Lost and broken, Celaena Sardothien’s only thought is to avenge the savage death of her dearest friend: as the King of Adarlan’s Assassin, she is bound to serve this tyrant, but he will pay for what he did. Any hope Celaena has of destroying the king lies in answers to be found in Wendlyn. Sacrificing his future, Chaol, the Captain of the King’s Guard, has sent Celaena there to protect her, but her darkest demons lay in that same place. If she can overcome them, she will be Adarlan’s biggest threat – and his own toughest enemy.
While Celaena learns of her true destiny, and the eyes of Erilea are on Wendlyn, a brutal and beastly force is preparing to take to the skies. Will Celaena find the strength not only to win her own battles, but to fight a war that could pit her loyalties to her own people against those she has grown to love?
There might be minor spoilers, so read at your own risk if you haven’t read Heir of Fire.
I just want to talk about the book.
Alright … where do I even begin?
I was so ecstatic going into this, because I thought Celaena was going to go in blazing and get shit done. I was not expecting depressed Celaena. I wanted her to pull herself together and get on with it! I got it though, especially as we learned more details about her past. I understood where she was coming from and felt her despair. I think it was absolutely necessary for us to see just how far she fell, in order to appreciate her transformation into the strong queen she’s meant to be. Our girl had to go through the deepest, darkest part of her to truly find that fire – literally and figuratively. When she broke through … damn. It makes me emotional just thinking about it.
I can’t explain enough how much I love the friendships and strong bonds formed in this series. I mean, Rowan … wow. I can always tell when someone will be friend or foe by the way Celaene initially interacts with them, so I knew Rowen would be by her side, even though he didn’t say much at first. I just didn’t phantom how freaking deep their bond would go. What those two formed was absolutely breathtaking. I can’t wait to see what kind of force they’re going to be down the road.
It was killing me knowing what was unfolding with Chaol and Dorian while Celaene was gone. Everything that was discovered, all that transpired … gah! I don’t know what to think of Chaol right now, at least when it comes to being a love interest for Celaena. Honestly, the romance is far down on the list of things I care about.
And then there are the witches. Oh, how I love the witches! Manon and the rest of the Thirteen, especially Asterin, stole the show there for a while, in my opinion. What can I say, I have thing for deadly women. On top of that, the way Manon connected with her wyvern was so beautiful. I’m extremely anxious about what’s coming up with them though.
Manon mentioned the High Queen with wine-red hair and how they were going to kill her. So I guess that means Ansel made it home and took the throne back, eh? I’m so looking forward to seeing how she’ll play into everything, because she’s no chump. There’s definitely an abundance of strong women in this series.
There’s so much to Heir of Fire, so many powerful moments that had me stopping to catch my breath. I loved the first two books, but this took it all to a whole other level.
Heir of Fire was amazing, an absolutely fantastic installment to the series. Despite the questionable beginning, it wound up being my favorite of the three books so far. I only hope that they continue to get better.
Fantastic review! I loved it too! But I went with Crown of Midnight for one of fav. listens of 2014 b/c it blew my mind after the just OK start (for me..mostly the narrator) with Throne of Glass, but it was a very close call.
Great, great series!!
Great job 🙂
glad to see you enjoyed this book, I really need to pick this series and start reading it 🙂
Rowan and Manon stole the show for me. I feel like Celaene took a back seat. the first half really disappointed me, but then, holy cow, so much happens after that!!!!
I haven’t read it yet (but I will soon !), so I jumped to your conclusion and am glad that it’s fantastic 🙂
Ahhhh this book <333
I really loved Dorian in this, which is crazy because he kind of annoyed me in the previous books, but I felt like he really came into his own and just ROCKED in Heir of Fire. And his story was so heartbreaking I can't even.
Every character just seemed to be so much more explored in this!
I have the 1st book in the series, but with so many arcs on my shelf I still haven’t find the time to read it. Hopefully, I’ll be able to do it soon. My co-bloggers loved them, glad you enjoyed it too, Christy!
I put this one on hold after I had a rough time getting into it, mostly because the never ending number of POVs was killing the book a bit for me. But I’m going to get back to it for sure because I loved the 1st 2 books. I think I’m going to wait for the last one to come out so I can read them all together.
Great review, Christy! Glad you enjoyed this so much!
Everybody is always fangirling over this series and this author, I guess I need to see what’s all the fuss is about!
I still haven’readthis one. I had it scheduled in Sept but it got bumped. Now that I am ahead of schedule, I should sneak it in. I love this series and I am happy to hear this is the best in the bunch.
Okay, so Heir of Fire is still on my pile, I hope to read it soon! So I just skimmed your review. I’m glad you loved it!
I adore Calaena you know I do but Manon and Rowan are what made this story so great. I was surprised with how much I enjoyed the witches. I liked the darker edge to them it brought to the whole story.
I’ve been wanting to read this series since the first book came out. I love that you feel that they get better as it goes along. Sweet! So need to read these.
*Claps hands* I am so excited that you loved this one. I thought it was a great character building book for Celaena too… Witches were awesome and I love Rowan! Bring on the next one!
It’s great that you loved this one, Christy! I actually didn’t like the Manon excerpts at all, strangely. But hey, I was a total black sheep for this one.
Lovely review, Christy <33
I skimmed because I haven’t read any of these. I’m curious, but I don’t know if they would be the right book for me or not. I guess I need to check them out.
I totally love this series too! I know it’s a bit like GoT, or a super awesome “fanfic” but I don’t care, I’m addicted! I can’t wait for her new series too!
Yes – this is my absolute favorite in the series! I adore Rowan and Celaena’s friendship and Manon and her witches completely stole the show. OMG reading about her working with her wyvern event though she is an ice cold iron teeth was magical. LOVE THIS! Great review!!
Yayyy, glad to hear you finally read and loved Heir of Fire Christy! It took me a while to warm up to the book because it was a really slow start as you said with Celaena’s depression, but it was totally worth it because we got to see her relationship develop with Rowan. Can’t wait for the next one, and great review!
I totally agree with you. Christy! Heir of Fire was so unexpected, so different it felt like a total breakthrough for Maas. And I loved witches and Rowan as well. Brilliant review!
“So I guess that means Ansel made it home and took the thrown back, eh?”<—–YAAAASSS! So, I'm totally late to the party (AGAIN), but *shrugs* I made it 😉
I so glad you loved this too. I was getting tired of all the "too many new characters, not enough old characters, blah-friggin-blah." I loved this book. Yeah, I missed Dorian and Chaol (though by the end I was pretty well fed up with you-know-which-one), but Rowan . . . man . . . it was a long, hard road, but by the end, I loved him, and I'd been waiting to meet Manon for years (b/c SJM pinterest stalker). It was great. I can't wait for the next one. I can't wait for A Court of Thorns and Roses either. SJM gets ALL THE LOVE.
I’ve refrained from reading any of the negative so far. The addition of new characters and POVs is moving the story further, actually bringing the world together in depth. We get to see everything from different angles before the big crash. I love it. And I’m sure there will be more in the next book. Because I bet we’ll get some from Rowan so we will know how he’s bringing things along, and I suspect we might get some Ansel. I can’t wait!
Arg, yes I love a friendship – Rowan and Calaena’s relationship! Dorian and Choal were totally killing me, why can’t you guys just be best friends again ):
I didn’t mind Calaena’s bout of depression at the beginning, for some reason I think I related. I mean if I hit rock bottom, I’d probably want to mope around and drink wine on a roof top too for a bit, haha.
Great review, happy to hear you enjoyed it!
