Erika
I was told that dreams were our heart's desires. My nightmares, however, became my obsession. His name is Michael Crist.
My boyfriend's older brother is like that scary movie that you peek through your hand to watch. He's handsome, strong, and completely terrifying. The star of his college's basketball team and now gone pro, he's more concerned with the dirt on his shoe than me.
But I noticed him.
I saw him. I heard him. The things that he did, and the deeds that he hid...For years, I bit my nails, unable to look away.
Now, I've graduated high school and moved on to college, but I haven't stopped watching Michael. He's bad, and the dirt I've seen isn't content to stay in my head anymore.
Because he's finally noticed me.
Michael
Her name is Erika Fane, but everyone calls her Rika.My brother's girlfriend grew up hanging around my house and is always at our dinner table. She looks down when I enter a room and stills when I am close. I can always feel the fear rolling off of her, and while I haven't had her body, I know that I have her mind. That's all I really want anyway.
Until my brother leaves for the military, and I find Rika alone at college.
In my city.
Unprotected.
The opportunity is too good to be true, as well as the timing. Because you see, three years ago she put a few of my high school friends in prison, and now they're out.
We've waited. We've been patient. And now every last one of her nightmares will come true.
I totally indulge in anything Penelope Douglas writes. I purposely held off reading Corrupt since its release because I wanted to save it for when I needed it. I seriously get major cravings for her books. It certainly delivered. Corrupt is a little different than her previous books, but still has everything I love about them. And then some!
This is a dark romance, and I love how it would make me feel slightly conflicted at times. I know to trust the journey to get the whole picture, though. And oh, what a journey it was. The edginess, revenge, mystery, the games … yeah, so freaking good.
I can’t even adequately express how much I love these complex characters and their different dynamics. Rika is the type of heroine I love and connect with. Love! Do not ever underestimate her. The guys make me want to smack them at times, but in the way that makes me want to grab them hard by the hair and kiss them too. I’d definitely be right there in their shenanigans.
Gah! The romance and the chemistry between Rika and Michael is delicious! It’s complex, just like the characters. I love the way they push and challenge each other. And oh, is it ever sexy!
So yeah, I love the hell out of Corrupt. It proved to me that I can continue to count on Penelope. This is a standalone, but there will be another book focusing on a different character that I can’t wait for.
After reading the book, there’s a great bonus scene on Penelope’s website you won’t want to miss.
it’s great to see you had such a great moment with the story and the romance.
I will grab the audio when it releases 🙂
I like her books but I haven’t read any dark romance novels! I’m so glad this was as addicting as her other reads for you! I might consider getting a copy! 🙂
Lovely review, Christy!
I really need to read more of her stuff. What I have read I have liked. I am into dark romances so this will get the add t the giant TBR pile. Great review!
I had my intro to her books in my January reading. She does pack a punch. I still have Misconduct on my shelf so that is the next one. I can definitely see why you savor these.
I need to check this out.
I can’t even remember which of her books I have on my Kindle, but I’m sure I’ll be reading one soon. Glad you enjoyed this!
I’ll have to make time for this one!
Oh dark romance with complex characters? Yes please! This sounds good.
Their romance sounds like one to swoon for!
The cover is boring 🙁
Dark romance definitely sounds intriguing! Glad you had this just when you needed it. I love authors like that, expect of course when you are craving one and nothing new it out. 😛
Sounds intriguing! That’s great you still really liked this one since it’s a bit different from the author’s usual. 🙂
I love that you kept this book for a day you needed it, Christy! I’m the same way, some authors just manage to draw out all my feelings, and make me such a happy reader.
I don’t think I’ve read Penelope Douglas yet, but that needs to be changed, I can never have enough ‘need’ authors on my shelves 😉
I hope your week is off to a good start.
I’m thinking I need to read something by Penelope Douglas Christy! I have little doubt I’ll be a fan. *runs away to buy Corrupt* Can’t wait to meet Rika and Michael:)
This was my first Penelope Douglas book, and I was left feeling pretty conflicted. There were some things I loved!! And some things I didn’t. I adored Kai. Is there more Kai? Is that next book going to be about KAI??
Yup, Kai! That bonus scene ends with leading into his book.
With a title like that, how could I resist? 🙂
I’ve only read one of PDouglas’ books but I loved it. And I purchased Corrupt already so I was excited to see you were reviewing it. I love heroines like Rika and I love a story that makes me a bit uncomfortable…watching characters toe the line (or cross it) of what I consider ethical/moral. You have me even more excited to read Corrupt, Christy! Great review. 🙂
I have never read Penelope Douglas! I should! I’m always in for complex characters
Dark and dirty with a plot? Well, I’m sold (color me easy today). Great review, girl!
oh I so need to read this. I love this author….I believe thanks to one of your reviews 😛 So I can’t wait to try this one out.
The blurb gives me a bit of the creeps and I didn’t even got the feel that this was a romance, but your review makes it sound like a great book. I can definitely see why it would make you feel slightly conflicted. I like the sound of the complex characters and dynamics. Great review!
I am glad you loved this one…. it means I need to get into it myself!
This sounds really good and you did a great review! I’ve added it to my TBR list. Thanks! Thanks also for visiting my blog! Happy reading!
I actually bought this one because I saw you got it on sale so I immediately made my way to Amazon and 1-clicked it. I’m so happy you enjoyed this one. Idk when I’ll read it but hopefully soon 🙂
I’ve read her Misconduct (Loved) and the first two books in her Bully series and really enjoyed them. This one sounds great but I’m a little worried, does it revolve around cheating? That’s one thing that will have me chucking a book across the room in no time.
Nope, no cheating. The blurb kind of gives that impression, but it isn’t at all. This is pretty different than her other books. It’s a darker romance that involves revenge and a bit of a mystery. Still has the PDoug magic. 😀
