One Night. That's all it was supposed to be.
Reeling from the sudden loss of her sister, Haddie Montgomery has sworn off relationships. All she wanted from Beckett Daniels was a sexy distraction to help her escape her pain for just a little while....There weren’t supposed to be any strings attached—so why can’t she shake the memory of that unforgettable night from her thoughts? Or the taste of his kiss from her lips?
No matter how hard Haddie tries to forget about him, Becks relentlessly tries to prove that she should start living for today. But she is determined to avoid romantic commitment, and she can always use her ex-boyfriend’s reappearance to help snuff out the slow burn within her that Becks has sparked....
Or will fate force her to realize that this kind of connection doesn’t come along very often and a chance at love is worth the risk?
I know a lot of people love the Driven series, but I never got around to it. Until now. So technically Slow Burn is the 5th book in the series, but it’s more of a companion that can be read as a standalone. It features different characters than the first four books, so I felt completely comfortable about reading it without feeling like I missed out on important information.
So. Haddie and Becks are opposites. She nicknamed him Country, and he calls her City. He’s the All-American, easygoing good boy, and she’s a bit of a rebel who likes the bad boys. They’ve known each other for over a year through their best friends, but one night they give in to their very strong mutual attraction. Weddings will do that to you. Now everything has changed. Haddie is a no strings kind of woman, but she unwittingly gets tangled up with Beckett.
Haddie is still dealing with the death of her sister, who died only six months before. She refused to let Beckett get close and kept pushing him away. She’s torn between allowing herself to have this chance at love, but has her reasons not to. Haddie was kind of all over the place with what she wanted, and gave Becks some serious emotional whiplash. However, once you discover why Haddie is all mixed up, it’s perfectly understandable. It’s pretty freaking heart-wrenching at times, actually. To be honest, I’d probably be the same way if I were in her situation.
With that being said, I certainly wasn’t expecting where Slow Burn took me. Believe me, I’m not complaining. And while this is emotional, it’s also totally fun and sweet. Oh, and sexy. Grr, baby! I even found myself highlighting quite a bit, because there are a lot of witty passages and one-liners.
The chemistry between Haddie and Beck is fantastic. Beck may be a good boy type, but Had gets to see a whole other side to the guy. And oh, what a yummy side it is! It’s more than bumping uglies, though. Even though Maddie made Beck’s head spin, he handled her really well. Yeah, he’s definitely easygoing, but he’s also aggressive in just the right ways that Haddie needs.
I mean, really, the only thing that even remotely bothered me was how Slow Burn seemed to drag a little at times, because there was a lot of analyzing everything over and over in their heads. Ah, but it was still so good.
Slow Burn was my introduction to this author’s writing, and it’s safe to say that I’m looking forward to my next Bromberg experience.
Oh, I love the set up of this one! I’m glad you mentioned that this could work as a standalone, because I haven’t read this series either. Great review!
sometimes I love when a characters gets into their own heads, but sometimes it gets boring. This one sounds so emotional, but fun too. I like it.
I love what you have to say about this one. I love the sexy thoughtful mix so I’ll be keeping an eye out for this new to me series.
I have this one!! But I got sidetracked and didn’t get to it quite yet. But I was weary of it cuz I hadn’t read the series either. Glad to know you approve. You bumped it up my list.
Kind of shocked you read this out of order! 😛
Glad you liked this and it was a good introduction to the series and author’s writing style for you. It is nice when it works out like that. 😉
I think I would like this and now of course you have me curious as to what Haddie’s hang-up is. :snort: Plus I love all the feels this gave you.
Haddie sounds a touch frustrating, what with giving Becks emotional whiplash and all, but as long as I eventually understand the why of her behavior I’ll be good to go! Glad your first experience with this author was a positive one Christy:)
I haven’t read that author yet, but I’ve got Driven ! Your review made me move it up my list 😉
Oh my god, I’ve been wanting to read this since Anna at Herding Cats reviews it! It sounds laugh out loud funny and very sexy. Need. This. Book.
This one really doesn’t sound very unique by the description but I guess it’s all about the characters and their interaction and if that works… I’m glad you enjoyed!
Fun, sweet & sexy- my type of read! Thanks for sharing, I’ll check this series out! 🙂
This sounds like a really fun book. I often shy away from books that are high up in a series because I feel as if Ill never catch up. #5 isn’t bad & if its a standalone that even better.
Once I wanted to read a book & found out it was like #16 in the series. LOLZ.
Oooh… I love the ones with plenty of witty remarks. Shame it was a little slow in places, but it certainly sounds like one I’d enjoy!!
Ah yes to all of that. When I’d start getting frustrated with her I would sit back and be like yeah, yeah, actually that makes a lot of sense how she’s behaving. I was really surprised by them and really looking forward to checking out the rest of them now 🙂
Love the sound of this one Christy! I’m interested in finding out what these awesome one liners were since they were worthy of being highlighted! I’ll have to check this one out!
That’s great you found time for this one, and you were able to read the fifth book in the “series” with no trouble! Sounds like a fun and sexy book.
A companion that can be read as stand alone. I like books like that. It’s easier to pull it off in contemporary novels v. fantasy. The latter requires devoted following thanks to the world building and over arching arcs!
Ooh, I love a book with hilarious banters between the hero and heroine! Glad this book can be read as a standalone! Awesome review! 😀
