Since the Others allied themselves with the cassandra sangue, the fragile yet powerful human blood prophets who were being exploited by their own kind, the delicate dynamic between humans and Others changed. Some, like Simon Wolfgard, wolf shifter and leader of the Lakeside Courtyard, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn, see the new, closer companionship as beneficial—both personally and practically.
But not everyone is convinced. A group of radical humans is seeking to usurp land through a series of violent attacks on the Others. What they don’t realize is that there are older and more dangerous forces than shifters and vampires protecting the land that belongs to the Others—and those forces are willing to do whatever is necessary to protect what is theirs…
Down with humans! #TeamOthers
*ahem*
Moving on.
What am I going to do? I was able to read the first four books in this series all within the past year, so it was all fairly close together. Now … now I have to feel the pain of waiting an entire year to read the final book. So depressing.
Marked in Flesh was outstanding! The progression of the characters and their world is masterfully done. Not just those in the Courtyard and Lakeside, but other places too. New bonds are being formed and various species are coming together. Even though there’s a shit storm brewing and a lot of vile things going on, it’s also forcing some to trust each other and work together. So it’s nice to see the good that’s coming out of all the ugliness.
This book is told from a lot of different perspectives, and I think the story really benefits from this. It provides necessary insight to all the pieces on the board, all the different moves being made. I liked getting a real feel of all the players and their parts in what was going on, how everything was connected and the impact they had. It definitely made me more emotionally involved in what happened to certain characters and the world as a whole.
There’s an abundance of amazing characters! I love them all, old and new. Lordy, are some of them terrifying. I know the Elders are Nimad’s claws and teeth, and they are rightfully feared, but it’s the Elementals that can really bring the destruction to humans and terra indigene alike. I mean, Ocean is one scary chick! Oh, but do I ever love her!
And of course there’s Meg and Simon. I adore them both immensely! Those two have definitely experienced the most growth and it’s delightful. I love that they can make me laugh and smile in the midst of all that’s going on around them. I get the biggest kick out of Simon’s reaction to the human female pack sometimes, how he has to remind himself not to run because he’s the dominate predator. When it comes to the whole dynamic between Meg and Simon, it is absolute perfection. I am truly impressed with the way it’s progressing. I’m dying to see what’s instore for them in the next and final(?) book.
Seriously, Marked in Flesh is a fantastic installment to The Others series. Hell, all the books have been amazing, but this one is definitely top tier.
Yes.. to. All. The Elementals are kick ass. They don’t scare me like the Elders I too loved they we moved beyond the courtyard and cannot wait for the next book.
The Elders a scary for sure. No way would I want to be on their shit list. But there is literally no escaping the Elementals. Land, water, air … how easily they can destroy. The terra indigene would be in a worse position if it hadn’t been for them. And that’s why I love them so much. lol.
Yes! #TeamOthers all the way! I can’t wait to read this one when it releases. It sounds like it was as fantastic as the previous one. I’m definitely in love with the Elementals! They are scary and so protective of Meg. And Simon’s reaction to the females always cracks me up!
I’m glad you liked it!
Great review!
I love that about the female pack and Simon too, it makes me laugh every time. I really do think they can terrify him!
I never thought I would love nor be able to handle a book with so many POVs before starting this series but some how Bishop makes it work and flow nicely like you said, it really is critical to the whole story line. I’m going to be so sad when this is over.
Oh I hope we are not to the final book next year. I love this series. I am starting the audiobook tomorrow!
I can’t wait to start this series!
Everyone is reading this one
I am the last one to read this series. I will! I promise! Such goodness! 😀
This series is everywhere right now. I guess I should take the hint already and pick it up!
I have only read book one, but I really like dit and already have the rest of the books in the series. Can’t wait to get to it!
I agree with you, this one was once again so awesome! I want more!
That is a depressing feeling to know you have a long wait on a good series. I guess that is the one bright bit about not having started these yet. I do have book one so I’ll probably end up bingeing after seeing how much people love this series. 😉
Yay for a cast of wonderful characters
TEAM OTHERS!!!! Most of the humans in this book make me ashamed to call myself one:( I can’t wait to dive into this Christy, binge reading the first three books a couple weeks ago was the best thing ever and now I’m officially obsessed. The year-long wait for the next book is definitely going to be painful. *sobs*
I adore this series too and I agree this installment is fantastic! So much great Meg and Simon time in this one, too! *squee* Totally down with humans and #TeamOthers!
oh I see I need to get this one read. I haven’t read this author, but been wanting to for a while. Great review…glad you loved it so much.
I know right? Thankfully, I haven’t read this one yet, so I still have something to look forward to. I’m waiting for my preorder to arrive! Gah. The wait is killing me now, but I’m sure it’ll be even more painful to wait for the next book.
Hahaha, that’s what you get for not waiting to read this series when it was finished. Welcome to the world we mortals live in. Where people wait for the shit they really really want! Bwahahahaha. (I’m a little crazy today). And I will click your damn box and thou shall pass!!!!!
I have got to read this series! It sounds amazing and I bought the first one over a year ago so I don’t even have any excuses. Great review!
Dammit! I’m gonna need to binge read these.
This series sounds really interesting! A looot of people have been enjoying it around the blogosphere, so I really must pick it up some time. 🙂
Omg, Simon and Meg’s relationship dynamic seems awesome! They sound like two characters I would love to read about. Awesome review!
What a difficult year it’s going to be for you… having to wait for the final book. Sounds like the multiple perspectives helps set this story up as well as it has. Fantastic review Christy!
I’ve only read the first book but OMG – I adore this series to pieces!! The “humans” that Bishop writes quite frankly suck ass!!! I seriously wonder if any of them will end up being sincerely good.
And since I’ve only read Written in Red, I think I love the Elementals and Tess the most – I hope Tess is still there – I loved how Winter was so taken with Meg and how she almost turned on Meg when she got the scarf! Memories…
BTW – Last book soon???
Crap.
I own the first book in this series and haven’t read it yet, by the time I get around to it book 5 will probably be released. It’s nice to be able to binge read a series in a row, although I also don’t want to wait till I am too far behind as else catching up can be tricky.
This series sounds so good and like each new books in the series keep staying good. I think it’s a series I will enjoy. Multiple perspectives and great characters are both things I love. Great review!
OMG I can’t wait to start book 1. Nothing like a masterfully built world! Great review!
Man I need to read this series, like ASAP. I seriously feel like I’m missing out. I don’t think I’ve heard a single bad thing about this series, not one single thing. Glad you’re enjoying this series. Sorry you have to wait forever and a day for the last book.
The world building sounds so good in this series! Based on everyone’s positive reviews, I know I would love this series as well. 🙂
Ooh, a love a series that gets better with each installment and the fact that book four isn’t full of filler is amazing! Most authors seem to struggle with content for a second book in a three book series. I have book one and need to crack it open ASAP and get through them in time for the finale. Awesome review Christy, loved it <3 <3
