Ellie Jordan’s job is to catch and remove unwanted ghosts. Part detective, part paranormal exterminator, Ellie operates out of Savannah, Georgia, the most haunted city in the United States.
When a family contacts her to deal with a disturbing presence in the old mansion they’ve recently purchased, Ellie first believes it to be a typical, by-the-book specter, a residual haunting by a restless spirit. Instead, she finds herself confronting an evil older and more powerful than she’d ever expected, rooted in the house’s long and sordid history of luxury, sin, and murder. The dangerous entity seems particularly interested in her clients’ ten-year-old daughter.
Soon her own life is in danger, and Ellie must find a way to exorcise the darkness of the house before it can kill her, her clients, or their frightened young child.
Well now, color me impressed.
I read The Haunted E-book by JL Bryan years ago and liked it. I don’t even know if that book is available anymore since I don’t see it on Amazon. Anyway, I’ve collected four other books by him over the years, but never got around to reading them. You guessed it, Ghost Trapper is one of them! I’ve heard over and over how good this series is, and finally, I got the urge to jump in.
I’m not sure why, but I had it in my head that this was more YA and would have angsty, annoying teenagers. Where the hell did I get an idea like that? That’s not even close to what Ghost Trapper is like. Ellie is an intelligent woman with a psychology degree, who stays calm in crazy situations. I was especially happy to see that she looked at things logically, and doesn’t consider parapsychology as scientific. She’s the kind of ghost hunter I can get behind. There’s actually a fantastic team of characters that I’m exciting to see more of.
Bryan did a great job bringing it all to life. It had that movie quality about it, so vivid and immersive. There were definitely some creepy moments that had me on the edge of my seat. Just the overall story was put together really well. I’m very much looking forward to the rest of this series.
P.S. This book is free.
Yay! I’m so glad you tried this and liked it. It really is good and I truly think the series gets better (and creepier) as it goes.
Ohh free? I like that
I know Heidi really likes this author and his books, so I’ve had him on my TBR for quite a bit now. I love that Ellie is intelligent and handled situations well. And movie quality writing? I’m intrigued!
Great review, Christy!
I’ll have to try the series, I love ghosts and I keep hearing amazing things about this one!
Ooohhhh this sounds really good. Glad you enjoyed it and I’m off to add it to the TBR.
Awesome heroine and free? Splendid.
LOL, I’ve done that with a few books- gotten the wrong idea and put them off only to like them when I do try them.
So glad you loved this one Christy! Jeff writes amazing characters I think. I haven’t read this series as Jeff is really good at scary things and I may be too much of a wimp for this world, but I love the sound of Ellie. Yay for logic!
Don’t you just love it when you pick up a book you’ve held onto forever and it ends up being such a surprisingly good read? (even if we do kick ourselves for waiting so long to read it) You have me very curious about Ghost Trapper, Christy, and since you so kindly pointed out it’s *free*, I’m off to one-click. And I’ll get to point the finger at you for this ‘purchase’. 😉
YAY for good surprises when you dust off a book that’s been hiding on your kindle for a while, Christy! I think I could get behind Ellie as well 🙂 You definitely tempted me big time!
Oh this sounds interesting. Like that it isn’t YA and she intelligent and calm. Plus who can turn up a freebie?? Great review!
I am glad you are finally trying this series. I know you will love it, and I bet your son will too. Jeff is a scary writer sometimes. This is an absolutely adult series all the way. It gets creepier and creepier as it goes. Don’t read it while traveling and sleeping in a strange house, I did that.
oh I love those great moments that bring you to the edge!!! Only makes for a more satisfying read.
I have this one but just haven’t found the time to dive into it. I am glad you enjoyed it and I really need to get into that one. I hope everyone picks it up, I’ve seen nothing but good reviews from bloggers for this one.
Good job Author for surprising Christy! It’s great when you’re caught off guard like that, I had to take a closer look at the cover art because it does look like YA/MG to me too at first glance. I think it’s the decieving ray of light
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of this author and their books before, but I can definitely learn to enjoy Ellie’s logical, even-keeled take on things. You know, instead of rash, one plus one equals twelve kind of characters? Lol.
I suppose the girl on the cover DOES look like she could be a teen. hah I’m glad this isn’t YA though either, because it sounds like it’s better for that. That’s great you got a chance to read this one finally and are excited to read the rest!
You had me at free…lol! This does sound really interesting and I love finding new authors. Great review!
I have a few books by him as well but have yet to read any! Glad to hear that this was so enjoyable!
OOOOO, you’re going back and reading books in your TBR!!! I’m so impressed and jealous! I need to do that!
I have a ton of Bryan’s books, too. And yep, still sitting unread. This series isn’t one of them, though. It sounds fantastic, though. I love the southern setting, too. Is it a quick read?? 220 pages doesn’t sound like a lot if it’s full of action 😀
It is a quick read, but very thorough. There’s action and intensity. It’s really good, just read it. It’s freeeeeeeeeee ……..
Ha! It’s so weird how we can get those off first impressions sometimes. Yay for finally reading it and it being so good! I don’t think I’d heard of his before.
This series is on my list of books to read..just pushed it up the list…you have me curious.
You had me at vivid and immersive. I love a well written ghost fiction and this honestly sounds fabulous, something I’d absolutely love too! It’s a shame about that cover though, I can imagine a lot of readers scroll right past it on Amazon and are missing out on a fabulous story. Thanks for sharing Christy and wonderful review <3
Yeah, it does give it a younger feel. I know a lot of blogger loved it, but just had no idea it was that good.
I don’t really care for the ghost story aspect of it but it does sound so well done. I think it might change my mind. Great review!
oh oh! here I go amazon. you had me a FREE. Serious free eBook hoarding problem here 🙂
Good to see this book was better than you thought it was going to be. Love it when an author you enjoy surprises you like that!
