With twelve hellhounds after her, pregnant Charley Davidson takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can’t get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. But after months of being cooped up there, Charley is ready to pop. Both metaphorically and literally since she is now roughly the size of a beached whale. Fortunately, a new case has captured her attention, one that involves a murder on the very grounds the team has taken shelter upon. A decades-old murder of the newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows is almost enough to pull her out of her doldrums.
Charley's been forbidden to step foot off the sacred grounds. While the angry hellhounds can’t traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders. They have the entire team on edge, especially Reyes. And if Charley didn’t know better, she would swear Reyes is getting sick. He grows hotter with every moment that passes, his heat scorching across her skin every time he’s near, but naturally he swears he’s fine.
While the team searches for clues on the Twelve, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they’ve accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. But the good feelings don’t last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life….
Oh, how I love this series to pieces! The multitude of amazing characters and abundance of humor definitely tops the list of reasons why, but there’s just so much more that makes the series great. All those factors are very much accounted for in Eighth Grave After Dark.
The setting is the same place throughout the entire book, which has the potential to make it feel a bit stagnant. However, there’s a lot that goes down! Even though Charley is stuck living on the property of an abandoned convent, there’s plenty to keep her busy. Charley can’t go out on investigations? Hell, they’ll come to her. And like usual, those threads are pulled into the bigger story so well.
Charley Davidson drives me crazy sometimes. In a good way. I swear, she always finds herself in some sort of predicament. It’s extremely entertaining, a bit of a Lucille Ball thing going on. Only more badass, and demons are involved.
I’m glad that all our other favorite characters were present and played an important role. I especially love when the guys are together … Reyes, Garrett, and Osh. Okay, more specifically Osh. Whew, I’m so glad Charley reacted the way she did to that thing he does, because she’s not the only one. Hot! There were some surprises, as well! I have been waiting through seven books to find out what’s up with Mr. Wong, and the time finally came. Oh, and is it ever good.
Eighth Grave After Dark is definitely a game changer. Jones has done a good job progressing the overall arc throughout the previous books, and it feels like it has led up to this. Like shit just got real. Now it’s evolving into something more, something bigger. While I’m excited and loving it, I’m also super anxious. I’m ready though, so bring it on!
Oh yes I also really enjoyed this one and you’ll see the next one is good but more like a transition.
Yes, LOL, Lucille Ball! Love your comparison. And yeah, Osh’s thing was pretty riveting. All the reveals in this book kept me feeling punch drunk. I ended the book with my mouth open. But that was fun to finally get the low-down on Mr. Wong. Can’t wait to get your thoughts on the next book, Christy!
I keep seeing this series! It sounds so good too. Everyone seems to love it. I have to check it out for sure. Great review!
I actually can’t wait to start this series. Luckily, my library has all the books so far, so I can binge read. Great review!
I only ever read the first 2 books in this series, but I enjoyed it so much so I definitely need to get back to it. Especially with everyone raving on and on about it. I feel like I would be fangirling with you guys do. 🙂
Charley was crazy in the first 2 books itself, it’s good to know she hasn’t changed one bit.
Fun review, Christy! 🙂
I really need to read this series. I have most of them ready to go on my kindle so hopefully it will happen soon. I am happy to hear that you really enjoyed this one. Great review!
I keep meaning to read this series. I’m a fan of character driven stories and enjoy a lot of humor too. Nothing like busting out laughing at a scene and looking around for someone to share it with:)
What the heck did I forget?! I can’t remember the thing Osh does! I need to reread, but I have the next book queued up from NetGalley. Maybe I can do a quick skim…
When he’s eating souls. 🙂
Woot! I’m so glad you enjoyed this one! I would like to give you credit for introducing me to this series. You’re the one who finally give these books a chance. It was love at first read! Tee hee. I can’t wait to see what you think of the next one!
It’s so interesting how this story ARC is progressing! Who knew the hellhounds….. ?!?!?!? And Reyes was…. Crazy!!! But the ending? Yeah, I bawled.. REALLY looking forward to your Ninth Grave review 😉
I freaking love this series. You are going to love book nine. I can’t wait for the next. Jones can’t write fast enough!
I love this one so much too! I’m debating on if I should do audio or just read 9th. I love this series so much on audio.
I so love this series. Charley and Cookie are great. Reyes isn’t half bad either. I agree that so much happens, even when it seems like it might not. I loved Ninth Grave too. Might be my favorite in the series.
Oooh it totally sounds like this series was all planned out from the start which makes it really exciting! Glad to hear you enjoyed it Christy, lovely review.
Love when I finally reach the book in an ongoing series where things come to a head, and this clearly was that book Christy! I’m still all the way back at book one, but I’m determined to get caught up on this series this year. I WILL DO IT DAMMIT!
I liked the ending of this one and the setting. I really liked Ninth Grave, I hope you do as well… cracking knuckles.
oh I definitely need to pick up this series, especially since I have heard so many fabulous things about it!!!
I’ve heard such great things about this series. I might just have to add it to my tbr. Great review!
For me, this installation had some up and down moments. Charley drove me nuts smtimes too, but not always in the good way, but overall I enjoyed it.
I recently (and finally) bought the first book in the series last month, I’m so eager to read it ! And find out about that Mr Wong I keep hearing about 😉
Seriously, has there ever been a bad book in this series? I need to try book one STAT.
