Seven years ago, the Veil that separates humanity from what lies beyond was torn apart, and New Orleans was engulfed in a supernatural war. Now, those with paranormal powers have been confined in a walled community that humans call the District. Those who live there call it Devil's Isle.
Claire Connolly is a good girl with a dangerous secret: she’s a Sensitive, a human endowed with magic that seeped through the Veil. Claire knows that revealing her skills would mean being confined to Devil’s Isle. Unfortunately, hiding her power has left her untrained and unfocused.
Liam Quinn knows from experience that magic makes monsters of the weak, and he has no time for a Sensitive with no control of her own strength. But when he sees Claire using her powers to save a human under attack—in full view of the French Quarter—Liam decides to bring her to Devil’s Isle and the teacher she needs, even though getting her out of his way isn’t the same as keeping her out of his head.
But when the Veil threatens to shatter completely, Claire and Liam must work together to stop it, or else New Orleans will burn…
The Veil isn’t the first book by Chloe Neill I’ve read, but it sort of feels like it is. It’s been years since I read Some Girls Bite, and it’s quite different than this one. I had a really good feeling about The Veil, and I’m happy to say my instincts were correct.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Veil and found it completely engaging. There are a few elements that are similar to other books I’ve read, but it still manages to feel unique and totally captivating.
I love the New Orleans setting, it’s actually a big reason I decided to read The Veil. This isn’t NOLA like we know it today, though. It’s now a former war zone from when Paranormals broke through the Veil from the Beyond, but it definitely still has the NOLA vibe.
Claire turned out to be a wonderful heroine. She tries hard to keep her abilities to herself, but when it comes down to it, she steps up when she’s needed. She’s pretty badass and brave without being in your face about it. Not to mention funny, especially when it comes to Liam and his brother.
Oh, Liam! This guy is a bounty hunter who catches wraiths. He has the type of cockiness that will having you grinning hard. At the same time, he’s steady and supportive.
I absolutely love-love the easy connection between Claire and Liam. Their conversations and banter were so smooth and felt natural, they constantly put a smile on my face.
There’s a strong set of secondary characters too. I adore Claire’s family formed of close friends! When it comes to Gavin though, he’s for sure my favorite. Oh man, between him and Liam, it gets very entertaining.
Overall, The Veil is an excellent start to a new urban fantasy series! I loved it and can’t wait to see what the author has is store for us next.
Yay! *does a happy dance*
I really loved this too and I loved Liam and Claire. I;m keeping my fingers crossed book two will have a little more, heat between them. 😉
That’s two votes for hunting down a B&N coupon or a cheap grocery store copy to buy! I was about to complain that the cover didn’t look like NOLA but then you said it’s a different, wrecked NOLA so I’ll give a pass on that ?
Yay! I’m so happy you enjoyed this one, Christy! I love Gavin too and have no doubt he’s going to be my favorite character too.
I really liked Claire as well and her connection with Liam. I can’t wait for more! 🙂
Great review, Christy! 🙂
YES! I loved Gavin too, and I’m definitely rooting for him to get his own HEA right alongside Claire and Liam (eventually, I can tell their romance is going to be a slow burn). So glad you loved this one Christy!!
I enjoyed this one too and met her Tuesday night. So far there are three books contracted but she is hoping for more. I loved the setting and look forward to the next book. It is called The Sight.
I can’t take it anymore! I’m getting this book. Your review was so fun and so many others feel the same way!
Good, don’t put it off any longer! 🙂
I hate admitting this but NO I haven’t read anything by this author before, but this title keeps popping up everywhere and I love everything you’re saying about this one so i’m definitely going to be adding to my tbr!
I may have to check this one out! I passed on a review copy but reading these reviews makes me want to pick it up!
So happy to hear you loved it. I was totally and utterly bored with this book. Sucks because I was on the official blog tour. I just posted an interview. My review is coming next week.
Wow, really? The only part I would consider boring is the very beginning with the history and information. That didn’t last long, though. Maybe the 2nd book with be better for you.
My co-blogger enjoyed this one as well! Liam sounds like a fun and entertaining character! I enjoy when the main characters have an easy connection and great banter! Wonderful Review Christy 🙂
I have just been seeing this pop up all over and it sounds really good! I love that its New Orleans and there is a great connection for the characters. Might just have to check it out – Great review!

I also love the sound of the relationship. Too many times you see tension but want some ease and good banter. Brilly review.
Have a great weekend!
That’s good to hear. It’s been ages since I’ve read her too and I’ve been curious. So many mixed reviews on this one.
It is good to see that you enjoyed this one. I have seen a lot of positive things, but have seen some mixed reviews as well. I will be reading this as planned. Thanks for the great review.
I want, I *need* to read this and I will soon ! I’m a huge fan of her Chicagoland vampires series and I’d love to read something a tad different 😉 I’m glad you oved it, I’m looking forward to get there, but I’m taking my sweet time appreciating the delay ^^
I can definitely see the connection between both of these characters! Liam sounds so sweet and hot and Claire, I love her subtlety. Lovely review Christy!
