Someone found him in a laundry basket at the Quick Wash, wrapped in a towel, a few hours old and close to death. They called him Baby Moses when they shared his story on the ten o’clock news – the little baby left in a basket at a dingy Laundromat, born to a crack addict and expected to have all sorts of problems. I imagined the crack baby, Moses, having a giant crack that ran down his body, like he’d been broken at birth. I knew that wasn’t what the term meant, but the image stuck in my mind. Maybe the fact that he was broken drew me to him from the start.
It all happened before I was born, and by the time I met Moses and my mom told me all about him, the story was old news and nobody wanted anything to do with him. People love babies, even sick babies. Even crack babies. But babies grow up to be kids, and kids grow up to be teenagers. Nobody wants a messed up teenager.
And Moses was messed up. Moses was a law unto himself. But he was also strange and exotic and beautiful. To be with him would change my life in ways I could never have imagined. Maybe I should have stayed away. Maybe I should have listened. My mother warned me. Even Moses warned me. But I didn’t stay away.
And so begins a story of pain and promise, of heartache and healing, of life and death. A story of before and after, of new beginnings and never-endings. But most of all...a love story.
Holy crap! This book came so out of left field for me. When I started The Law of Moses, I thought it was just another typical NA. Uh … no. I was not expecting what this book dished out.
This book is broke into two parts, a before and an after and spans about seven years. It starts out when Georgia is seventeen, and Moses moves in with his grandma next door. They’ve technically known each other since they were little, but things have changed. Now Georgia is pushing her way into his life and his heart, which he’s adamant can’t happen.
I know you’re probably thinking Moses is just another guy who has issues and blah blah blah – we’ve seen it a million times. Well, that’s not quite the case. He does have issues, but wow, I was completely blindsided by what’s going on with him. I’m not going to say what it is, because I think it’s kind of a spoiler, but it took the story in a totally different direction. The way it unfolded was beautifully heartbreaking.
Georgia … oh, this girl! She’s stubborn, funny, insightful, and best of all she’s a horse trainer. The author did an incredible job capturing the heart of a horsewoman. I saw so much of myself in her at that age, that there were times it would almost take my breath away. The way horses and training were used metaphorically between Georgia and Moses … absolutely perfect!
Moses and Georgia go through so much, and it goes deep. So, so very deep. It’s hard for me to even express how unbelievably touching it all is – the pain and the happiness. It seriously hits me right in this little heart of mine.
The Law of Moses isn’t only about the two of them. There is a mystery that is so artfully crafted and pulled off wonderfully. The author truly impressed me with how masterful she wove everything together. There’s even a little twist that was very clever and had me smiling, even with a heavy heart.
I’m not saying it lightly when I say that The Law of Moses gets a standing ovation from me. I will without a doubt read more of Amy Harmon in the near future. Bravo!
I’ve heard great things about Amy Harmon. Especially lately I seem to see her books everywhere. I grabbed a couple but haven’t had a chance to read them. Excited to try this one now! Lots of emotion but sounds like it still has a unique edge to it which is great because I do get tired of the same ole New Adult with the whole troubled past and blah blah.
Jennifer, you will love this. Promise!
