A year ago Hurricane Josephine swept through Savannah, Georgia, leaving behind nothing but death and destruction — and taking the life of Dovey's best friend, Carly. Since that night, Dovey has been in a medicated haze, numb to everything around her.
But recently she's started to believe she's seeing things that can't be real ... including Carly at their favorite cafe. Determined to learn the truth, Dovey stops taking her pills. And the world that opens up to her is unlike anything she could have imagined.
As Dovey slips deeper into the shadowy corners of Savannah — where the dark and horrifying secrets lurk — she learns that the storm that destroyed her city and stole her friend was much more than a force of nature. And now the sinister beings truly responsible are out to finish what they started.
Dovey's running out of time and torn between two paths. Will she trust her childhood friend Baker, who can't see the threatening darkness but promises to never give up on Dovey and Carly? Or will she plot with the sexy stranger, Isaac, who offers all the answers — for a price? Soon Dovey realizes that the danger closing in has little to do with Carly ... and everything to do with Dovey herself.
So. Servants of the Storm. Not exactly what I had expected. I was expecting a creepfest of a story, but that wasn’t really the case. And the ending. Grr.
Here’s the thing, I did like the book to an extent. It had that something that made me want to keep reading, but it didn’t elicit any real feelings. It didn’t get my blood pumping with anticipation or anything like that. It just … was.
The characters were good, but will be easily forgotten. I didn’t necessarily dislike any of them or anything; they just don’t stand out.
Now, the part that did get my blood pumping, but for the wrong reasons, was the ending. What. The. F@%k.
There are two ways to look at the ending:
- The reader is left with some serious questions. I can kind of see how it could be an open-ending, but there are still too many questions that makes it more frustrating than anything. And honestly, that takes away from most positive feelings I had up until that point.

Oh, wait, there is possibly a 3rd option. I read this thinking it was a standalone, and apparently it is at this point. Honestly, that fact played a big part in my decision to read this. As I read, I even kept thinking to myself that it better not be or turn into a series; I want one good book with closure. But once I experienced the ending, I was confused… is this a series or not? So I did some investigating, because I was so incredibly frustrated that I needed to put my mind at ease and know what was up.
What I discovered was there might possibly be a second book in the future with answers. Soooo, I guess we’re purposely left hanging without the knowledge that there might be a second book that would clear things up? I just … I can’t. I’m almost positive that if I had known going into it that this would be a series (that’s still not guaranteed), I would’ve been a lot more understanding and cool with it. Maybe not actually read the next book, but still be okay with the ending.
Listen, I am going to choose to go with option #2 and be done with it. This is just my ending and way of looking at it so that it’s a little more bearable to me.
I loved the descriptive writing and unsure narrator but like you didn’t fall for the characters. The ending yeah..hello?
Yeah, there was definitely SOMETHING good that made me want to keep reading.
I haven’t read this yet…but did you reveal a big spoiler in your #2? If so…I would have liked some type of warning before I read that. I just can’t start a book after I know how it is going to end. : (
It isn’t a spoiler. That’s just how I’M choosing to look at it instead of choosing to wait for answers that aren’t even promised with a second book. It’s MY ending for the book so that I can at least be somewhat okay with all the unanswered questions, because IF there is ever a second book, I don’t plan to read it. So no, that isn’t a spoiler. Just my way of making an irritating ending a little more bearable.
Oh okay…that makes sense now that you put it that way. Thanks for explaining what you meant. : )
I DNFed this around 25% into the book and I read the ending after DNFing because I was too bored to even care and that was basically my reaction. I was discussing this the ending with a friend and personally we both agree that if option 2 were true… then we both would have liked the book better but I think the fact that there is a sequel that may or may not happen indicates that that’s probably not the case which is a real pity.
Yeah, it just … -sigh- I don’t know.
I’m at 29% and I think you just made my decision for me to DNF this. I’m having a tough time staying with the dialogue and non-stop descriptions of virtually everything. It’s a case of “I’ve got so many other things to read”. I’m soooooo glad you put your review up b/c the ending would have probably had me go postal somewhere….
Oh great, I continue to be a bad influence. lol.
I think this story would drive me crazy Christy! I’m the type of reader that likes clear answers by the time I reach the end, I don’t like to be left wondering what’s going on or what happened, unless there’s definitively going to be a second book and I know answers might be forthcoming. The fact that there may or may not be a second book in this case only makes it worse. I think I’ll pass on this one!
Maybe if there is ever a 2nd book you could give it a try. Then hopefully it wouldn’t be so bad.
It’s so stupid, ( I didn’t check the spoiler because it isn’t working, don’t know if it’s just me or not) but books, whether intended to be a series or not, whether it’s possibly or not, should end solid on it’s own. Even if this was good, nope, that would just piss me off big time. 🙁
If you’re using an ipad or something like that, sometimes the spoiler doesn’t open. It just says that maybe she was just crazy and imagined everything.
Oh no, to have a book that elicits no strong feelings is not good. I think I like your ending. Thanks for the review, Christy!
lol – My ending makes me like the book more. 😀
An open ending? Yeah, no thank you. I need answers! I thought before this might be too scary for me but it sounds like maybe it isn’t. I don’t know, I think I’ll skip it anyway.
Eh, I don’t know about scary. I know you have a low tolerance for that kind of thing though, so maybe it’s good you skipped it.
Yeah this one was interesting to say the least and disappointing all at the same time.
-sigh- Yeah.
DUDE! I hate books like this and movies too. Open endings where you are left wondering if its all just a big mind f@#$ drive me nuts. I have yet to read a positive review for this one and everyone was so excited for it because of the creepy cover. Glad I dodged this bullet.
I know for a fact that you would’ve been pissed with this book.
If there isn’t a set sequel in place, I’d like an ending that felt a bit more final. I’m sorry this didn’t really work for you…I’m not sure how i’d feel about it.
Nope. Don’t think this one is for me. I need a good solid ending or at least knowledge that it will go on and hopefully clarify things. I am an ending girl. I would probably feel the same way you did with the spoiler (yep, I read it LOL).
The premise sounds like something that will hook you because of the mystery, too bad it failed to do so. I can understand that feeling of enjoying certain aspects in the book but it didn’t really engage you as you would like and in the end the book just leaves you with so-so feelings. And I can understand why you would go to the 2nd ending option, I really think it’s better to tell the reader if the book will have a sequel, especially for books like this. It will definitely help in making readers more understanding of the frustrating aspects in the book. Awesome review Christy!
All of my blogging peeps seem to be either DNF’ing this one, or giving it like 2 stars, so I’m going to take the hint and steer clear. An ending should never make you go WTF IMO. Happy Friday, Christy!
Frustrating endings that don’t end well are annoying and agggh. Being left hanging with lots of questions is not something that’s fun, and I bet if you knew that beforehand you wouldn’t have picked it up or so. I hope your next read is better Christy.
Wow so many mixed reviews for this one. I loved her Steampunk series now I’m not sure if I should be relieved/sad that I missed this one. Sorry it got you all discombobulated like this and not in a good way.
Boo!!! Man, this sounds so bad now. I wanted to read this one because I read somewhere the mystery can be pretty compelling, but this review is scaring me away. Uhh, no thanks 🙁 huhu
Oh no. That ending would have had me wanting to bite someone. Hard. I have one of her others on my tbr pile. I’ll stick to that one 🙂
With that cover I totally expected a creepy story too, but nothing about this book sounds that great. Still, that cover is SLAMMING!
GAH, Christy. This sounds like a HEP big mess of . . . MEH. I’m sorry it held you captive only to make you growl at the ending (LOL . . . I’m not laughing AT you, I’m laughing WITH you). But thanks for sharing and great review 😉 I’m going to try to steer clear of this one . . .
Awww I was going to read this since I love her other series. Will put it off now though :/ Hope your next read is more to your liking 🙂
Hmm this one sounds like a head scratcher. I think it would really frustrate me to be so uncertain about the ending, especially thinking it was a standalone originally and then maybe wondering about a sequel explaining things. I love the cover for this one, but I’m not sure I’d want to pick this up, it sounds like a bit of a mind-eff. Thanks for your thoughtful review!
awe. I really love her audult pnr series and i hope i enjoy it too
sad it was not was you expected
*hugs*
