In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king's champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien.
The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass--and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.
Yes, I’m a late bloomer when it comes to reading this series. I wanted to read Throne of Glass when it first came out, but the fact that its fantasy always made me hesitate. I always said I would read it, but honestly, I don’t think I actually would have if I hadn’t been challenged to it. And you know what? I loved it!
Throne of Glass has great characters! I knew from what other people said that I would love Celaena. I just wasn’t expecting how much. She’s intelligent, tough, and has wicked sense of humor – yup, that’s what I like! I also like how she made rational decisions and didn’t go all drama llama over certain situations.
The different relationships she had with Chaol, Dorian, and Nehemia were wonderful! Oh, how I love the banter. I especially enjoyed the bond between Celaena and Nehemia, and how they were both such strong women. Girl power!
I was happy to see that the world building wasn’t overbearing, like I was afraid it would be. I tend to zone out when there is a lot of it, but there was absolutely no zoning out with this book!
I thoroughly enjoyed Throne of Glass and can’t wait to read the next book. For some reason I thought this was only a trilogy, so I was elated when I discovered there will be at least five books in the series.
Thanks, Ali, for giving me the push to read it!
YAY I’m so glad you finally read this book and loved it Christy! The characters are definitely amazingly awesome. Great review – will you be reading Crown of Midnight now?
I’ve got this one on my list. A couple of the bloggers I’ve read recently have seriously loved it. One day I’ll make it there. I used to love fantasy so fingers crossed 😀
Even if you’re a bit late to the party, I suppose late’s better than never right Christy? 🙂 I too really enjoyed this, and loved Celaena as well. She is such a strong heroine, and you can’t help but sympathize for her, you know? And I completely agree about the strong relationships. I loved how there wasn’t just a focus on the romance like most typical YA books, but how there was also a focus on friendship as well.
Looking forward to seeing what you think about the rest of the trilogy! 🙂 Thanks for sharing and, as always, BRILLIANT review! <3
I’m glad you enjoyed it Christy! I liked this one enough to continue the series, but following book blew me away…I loved them 🙂
I only recently read it too, so not the only one late to the party. 😉 So glad I finally read it though, so damn good. Can’t believe I waited this long, haha. Celaena is definitely an amazing character, you can’t help but love her, and she just gets better as she goes along, such a badass. I love this series so much now, haha.
You’re so late to the part Christy! Haha! But I’m thrilled to hear that you finally have this one a chance! This is perhaps one of my favourite series ever and I promise you book two only gets better and THE FEELS you’ll FEEL reading that book are unreal! LOL
This series only gets better my friend.
Woohoo! It is about time I picked a good one for you. 😉
Truly I am so thrilled you loved this because it is by far my favorite YA fantasy series. All the characters just kick butt.
YEAH CHRISTY!!!!!! I’m so glad you’re loving this series! While I struggled a touch with this first book, the second and third books, as well as the prequel novellas, all blew me away and I am now a complete and utter Celaena fangirl. Can’t wait to see what you think of Crown of Midnight!
I’m happy to see a non-Fantasy reader giving Throne of Glass some love, because I always hesitate in adding books in this genre to my TBR as well. Your comments on the world-building give me hope though, and strong characters certainly help too. I’m almost ready to remove this novel from my maybe pile, and add it to the yes one.
Welcome to this series’ fandom!
YAY! So glad you loved! I ADORE this series!
I am glad you took the plunge. I finally read the first two books back to back last fall and I have book three waiting for me. I think this is an awesome series and I love the new cover. The original cover was so lame and totally did not fit the character.
I love this series. I was a late bloomer, too. I started it in August and read through my ARC of Heir of Fire in under a week! That included the prequel novella book, as well. I couldn’t put these books down and it’s so far off for the next one. And then two more! OY! Glad you enjoyed it!
My feature co-host and one of our feature followers were nagging me relentlessly to read the ToG books, xs when Throne of Glass and Asssassin’s Blade went on ebook special, I bought them. My co-host is going to lend me the other two. The only problem is they are both arguing over whether I should read ToG first, or the prequel novella compilation first. Lol.
I am so happy you finally gave this series a go, Christy! Awesome, isn’t it? :))) It only gets better!
I’m really late as well. I have the 2 first books but I still need to get into them. I’ll! I know I need to!
I’m so thrilled to hear you enjoyed Throne of Glass! I love Celaena too, and Nehemia, Chaol and Dorian for that matter. I think this series just keeps getting better and better. Hope you enjoy Crown of Midnight!
I’ve heard this a great series, but a lot of fantasy books intimidate me, I’m really glad to know the world building isn’t overwhelming. That’s encouraging. Thank for the review!
Squee!! So glad you enjoyed the first book and I hope you are hooked like me. i just love this world and Celaena is such a great character. I love the guys too…. sigh. I hope you read the next one soon!
Yeah, I thought it was a trilogy too. I am happy there will be more books. I am so happy you loved this one as much as me. But I am a little scared for you as you read the next two books. So much happens, so much heartbreak. I can barely take it.
I loved this book! Just finished this week and will be putting up a review next week. I agree with the zoning aspect, I also stayed focused throughout the story 🙂
