Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren’t for magic…
One moment magic dominates, and cars stall and guns fail. The next, technology takes over and the defensive spells no longer protect your house from monsters. Here skyscrapers topple under onslaught of magic; werebears and werehyenas prowl through the ruined streets; and the Masters of the Dead, necromancers driven by their thirst of knowledge and wealth, pilot blood-crazed vampires with their minds.
In this world lives Kate Daniels. Kate likes her sword a little too much and has a hard time controlling her mouth. The magic in her blood makes her a target, and she spent most of her life hiding in plain sight. But when Kate’s guardian is murdered, she must choose to do nothing and remain safe or to pursue his preternatural killer. Hiding is easy, but the right choice is rarely easy…
All right! I get it now! Kate Daniels is pretty damn fantastic.
I’ve been looking for an urban fantasy series to fill the void of The Hollows by Kim Harrison since it has come to an end. I’ve been well aware of the immense love the Kate Daniels series gets, but I procrastinated. Then not too long ago, for one day only, all of the available books in the series were $1.99 on Amazon.
Total fate, right? Kate Daniels and I were meant to be.
I’m always willing to give the first, and sometimes the 2nd, book in an UF series the benefit of the doubt. There’s usually a lot of world-building and such that can get a bit boring or a lot to take in. I didn’t feel that way at all with Magic Bites. The authors did a great job at giving enough without overwhelming. There are still things I have questions about, but I have no doubt that I’ll learn more as I proceed through the series.
I absolutely love Kate! Big time. A badass with a smart mouth, yeah, that’s my kind of chick. The stuff she says and thinks had me laughing out loud. Often.
There’s a slew of characters to love and get attached to. So I imagine my heart will be broken at some point, but I’m sure it will be worth it. Curran, oh yeah, I see great things to come with him. 😉
Magic Bites was a great start the series! It was exciting and kept me on my toes.
I have one regret: I only bought the first three books in the series. I wish I would have snagged all six at that sale price, because I plan to catch up on the series before the next one is released. Only six more to go!
I liked how dark the world was. I listened to this and agree it was an easy read. I am looking forward to book two.
YAy! I’m so glad you enjoyed it and that you finally got to meet Kate and Curran 🙂
*FIST PUMP* I am so glad you loved this book!! Kate Daniels is my all time favourite heroine, and i just love the banter between Kate and Curran, hell Kate and everyone! She cracks me up! I need to get the last few books though… hopefully soon!
This is my favourite UF series by far. It only gets better from here!
You are in for a right treat, Christy! This is my absolute favorite UF series, and I’m so glad you enjoyed the first book 🙂 Lovely review!
This is my all time favorite UF series, so happy you liked the first book! And the series gets better as it goes on-the first book is a bit rough as far as writing goes. But the authors find their writing rhythm and the rest of the books are amazing 🙂
I love this series. It is one of my all-time favorites on audio. I’m really glad you enjoyed it too. It only gets better. 🙂
So glad you finally tried this series! To be honest I didn’t love love it until book three but I did really like it after two. It does just get better and better.
I read this one a few years ago and I just haven’t been able to fit the rest of the series into my schedule though I really really want to! lol
I enjoyed this one, too. Quite immensely, surprisingly enough. Considering it’s not a genre I like. I think I’ve fallen behind on this series, though. :/ I hope you’ll enjoy the rest, Christy.
WOO HOO!!!!!! So glad you’re now on the Kate Daniels train Christy! This first book is my least favorite of the series (still great though), so I can’t wait to see what you think of Kate and Curran as their relationship progresses. SO GOOD!
And yet another UF series I really want to try! I’m so glad you loved Kate Daniels. Hope you love the rest!
I’m doing this series on audio. So far I have liked it as well. I just finished this one not too long ago and agree that the characters are great!
I am hunting my next UF series down as well and I am planning on doing the audios of this starting in November. I can’t wait. Binge listening here I come.
Aw yay Christy!! I’m so glad you gave them a go! It’s one of my favorite series and really just gets better and better. <3 the Beast Lord 😀
I am encouraged! I plan to read this next after I’m updated on Elemental Assassin. I am fangirl ready, Christy!!!
Hells yeah bitches!!!! I knew you would love it. And it only gets better. I literally love each proceeding book more and more. And Curran’s role will start getting bigger, which only makes EVERYTHING better. Kate gets even more funny and snarky. So many new and old amazing characters that you will love, and yes, you will get your heart broken. I am so jealous you are on this journey. I wish I can unread and start all over.
Oh I just love this series and I’m glad you had a good time with this one. You’ll see, each book is better than the last one!
I don’t know why I had in mind she was a whiny heroin ? But if she’s a badass with a mouth, I’m in !
I was also impressed with how well done the world building is. Information is released in bits in pieces throughout the story, so it’s not only not overwhelming, but you’re still hooked with every book, because you’re always learning something new. Love this series. Thanks for sharing!
