Luke Boone doesn't know exactly what his uncle Rust is involved in but he wants in on it-the cars, the money, the women. And it looks like he's finally getting his wish. When Rust hands him the managerial keys to the garage, they come with a second set-one that opens up the door to tons of cash and opportunity. Though it's not exactly legal, Luke's never been one to worry about that sort of thing. Especially when it puts him behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 and onto the radar of gorgeous socialite named Rain.

Clara Bertelli is at the top of her game-at only twenty-six years old, she's one of the most successful undercover officers in the Washington D.C. major crime unit, and she's just been handed a case that could catapult her career and expose one of the west coast's most notorious car theft rings. But, in order to do it, she'll need to go deep undercover as Rain Martines. Her target? The twenty-four-year old nephew of a key player who appears ready to follow in his uncle's footsteps.

As Clara drifts deeper into the luxurious lifestyle of Rain, and further into the arms of her very attractive and charming target, the lines between right and wrong start to blur, making her wonder if she'll be able to leave it all behind. Or if she'll even want to.

Okay, this is definitely my favorite K.A. Tucker book. Granted, I’ve only read three, but Becoming Rain tops the other two.

Clara is 26, and has been assigned an undercover gig that could either make or break her career. If she can bust the biggest car theft ring in U.S. history, then there’s a high probability her application to the F.B.I. will be accepted. Her target? Luke Boone. She’s supposed to get in close, get him to confide in her, and bam take everyone down.

I really liked Luke in Burying Water, so I was eager to get his story. He was obviously associated with people doing shady business, so I was kind of afraid for him. Luke really is a good guy, and I didn’t want him to end up as someone’s prison bitch.

Obviously things aren’t going to develop in a normal manner between these two. Clara is pursuing Luke with lies and deceit, but the more she gets to know him the more real she is with him. And he definitely isn’t the criminal mastermind she expected. It’s easy to understand Clara’s conflicting feelings, and the struggle between her heart and head. Despite the situation, she always stays smart, working things out and reading people.

These two really do have great chemistry. Their connection is completely believable and I just wanted them to be together! It was nerve-racking at times, though. Knowing what’s brewing on Luke’s side and not wanting him to get pulled in, while knowing what’s being set-up on Cara’s side to take him down. At the same time their feelings growing more intense for each other. The anticipation was fantastic and drove me crazy in a very good way! Plus, there are plenty of light-hearted and funny moments to balance all the intensity out.

“Come on, just one episode!”

“Why do you like this show so much? You don’t even get to see anything. They blur all the good stuff out!”

Luke’s brow spikes. “The good stuff?”

I roll my eyes. “You know what I mean.”

“I don’t.” His fingertip tugs at the V at my T-shirt, exposing the lace on my bra. ”Why don’t you show me.”

I smack his hand away with a smile and point at the screen.

“Fine … Maybe there’s a good movie on. One without aliens.”

This was actually a pretty interesting story, overall. Tucker did a great job mixing the romance and suspense without it feeling corny. Honestly, stories like this usually earn at least one or two eye-rolls from, but not Becoming Rain. She really pulled everything together extremely well. I mean, it’s not like a super mystery or anything, but all the pieces and motives were well played. Especially when it came to one certain character View Spoiler » who played a very significant roll. I’d love to get more of her.

So yeah, I’m very happy with Becoming Rain, and the ending was excellent! Now I’m looking forward to the next book, Chasing River!

  1. YESS! I loved this one too! I absolutely adored the story and the characters and I think this might be my favorite K.A Tucker book too. I was so nervous throughout the whole book, but the author made it work.
And yes, I have to agree with you. I hope the next book is Elmira’s. Or perhaps Warner’s. You know what? I wouldn’t mind both of them together!
    Great review, Christy!

  2. I feel like this book might give me an ulcer Christy! I always stress when I know a big secret one of the characters doesn’t, and Clara’s secret is enough to make me want to pop a Xanax. Okay, not really, but still I stress. Clearly everything works out though, so I’m definitely going to give this a try!

  3. I almost grabbed this and then just decided I didn’t have the time to read it. I am so glad it was a good story. I wasn’t too sure about Luke and how this would play out so I am glad it was a good addition to the series.

I have no idea why this is even labeled NA. It’s kind of annoying, because it’s not. Publishers seem to keep trying to push books into that category when they don’t even fit. So please don’t let the pesky NA label deter you.

  4. You seem to have enjoyed this one more than I did Christy, although I definitely did enjoy this one! I was interested in Luke since Burying Water so I absolutely loved getting to know him more in this companion book–plus, Clara was completely badass. LOVED her!

  5. Sigh… I haven’t picked up any of Tuckers books… and I have one right over there
Great review Christy. Glad you loved this one and it’s now your fav of her books. I’d like to see how these two get together, even though Clara is deceiving Luke.
