Since the Others allied themselves with the cassandra sangue, the fragile yet powerful human blood prophets who were being exploited by their own kind, the delicate dynamic between humans and Others changed. Some, like Simon Wolfgard, wolf shifter and leader of the Lakeside Courtyard, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn, see the new, closer companionship as beneficial—both personally and practically.
But not everyone is convinced. A group of radical humans is seeking to usurp land through a series of violent attacks on the Others. What they don’t realize is that there are older and more dangerous forces than shifters and vampires protecting the land that belongs to the Others—and those forces are willing to do whatever is necessary to protect what is theirs…
Down with humans! #TeamOthers
What am I going to do? I was able to read the first four books in this series all within the past year, so it was all fairly close together. Now … now I have to feel the pain of waiting an entire year to read the final book. So depressing.
Marked in Flesh was outstanding! The progression of the characters and their world is masterfully done. Not just those in the Courtyard and Lakeside, but other places too. New bonds are being formed and various species are coming together. Even though there’s a shit storm brewing and a lot of vile things going on, it’s also forcing some to trust each other and work together. So it’s nice to see the good that’s coming out of all the ugliness.
This book is told from a lot of different perspectives, and I think the story really benefits from this. It provides necessary insight to all the pieces on the board, all the different moves being made. I liked getting a real feel of all the players and their parts in what was going on, how everything was connected and the impact they had. It definitely made me more emotionally involved in what happened to certain characters and the world as a whole.
There’s an abundance of amazing characters! I love them all, old and new. Lordy, are some of them terrifying. I know the Elders are Nimad’s claws and teeth, and they are rightfully feared, but it’s the Elementals that can really bring the destruction to humans and terra indigene alike. I mean, Ocean is one scary chick! Oh, but do I ever love her!
And of course there’s Meg and Simon. I adore them both immensely! Those two have definitely experienced the most growth and it’s delightful. I love that they can make me laugh and smile in the midst of all that’s going on around them. I get the biggest kick out of Simon’s reaction to the human female pack sometimes, how he has to remind himself not to run because he’s the dominate predator. When it comes to the whole dynamic between Meg and Simon, it is absolute perfection. I am truly impressed with the way it’s progressing. I’m dying to see what’s instore for them in the next and final(?) book.
Seriously, Marked in Flesh is a fantastic installment to The Others series. Hell, all the books have been amazing, but this one is definitely top tier.
