Atlanta is a city plagued by magical problems. Kate Daniels will fight to solve them—no matter the cost.
Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack’s shapeshifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there’s little available in Atlanta.
Kate can’t bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shapeshifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute—and they’ll pay him in medicine. With the young people’s survival and the Pack’s future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer—but they have little doubt that they’re heading straight into a trap…
It always feels good whenever I jump back into this world. I know I love the series and adore the characters, but it isn’t until I’m actually reading that I remember just how good it feels.
Six books in and it’s still going strong, baby! I wish I could listen to the audio of this series, but I just can’t. The narrator is amazing and this would easily be one of my favorites on audio. However, I need to read the books. Why, you ask? It’s because I highlight the hell out of that thing and re-read passages over and over.
In Magic Rises, part of the pack travels to Europe to acquire the medication that will help stop the kids from going loup. Unfortunately, they’re heading into territory where pretty much everyone would love to rip their throats out, and something just isn’t right about the whole situation. But they are willing to go through hell and high water to save their kids.
What a ride Magic Rises is! Loyalties are tested, sacrifices are made, and readers’ hearts will be broken. Andrews has crafted this brilliantly. There is no stagnation here! It’s kick-ass and exciting, while moving the overall plot forward.
Man, though … the characters are what really stand out. All of them. And I love that they all play such significant roles. It made me laugh when someone mentions Kate’s misfits, because it’s true. That’s the thing about Kate, she helps the underdogs, the outcasts, and the plain odd without expecting anything in return. Yet, she’s often rewarded with loyalty and a growing “Team Kate” with powerful players.
I love Currate (Curran + Kate) and all their alphaness. The only way I can enjoy an alpha male is when he’s with an alpha female and stands beside her instead of in front of her. There’s some shadiness that goes down, but I never doubted them. Not once. All I kept thinking is that a certain someone will eventually get their ass handed to them, and it wouldn’t be Kate.
Andrea and Raphael are also a favorite couple of mine and are right up there with Currate. But you know what duo trumps them all? Kate and Andrea. Two alpha women. Best friends. So much to love. They work together perfectly, and their banter and humor makes me absolutely giddy.
So I’m just going to say something … Hugh and Kate are a total turn on. Shut up and quit with the “wtf face” you’re making right now. They are! Holy crap, though, I’m anxious about what’s going to happen in the future, because we all know daddy dearest in coming.
Gah! I love this series so much. You’re a fool if you’re not reading it yet. I fool, I tell you!
Gah I still have to write my review for this but I agree, this series is just made of awesome!
WHY AM I NOT CAUGHT UP ON THIS SERIES YET CHRISTY?!!! I need more Currate in my life, they just make me happy. As do Kate and Andrea. And Kate and her misfits. And pretty much Kate and everyone. *sigh* SO GOOD!
AHHH! The more reviews I read for this series, the more I feel the need to ditch my reading schedule and just pick this up. I’ve added this to my summer binge-read series list and I can’t wait. I need to meet these characters and also this OTP!!
Lovely review!
I agree the characters make this series!
Everyone always raves about llona Andrews and this series and I feel pressured by the whole blogging community to drop everything and just READ ONE OF HER BOOKS. NOW. EVERY.TIME. It’s bad. Hopefully, one day, I have enough time in my schedule to fit in one of her books. I’d love to explore this world.
I just sarted listening to book four today. I am eager to get caught up. I know what you mean about needing to read it I struggle a bit trying to keep everything straight on audio, but since I started it on audio, I feel like I have to finish it on audio.
I agree, everyone who is not reading this series is fool. OMG, this one stressed me about. It’s scary being in enemy territory. I almost cried with this one though. I am okay with what happened but damn, it hurt while it was happening. I like how things happened in the end. This is why Kate’s kindness comes in handy.
Happy you are still loving this series. Next book, Daddy is coming!!!!
I’m trying to get my library to get the rest of these. I love them all on audio and I need more Currate! LOL Great name mash up…. although I have a feeling both of them would not agree. 😀
Yes!! I agree!I’m loving that you’re loving this series 🙂
I have a couple of friends who are enjoying this series, too — but I’m not a fool, I just have to read what I’m in the mood for ;P
*noms* I love this series but this is where I left off. I need to get back on that I know. That’s my big issue with audio and not being able to easily mark quotes and such. I do that something terrible in my other reads.
Kate and Andrea are the best “friendship” duo that I’ve ever read. Their loyalty to each other is just so inspiring and outstanding. I even like it so much better now than reading about Kate and Curran 😛
The banter, the action, the kick ass characters! This one sounds like it’s totally up my alley, I can’t believe I haven’t read this series yet. I aim to pick this series up some time soon! I just can’t wait to get to know what it’s all about. Lovely review Christy!
Apparently I am a big fool! LOL I need to add this series to my wishlist!
Aaaaahhhhhh I need to listen to this soon! I’m so excited. I skimmed your review but I think I still got slightly spoiled..I’m not sure… 😛 I agree, I love that both Kate and Curran are both great alphas and that’s the reason why they work!
I use to love Ilona Andrews books back in the day – I haven’t much of her recently though, this novel sounds promising enough. I like the sound of the alphas<3
This is my one of my top 3 urban fantasy/paranormal romance series together with the Fever and Guild Hunter series. I’m impatiently waiting for the next installment! Agree with everything you said and totally agree about Kate and Hugh!;)
Lolol!! Kate and Hugh ARE a total turn on. For 2 blissful minutes, I completely fell for the Andrews’ April Fool’s Day prank, and was so sad that there was no Hugh book in our futures when I realized it was the MEANEST TRICK EVER. Also, I completely agree and Kate and Andrea being the best couple. Still ridiculously happy that you’re loving my favorite series 😉
I didn’t see their April Fool’s prank. Aw man, I’d want a Hugh book. lol
