfect for summer.
I love that her parents are present in this book! Its so rare these days in YA. I’m pleased to hear that you enjoyed this overall.
A lovely review! Sharon – Obsession with Books
I thought this was so dang cute too! 😉 I knew who it would be early on too! But I loved watching it all unfold! Fab review girl!
(I remember the note passing days at school too! *Sigh*)
