Oakley Easton wants two things: to be a good mom to her daughter and to ditch her less than ideal night job. Hooking up with bad boy drummer Pike Ryland? Not on the agenda. She needs a promotion. Not sex, tattoos and rock ’n’ roll.
Pike isn’t about to let Ms. Prim and Proper shut him down so easily, especially when he stumbles upon Oakley’s sexy night job. She’s only playing a role on those late night calls with strangers, but when he gets her on the line, all bets are off. He won’t stop until that sultry voice is calling his name for real.
But as they move from anonymous fantasies in the dark to the flesh-on-hot-flesh reality of the bedroom, the risk of falling in love becomes all too high. And the safe, quiet world that Oakley’s worked so hard to create is about to be exposed to the one person who could ruin it all.
It seems like I’ve been waiting forever for Pike’s book! Okay, I’m exaggerating, but still. I needed to get Pike in my grabby paws. The wait for Call on Me was so, so worth it, though.
I have a confession to make … I’ve read the series out of order. I know, don’t throw tomatoes at me! Anyway, this is the type of series that easily allows that, even though characters overlap because of friendships and belonging to the same club. So, I started with Not Until You, which is where I first met Pike and wanted him for my very own.
Pike is even more than I could have hoped for. He’s a drummer in a pretty popular band, but this isn’t a “rock star romance” per se. Pike gets roped into working on a project with a bunch of kids for charity, which is where he meets Oakley. These two have amazing chemistry! Despite the undeniable sparks between them, she wants nothing to do with him. Ah, but Mr. Pike likes a challenge!
What I love so much about Oakley, she isn’t some wallflower and can really hold her own. Pike likes to tease her, but she doesn’t get all shy and blush. Thank goodness. She’ll tease and joke around right back, and it’s hilarious when she catches him off-guard. Also, there’s a lot of great dialogue that actually shows how well they play off each other. They are really a lot of fun together. Hell, Pike is fun with everyone – the guy made me laugh so much! Seriously, it’s ridiculous how much highlighting I did in this book because there are so many passages I wanted to save.
Speaking of dialogue … Pike is a dirty talker! And oh man, is he ever good at it. Oakley moonlights as a phone sex operator in order to make ends meet, but yowza, he’s the one that needs to get paid. I know I know, I’m all about Pike, but believe me, you’ll understand once you meet him.
I’ve talked about how incredibly simpatico Pike and Oakley are, but there’s so much more to the story than them scorching the sheets. Pike has an aversion to children because of his upbringing, while Oakley has a daughter, Reagan, who has high functioning autism. I love Reagan’s personality and relationship she and Pike developed. There’s a lot of depth to the characters and the story as a whole.
Call on Me is definitely my favorite installment of the Loving on the Edge series. Well, so far anyway, since I haven’t read them all. But Pike and Oakley are going to be extremely tough to beat. Have I said that I love this book yet? I LOVE THIS BOOK.
Pike sounds yummy and I love, how strong Oakley sounds. Glad to see these will work as standalone
*Gasp* You actually read this out of order, I’m seriously shocked at your behavior! 😛
So glad this was worth the wait and you got more Pike, he sounds yummy!
DIRTY TALKER?!?!?
I am in!!! (Does this make me sound shallow? Haha!)
No though, I love the sound of Pike. I like that these are characters that have a lot of depth. I haven’t read any books in this series, but that’s about to change.
Great review, Christy! You always entertain me with them! 😀
I could hug you for getting me onto this series Christy. *gives you massive virtual bear hugs* I love it so much! I’ve read out of order as well because I started with the threesome (win!) and then worked backwards and I enjoyed every minute of it. I will forever read everything Roni writes!
I’m so glad you gave the series a chance! Nothing Between Us … ah yes, that was a great one to be introduced to the series with. lol. I really want go back and read Jace’s book. I’ve already grown to love him and his man and woman just from all of their cameos in the books I’ve read. Loren definitely knows what she’s doing.
Who doesn’t like dirty talkers? I was under the impression that this Pike is a good, nice take-to-your-mother kind of guy. Am I wrong?
Pike is an absolutely wonderful guy. He has the bad boy rocker style, but he is a grown, mature man. That’s also what’s great about this series – these are all adults ranging from mid-twenties to late thirties. There’s none of that NA angsty crap. These are MEN and WOMEN.
Heh he did have a good mouth on him 😀 Yay for loving this one so much. I did too. I’m still stuck on Need You Tonight. Gah that one was some kinked out fun 😀
Sounds like a series I need to check out! Great review!
YEah reading books with dirty sex talkers… no wonder you headed up here and stapled those sex toys all over town.
Oh, I think I need to meet Pike and experience his dirty talking!
Pike sounds hot! I love that you think he should be the one getting paid, even though Oakley is the telephone sex operator. He must have a gift! LOL I love that Oakley is no wallflower! This is such a great series. I’ve read a few of the books, and out of order to, but want to go back and read them all.
Oh it has some depth to it? Hm… I might have to try this one out. Your review really has me wanting to read all of them. Yea, I think I need to read this author.
I so wanna read this one, it sounds amazing:3
Ok, I haven’t read it yet – but based on your review I’m very b happy I got it. Mayne this will be the book to change my opinion. And points for simpatico.
The issue regarding children is interesting. That must’ve required a LOT of love between the two to stay together despite the daughter who has autism at that. Must’ve been intense.
Well, it’s not like he hates them or anything. He just avoids them. It’s actually really sweet.
I can really see how passionate you are about this book Christy! Sounds like the characters have a lot of depth and chemistry and I’m glad Oakley actually teases him right back, that makes for some fun banter!
Pike sounds really hilarious. I’d love to meet him and witness his playful interactions with everyone. I love reading about someone like that – no unnecessary angst or drama, just pure fun.
mmmmm, love me a dirty talker. This sounds like a series I should try.
So glad to hear that the book lived up to your expectations. Pike sounds awesome!
Oakley sounds like my kind of girl! I love it when they are NOT pushovers! Gotta love a good dirty talker… Mmmm, I’d like Pike!
I really like the cover of that book. Maybe this makes me incredibly shallow, but I’ve read several books based just on the cover alone.
Awe man, I loved this series and completely forgot about it! I either need to start over, or figure out which book I stopped on. Pike and Oakley sound haaawt. I need to read this. 😀
