Even though she’s escaped, twenty-two-year-old Evalyn Ibarra is anything but free. She’s desperate to return to a life that no longer exists, but prying reporters continually draw her back into nightmarish memories, using the tabloids to vilify her. Bad press is the last thing she needs during the trial of the year: the case that she and her fellow survivors staked against the Compass Room engineers. A case that could terminate the use of the inhumane system forever...
But in her dreams, she is still locked in that terrifying jail.
When she wakes, someone is trying to communicate with her in secret, through strange and intricate clues. As Evalyn follows their signs, she uncovers a conspiracy that goes so much deeper than her own ordeal. A dangerous intrigue that only she can bring to light. One that will force her to work with the one person she doesn’t want to see.
The person who owns her heart...
A few months ago I read and enjoyed The Wicked We Have Done, a cool horror/science fiction/thriller type of book. I was curious to see what the author had in store for us this time, and see how A Vault of Sins would play out.
I was conflicted when I finished the book. I didn’t dislike it or anything, but I didn’t love it either. There were certain aspects of the Compass Room that bothered me, so I needed to sort it out and discuss it with someone (Thanks, Liz & Kim). I got what was going on, but something just felt off about it. I did start to feel better about it after a while, though.
We discover more about the Compass Rooms and how they work, but we also discover that there’s a lot more going on than people could even imagine. Some seriously effed up stuff.
I absolutely love the connection between Evelyn and Valerie. When those two were together, that was probably my favorite part of the book. I can’t help it, I love a good friendship.
The romance with Evelyn and Casey continues with some ups and downs, but what I really liked is how she questioned the ability to find love so quickly while in the Compass Room. I think the answers were wonderful, especially the one Valerie gave.
The inclusion of the message board posts was a great touch. It let us get an idea of how the public felt and was responding, in a clever and creative way.
This book gave a lot more information, and in doing so it brought up more questions. Some were answered, but some were not. I thought this was a duology (with a novella), but with the ending of A Vault of Sins, it seems there will be another book. At least I hope so.
When it all comes down to it, I do like A Vault of Sins despite my initial conflict. Not as much as the first book, but still.

Too bad you didn’t quite like this as much as the first but yay for being able to discuss it with others. I find that always helps, especially when a book can be confusing or conflicting. I have a feeling that if I read it I would be harassing you about it. 😉
Shame you didn’t like it as much as the first (still sounds good though) even if it does give you some answers and leaves you with more (so yeah, better be a third book or I’m not reading the series, haha)
I hope for your sake that this proves to be not a duology, because having unanswered questions left over would be killer. At least you got some resolution, and the ending gave you hope that another installment might be in the works, or at the very least a novella to tie up loose ends.
I love, love, LOVE the covers for this series! They’re so creepily beautiful and the colors just make me want to reach out and grab them:) It’s a shame this installment didn’t work quite as well for you Christy, but I’m glad after talking it over with other book lovers (the best thing ever) you were able to come to terms with certain aspects. Lovely review!
I’m so glad you had friends to talk this one out with. That’s definitely helped me process my feelings more than a few times. And I’m glad you feel better about the story in general. I hope the next book comes soon!
First, I have to say that I love the way all the covers go together. They are pretty kick ass. Its a shame that this one left you wanting something more. I do know what you mean though. Sometimes it is worse when a second book leaves you conflicted after having really enjoyed the first book. I don\’t know if this is the series for me. Great Review!

I’m so glad you have people to talk about this book with, too. That Liz girl sounds awesome, but I don’t know about the Kim one.
Ha!! You know, I still have to get to OBS. I’m so lame.
But this book was good, just not AS good. Agreed.
I know what you mean! I love book discussions so much, and having friends or bloggers to share notes and insights with definitely gives the reading experience more dimension and character. In any case, I hope I get to have enough time and motivation to read and finish the first book soon. I have it but I can’t seem to muster any urge to start it >_<
Hmmm, sounds promising but I hate when the second isn’t stronger than the first. Also frustrating that you thought you were getting and ending and didn’t. Lame.
Love the cover arts. Maybe this book is a set-up of sorts? That is if there will be another one otherwise it’ll just suck because from the sound of it, you didn’t get full closure.
I really need to read the first one! I’m sorry this one wasn’t as great as the first, but hopefully there will be more to the story to answer some questions!
Thank goodness for bookish friends to talk things over with! This isn’t my type of read but have definitely been in that spot with others when I finished them.
I thought this was a series, hmm. We flipped opinions as I thought this was stronger than book one..LOL Hopefully we get answers and soon
I heard good things about book 1, in fact I added it to my TBR, I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy book 2 as much, but maybe in the next book a lot more get answered….If there’s a next book.
Thanks Christy 🙂
Urgh i’m sorry this one didn’t completely wow you Christy! It always sucks when a sequel isn’t as entertaining or memorable as the first book *sigh*
I really don’t like it when a book leaves me with a thousand questions at the end. It makes me very frustrated. :/
I’m not too sure if I want to start this series as of yet. I know people really enjoyed book 1. It’s a shame this wasn’t as good as the first for you.
Great review, Christy. I hope the last book will be better for you.
It is good to see you got some answers in this book as you were a bit conflicted after the first book. I hope the next book comes soon then!
I hope you get a third book ! That’s why I love the net, you always have someone to discuss things over with, and it opens up ideas and possibilities you never thought about before 🙂
