If seventeen-year-old Skylar Evans were a typical Creek View girl, her future would involve a double-wide trailer, a baby on her hip, and the graveyard shift at Taco Bell. But after graduation, the only thing standing between straightedge Skylar and art school are three minimum-wage months of summer. Skylar can taste the freedom—that is, until her mother loses her job and everything starts coming apart. Torn between her dreams and the people she loves, Skylar realizes everything she’s ever worked for is on the line.
Nineteen-year-old Josh Mitchell had a different ticket out of Creek View: the Marines. But after his leg is blown off in Afghanistan, he returns home, a shell of the cocksure boy he used to be. What brings Skylar and Josh together is working at the Paradise—a quirky motel off California’s dusty Highway 99. Despite their differences, their shared isolation turns into an unexpected friendship and soon, something deeper.
“ – a quirky motel off California’s dusty Highway 99.”
And there you have it. That was the deciding factor for me to read I’ll Meet You There. Thankfully, it paid to be shallow and impulsive.
Sky recently graduated high school and has plans to get out of her small town. She’ll attend art school in San Francisco when fall rolls around, but she plans to continue working a motel over the summer. When Josh returns from Afghanistan, they both embark on a journey of healing, love, and growth.
– Skyler and Josh were absolutely beautiful together; I love the evolution of their relationship so much. They’ve known each other for a long time, but it was this point in their lives where they really grew close. They started out as friends, opening up and confiding in each other, and then blossomed into more. It was difficult at times for them to navigate their relationship because of the things they were dealing with individually, but it was authentic and heartfelt.
– Josh’s amputation and PTSD was handled extremely well. I’m glad it was realistic, looking at the darker side of what our men and women who serve in the military go through. Josh’s chapters where short, but they pack quite a punch.
– It isn’t only Sky and Josh’s relationship I love. I also enjoyed the dynamics between Skyler and her best friends, Dylan and Chris. They were best friends since they were little, so it was interesting to see how they were all dealing with starting the next chapter in their lives.
– I jumped on this book because of the setting. I can’t resist books that are set not only in my state, but the same area I was born and raised. Creek View is a fictional town, but there are plenty around here just like it. It’s an area rich in agriculture, and when the blurb mentions “dusty”, believe me, it’s true. There are a couple of things from the book I could nitpick, but really, the author did a great job at painting the picture. And it was nice how Skyler’s view about her home changed throughout the book.
Really, this was a truly delightful book, and I for sure plan to read more of this author.
this book sound like a really enjoyable reads, I will add it to my TBR 🙂 Lovely Review
Ooh yay I’m glad that this one worked out to be enjoyable for you! I’ve heard so many excellent things for this one and I’m incredibly excited to start it.
Brilliant review, hun <33
So many people are loving this that I truly am kicking myself for not picking it up when I had the chance. Oh well, I guess I can always add it to the pile later on.
Glad you loved this!
I’ve read a few reviews of this book and I just love the sound of the friendship to romance, it definitely sounds so sweet. And poor Josh being amputated, it definitely gives us a different perspective. Great review!
Oh that’s really cool that the book was set around where you grew up! I loved this book so much. The PTSD elements were so well done and the romance was achingly beautiful. I need to order my hard copy asap! This author deserves all the love.
Lovely review, Christy!
LOL Yay for being shallow and impulsive! I’m seriously loving that cover.
I have this on my wishlist. I live in California also, so I like to read books set here (I’m in Riverside County). Looks good, thanks!
This book sounds so real. I think I’d love it for the most part!
I liked this one well enough. Great characters, good romance and all of that but it read like every other NA or contemp YA out there, I wanted something more original.
Despite the few issues, I am glad you enjoyed this and love that Josh’s amputation and PTSD were done realistically. Yeah this one has me curious
Oh, we all tend to be shallow and impulsive when it comes to books, lol! 🙂 This sounds like great recipe for an emotional read. I would probably jump right away on it if the characters were a bit older, lets say 20ies/mid-20ies. Great review, Christy, glad you enjoyed it.
Oh I’m so happy this one worked for you Christy! I absolutely loved it when I read it a few weeks ago and it’s definitely stuck with me. Josh’ chapters were short but like you said, they packed a punch. Lovely review 🙂
Coming of age books, if done right, can really be affecting. I like the sound of the setting.
You’ve caught my attention with this book. Sounds like a good read. Thanks Christy!
I never heard from this author before, sounds like a really fun read or listen..hehehe..I have to look.
Thanks Christy 🙂
Wow Christy! So glad you enjoyed this, even though you only grabbed it for the setting. Glad you thought Josh’s injury was done well throughout the book.
I do love when a book has something in common with me. I always wanted to try this one, but I can’t seem to pick it up. Don’t know why.
Sounds like a fun read with interesting characters. And yay for when an impulse buy pays off!
I also like reading books that take place close by me. It’s just neat being able to picture the places. 🙂
I loved this book so, so much. I loved the scenes with Josh as an amputee. I really loved the sex scene. They handled it so well, I thought.
