When Edwin Barlow, the Earl of Blakeborough, agrees to help his best friend’s impetuous ward, Lady Clarissa Lindsey, in her time of need, he knows he’s in for trouble. He’s been hunting for someone to wed, and she’ll just get in the way. Although captivated by the witty, free-spirited beauty, he fears she’d be all wrong as a wife...if she would even take such a gruff cynic for her husband. Yet he wants nothing more than to have her for his own.
Clarissa has no intention of marrying anyone—not Edwin, whom she’s sure would be an overbearing husband, and certainly not the powerful French diplomat stalking her. But when matters escalate with the diplomat, she chooses Edwin’s gallant offer of a marriage between friends in hopes that it will deter her stalker. She expects nothing more than an amiable union, but their increasingly tempestuous kisses prove more than she bargained for. When her stalker’s vow to expose the lovers’ deepest secrets threatens to destroy their blossoming attraction, will their tenuous bond withstand public ruin, or will Edwin lose all that’s important to him to protect his bride?
I rarely read this genre, but that’s slowly changing. I’ve had great luck with the historical romances I have read lately, and it’s making me crave more. The Study of Seduction was my first Sabrina Jeffries book, but will not be my last.
This was a delightful read. Edwin and Clarissa have known each other for ages and always had this amusing antagonistic relationship. He’s all blunt and logical, with a reputation for not having much of a sense of humor. Then Clarissa is witty and flirty, who has no intention of marrying.
It’s always fun when two characters like this are forced to stick together because of extenuating circumstances. Even though they’ve know each other for so long, they discover that there’s actually a lot more to one another than what they assumed. I thoroughly enjoyed their banter and teasing, and how they got such joy from poking at each other. There were certainly plenty of smiles and laughing on my part.
Edwin is in charge of watching over Clarissa while her cousin is away, because Durand the dastardly diplomat is all up on her and doesn’t understand she doesn’t want him. Dude is a creepy stalker. There’s a whole plot surrounding this that I enjoyed, but won’t get into details. But there’s definitely more going on than originally thought. Dun dun duuuun!
So, yeah, The Study of Seduction was a lot of fun and has me looking forward to more.
I love a good historical romance from time to time. I’m glad you had a good time with a genre you don’t usually read
I like the dun duuun duuun 😉
I’m so happy you enjoyed your first Jeffries book, Christy! This whole series is a lot of fun, and the ladies are definitely stronger than they seem, too 🙂 Great review 🙂
I so need to read this genre. I am always saying it but then don’t. I did finally buy one so we will see. This one looks like one I might need to add too. Great review!
This book is good and you should read it, but read How the Scott Tied the Knot by Tessa Dare. Seriously! I’m tempted to force you to. lol. You will not regret it.
Oooo, I have this so I will NEED to get to this STAT!! I like the historicals that are FUN with great bantering relationships between the hero and heroine so I think this will do just fiiiiiinnnne….
I enjoy SJ, and actually have this in my pile. I am so happy to see you enjoying HF 🙂
Wohoo! I’m so glad you’re reading more historical romances! I know Eva loved this one so it’s been on my radar since. I love a good antagonistic romance! Plus with all that banter and teasing, I know I’m in for a ride!
You should check out some Lisa Kleypas next! She’s the queen of HR! 😀
I was sold at “antagonistic relationship” Christy! Those are my very favorite, so I need this on my Kindle immediately. Plus, it’s been way too long since I’ve read a historical romance so I’m especially excited to give this a try:)
I’ve heard so many nice things about this author’s books! I’m glad to hear you enjoyed this one. Sounds fun and charming!
This is a genre I rarely read as well, I just need to find the right books to interest me. Maybe I should try this one.
Great review! I thought this one was fun and I loved when Edwin and Clarissa were thrown together!!
Glad you enjoyed this one! Sounds really well done. I like trying out new genres sometimes; you just never know what will work.
Yay for trying a new author in a genre you don’t read a lot of and liking them. 😉
I’m in between reads, maybe histrom will work…
I love the opposites-attract characterization in this novel. I think I would enjoy watching Clarissa’s attempts to rile Edwin. 🙂
Exploring a new genre can be fun trying to figure out what authors you like and what style and settings. I haven’t read any of her books either. Two people at odds with each other because they have a long history and a creepy stalker sound just the thing. Da da dum. 🙂 Love it!
A serious guy and a flirty girl is my favorite combination! 🙂 especially if they are stuck with ewch other. Love to see the guy’s resolution crumbling to her charms 🙂 if you are craving historical romance lately check out the post in the comment luv. I think you’d like that book
I’ll check it out now.
Oh yea, I do like Jeffries. She is a good one in this genre. I don’t think I read much in this genre either until I started blogging. Come to think of it, I haven’t read a good one in a while. I might have to pick up this one and change that.
*sigh* Best Author! So glad you enjoyed your first, Christy! Her Hellions of Halstead Hall series…so much fun and has a couple 5 star reads for me in it and I’m stingy as all get out over those.
I haven’t read this author, nor have I read historical romance in many years — but you definitely make me want to! I’m adding it to the list 🙂
Ugh the creepy stalker situation with Durand sounds disturbing! Glad you enjoyed a book out of your usual genre, Christy!
I like the sound of this one, Christy. I go through phases with my reading. I used to read a ton of HR but only read them once in a while lately. I am kind of in the mood for one to be honest. I love books with great banter so this one really appeals to me. Great review!
I am trying to read more historical romances, but haven’t really found my way yet. I have some interesting ones for review, but haven’t been in the mood for them yet, so I hope that changes later this year.
This one sounds like a good one with how the characters have known each other for so long already. I also like the trope when they are forced together due to circumstances. And it’s a fun opportunity for the characters to get to know each other better. I might have to check this one out! great review!
I am so glad you liked this one so much. I love this author, and have for years. The chemistry between these two was so great. They definitely gave me the giggles multiple times. I would highly recommend trying out her other books too!!
Glad you enjoyed this!! This is probably one of my favourite hero from Jeffries’ book! I highly recommend checking out her other series, they’re super-de-duper!!
Awesome review, Christy!
Welcome to the non dark side!!!! So happy you are loving Hist-Rom so fast.
Sabrina Jeffries is one of my favourite historical romance author! I have yet to read this book but will definitely pick up this series. Would love to find out what happened after they are forced together and especially since this is a delightful read.
I’ve only read one Historical Romance so far but I hear they’re always like this and I will be reading a lot more! I’ll have to include this one as well!
This looks really good! I’m currently reading Wicked Intentions by Elizabeth Hoyt and I love a historical romance with 2 dynamic characters that are placed in close proximity to each other.
