I’m not that great with words to begin with, but Golden Son left me absolutely speechless. This book is so bloody brilliant! Pierce Brown blew me away with Red Rising, the first book in the trilogy. It really is one of the best books I’ve ever read. But get this, Golden Son was even better! I don’t know how Brown did it, but he did. Phenomenal doesn’t even begin to cover what this book is.
This picks up two years later, and doing this was such a good idea. Darrow is now twenty and finishing up with the Academy. Golden Son is so full of heart pounding excitement! I was often on the edge of my seat, truly immersed in this brutal and beautiful world the author has created. Love, trust, betrayal, war, perseverance … it has it all. Not only does it have it all, it’s executed perfectly! Utterly breathtaking.
These truly are some of the best characters I ever encountered. They are impeccable! The banter and wit is so sharp and smart. There is such depth to even the most minor of characters. There are so many to love and hate. Some broke my heart, while some made it soar. Darrow really is an exceptional main character, but I love my nasty “little” Sevro the most!
There is so much that happens in Golden Son, with twists and turns that had me reeling. My heart was obliterated! There were parts, especially towards the end, that had me so anxious and to the point where I had to stop because … it was … just wow. Not exactly eloquent, I know. But seriously, it left me breathless and head spinning. I can’t even bring myself to try and imagine what’s in store for the next book.
I’m not even joking when I say that this series puts many others to shame. Like I said, Red Rising is an outstanding book, but Golden Son took it to a whole other level. Truly a masterpiece. Morning Star, the final book, can’t get here soon enough.
I’m speechless too!!! Bring on the audio!! Awesome news!! I was a little nervous when I saw the title of your post on my mailbox…I should have know better…Silly me!
Oh man, you are going to love it!
I need to read these! I keep hearing such fantastic things, and your review just has me even MORE keen to check this trilogy out.
Whoa. New design?! Love it. 🙂
I really need to get started on this series. Everyone seems to be signing its praises, and by the looks of it, it’s all warranted.
Great review, Christy.
Thanks, Joy. 🙂
I hope you do. Red Rising and You … reeeead them!
Aw glad it rocked for you. I know yall were all antsy and excited for this one. Always wonderful when it lives up to expectations and pushes them a little further. 🙂
Wow, I have Red rising and you motivated me to move it up my list 😉
I got the first book in the series recently and I’m so excited to read it, because of so many positive reviews. Glad you loved it too, Christy!
I have book one and it’s a book I promised myself I would read it soon! I’m really excited to hear that this sequel is so good. Your excitement is contagious!
Great review! I can’t wait to experience the awesomeness that is Pierce Brown! 🙂
I want to force everyone to read this series! Pierce Brown rocks.
I felt everything you felt Christy and I think this book took me the longest to get through in a long time because I just was so overwhelmed sometimes I had to step back for a bit before I could continue. It was just freaking fabulous! I am already on edge about Morning Star!
I’ve not read Red Rising so I skimmed your review but just skimming it is enough for me to know that I’m missing out on not reading this series! I think I’ll probably get it on audio, I hope the narrator’s good!
I’ve heard some say the audio isn’t great, but the book was fantastic when they read it. But I’ve also heard some say the audio is good. So, I don’t know. I listened to the sample and thought it sounded pretty good, but it was only a small sample.
I think you pushed Red Rising really up my wishlist! Actually now I have both toward the top of that list! Yea, I’m going to get to these soon… 🙂
Wow Christy after reading your review of this one, it really has me excited about the book! It sounds completely exhilarating with all of the thrills and really does live up to the first book. Great review!
I skimmed your review since I just bought the first one from all the raves! I love that you say that this one is even better! I’ll try to catch up now. 🙂
I can’t wait for you to read it!
Everyone seems to be loving this series but I am hesitant to jump on it because the sci-fi part intimidates the shit out of me. Too much of it flies over my head, I will hold off until it becomes super huge and there’s no way for me to skip it anymore.
Don’t be intimidated by this, Braine. Trust me. It’s not THAT kind of sci-fi. I promise you will like it. If you don’t, you can smack me. lol. You need to read these. And don’t be dissuaded by the YA label. He’s 16 for a little bit in Red Rising, then 18 mostly. Then 20 in this book. But even at 16, he is considered a man. No teenage crap here.
Wow, the second book was better? How rare is that. Now I am super excited to read these books back to back.
I’ve heard so much praise for this novel already! I wasn’t a fan of Red Rising so I won’t be reading this but I’m glad that you loved this one and found it to be even better than RR!
Fab review, Christy! <33
You didn’t like RR? I … I don’t know how to handle this terrible news. I can’t imagine anyone not loving these books. You’ve wounded me, Melanie. lol!
Loving the new look! So pretty. 🙂 Not sure this book is for me,but it does sound really good. Maybe I can borrow a copy of the first book from the library so I can test the author out. 🙂
Thanks, Sarah. I need change. Often. 🙂 The first book is currently only $1.99.
I’ve seen so many amazing reviews today, I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy! I love when the second book outclasses the first! I hope Morning Star is even better. Lovely review!
Oh wow! It is so good to see an author that can continue to blow you away with each book! This sounds like an incredible series Christy. 😀
