The end of the world didn’t happen overnight. After years of war, societal breakdown, freak storms, and rising tides, humanity already hovered near the edge. Then came the most unexpected threat of all: the world’s corpses rising up to deliver the final blow.
Born into this bleak and bloody landscape, twelve-year-old Julie struggles to hold on to hope as she and her parents drive across the wastelands of America on a nightmarish road trip in search of a new home.
Hungry, lost, and terrified, sixteen-year-old Nora finds herself her brother’s sole guardian after her parents abandon them in the not-quite-empty ruins of Seattle.
And in the darkness of a forest, a dead man opens his eyes. Who is he? What is he? With no clues beyond a red tie and the letter “R,” he must unravel the grim mystery of his existence—right after he learns how to think, how to walk, and how to satisfy the monster howling in his belly…
I read Warm Bodies a couple years ago and loved the quirky, yet touching zombie story, so I’m excited for The Living, the second book that will be released soon. In the meantime, The New Hunger had to tide me over. Apparently this is a new edition of The New Hunger that has more information that’s important for the next book. I can’t vouch for how accurate that is since I haven’t read The Living yet, but I will say it’s an interesting and enjoyable addition to the series.
This is basically a glimpses of Julie, Nora, and R years before Warm Bodies takes place. We see how paths are crossed and how certain things came to be. I found Nora and her brother’s story to be the most intriguing and was a lot more emotionally involved with them. I really liked seeing the different perspectives of that specific time though.
I have to say, the way certain situations played out, storyline wise, seemed a little off. Not a big deal, but I wondered how the hell so-and-so got to such-and-such place before someone else when it shouldn’t have been possible. Stuff like that.
There’s a prologue and epilogue that left me with total WTF feelings, so I’m extremely curious about where exactly Marion is going with the sequel. I have my theories, but it really does open it up to some fascinating possibilities.
So, I can’t say whether or not it’s a must read, but is interesting and has me excited for The Living.
It has been a while since I read something apocalyptic…
I haven’t read this series yet. I’m not much of a zombie fan, but I’m glad that this novella was enough to satisfy you until the second book is released.
I’m not huge on zombie reads but this was a nice little read. I do remember reading the first book and liking it and thinking the movie was okay too but it has been way too long since then!
I haven’t delved into this series yet, though I saw the movie. I better get on the stick!
i think i need to read more of books like this, I don’t think I have read enough of them
I enjoyed the movie, but hadn’t read the book. The WTF moments have me concerned. I will wait to see what you think of The Living before I pick them up.
I didn’t read Warm Bodies but I do like when there is something to tide you over to the next book. especially if it gets you more excited to read it!
I usually manage to suspend disbelief in books like this, I let myself get into the story, but it’s hard to when something catches your attention and things doesn’t seem to add up. So I can relate to your experience with this one
I started reading this last night, but I had to put it down. I’m a little confused, and plenty scared. That dread sitting heavily in my tummy does not make for good reading fun.
It’s been a while since I’ve read anything with zombies. This review makes me want to try out Warm Bodies, perhaps on audio.
Sounds like this would be a good one to pick up once The Living is already out Christy, that way those WTF feelings won’t last too long:) Can’t wait to see what you think of the next book Christy! I’m all curious now and am going to live vicariously through you:)
*hangs head* I own Warm Bodies but I have I read it? Nope. *eyes outrageous tbr pile and adds this to stack*
While I watched and LOVED Warm Bodies, I never felt thee urge to read it after seeing the movie. I’m about to join Audible as a member, though, and think I might pick the audiobook out. Super excited to here there is going to be a second novel, though!
Warm Bodies is funny, right? This doesn’t look funny… I’m so confused o.O
I absolutely LOVED Warm Bodies and have had this one for a while now, holding onto it until closer when book two is due to be released. Warm Bodies started me on my Zombie journey. This sounds like it had a different feel, a bit like what they’ve done with Fear The Walking Dead. I’m not sure what to expect from book two now, which I’m assuming might not be that fun, warmhearted book that fans are expecting. Awesome review Christy and glad you were still able to enjoy it <3
Well, I hope it all comes together in the last book, because it seems a lot of information was thrown together in this one that left you a bit confused! Fingers crossed it all works out.
I didn’t eve know there was a prequel to Warm Bodies. I loved Warm Bodies but this one doesn’t sound all that great.
It’s good, but I just don’t know how vital it’ll be for the 2nd book. We’ll see, I guess.
I’ve been thinking about reading Warm Bodies because I saw the movie (I know, bad reader) and I thought it was cute and I loved the 80’s soundtrack music. But I’m not sure, still on the fence. Maybe.
Hmmm…I haven’t read Warm Bodies though I did see the movie. (rare for me to do that) Sounds like the editing was off with things not lining up time wise….
I haven’t read The Living yet, but I got this one recently because I loved how quirky Warm Bodies was as well. Thanks for the review, Christy!
Oooo I did not know about The Living *rushes to Amazon* – will definitely need to read The New Hunger soon. Thanks for sharing!
