Olivia Kaspen has just discovered that her ex-boyfriend, Caleb Drake, has lost his memory. With an already lousy reputation for taking advantage of situations, Olivia must decide how far she is willing to go to get Caleb back. Wrestling to keep her true identity and their sordid past under wraps, Olivia’s greatest obstacle is Caleb’s wicked, new girlfriend; Leah Smith. It is a race to the finish as these two vipers engage in a vicious tug of war to possess a man who no longer remembers them. But, soon enough Olivia must face the consequences of her lies, and in the process discover that sometimes love falls short of redemption.
Thoughts immediately after reading:
Goddammit, Tarryn Fisher! Wtf did you do to me? My chest hurts so effing bad. I can’t remember the last time I cried that hard. I’m still trying to catch my breath.
An hour later:
The Opportunist has been around since 2011. So why the hell was it not on my radar sooner? I feel like those of you I know, who have read it, let me down. This is a book you should have forced me to read!
–sigh– I forgive you. Just don’t let it happen again.
Seriously, Tarryn blew me away! This woman is a bloody evil, but in the best way possible.
I had such physical reactions while reading this. I literally felt my heart in my chest doing weird things. This story is gut-wrenching and emotionally exhausting. And you know what, it’s a goddam glorious feeling! This is the kind of story you absorb; it becomes part of you, forever imprinted on your heart.
This is not always a rainbows and unicorns type of love story. But it’s absolutely beautiful in a messed up, raw, and real way. You’ll get your heart ripped out over and over and love every second of it.
I loved the characters so much, even when they made me rage. I’d want to simultaneously slap and hug them. As silly as it sounds because these are fiction characters, they’re human. They aren’t perfect, and they definitely make mistakes. It’s life.
I found myself in Olivia quite a bit actually; her journey was a very familiar one. I can’t help but to read the epilogue over and over, both loving and hating it.
Yes, I’m purposely being vague on details of the story. Listen, just read The Opportunist! I don’t want to fail those who haven’t read it yet, so do as I say and thank me later.
Hmm, this wasn’t on my radar but it is now!
It better be!
OMG I LOVE THIS BOOK. It’s one of the most angsty books I’ve ever read! I was gutted by the end and the year-long wait between this and Dirty Red was torture. I’m glad you didn’t have to go through that. haha
lol – I’m glad I don’t have to wait that long. But honestly, I’m scared to read Dirty Read. I already want to rip her hair out.
All i really want to say is “I told you so”
I absolutely loved this book and this entire series, if anything it gets better with every book but i remember seeing myself in Olivia and that was a powerful thing. I’m so happy you liked the book!
Girl, you should’ve told me SOONER! lol.
Definitely one I wanna read, and I will soon 😀 Can’t help it, all the feels and the crying sound like the purrrrfect combo xDDD
Yes, you DEFINITELY need to read this, Livia.
Oh mann you are reading all the stories that I really want to but haven’t yet! I bought The Opportunist after hearing some raves about it last year, but as usual I haven’t read it yet. It sounds like you thoroughly enjoyed it and it was emotional, I love the sound of it!
You need to catch up on the Addicted series and read this. Like, pronto!
WAIT UNTIL YOU READ BOOK 2. I mean, seriously. AMAZING. Didn’t think I’d like it because of Leah, but actually I found myself sympathising with her haha (something that was once again erased in book 3!)
I’m so hesitant to read Lea’s book. I already sort of sympathize with her, but I still want to punch her repeatedly.
I’ve actually seen this around in the past couple of years and although I’ve checked it out on GR and I’m very interested in Olivia because she’s such a different main character. She’s sort of the protagonist and antagonist all rolled into one. I don’t know why I haven’t read this book yet! I guess I was kinda scared of feeling what you did! But I should stop being a wuss and just read this book, this sounds like something that would have me in rage but would end up loving at the same time. Look what it did to you! Awesome review Christy, will definitely read this now
Stop being a wuss and DO IT! Seriously, this book is so friggin’ good.
“This is the kind of story you absorb; it becomes part of you, forever imprinted on your heart.”
LOVE those types of stories Christy, they’re the absolute best! That being said though, I have to be in the mood for them and prepared to have my emotions go into overdrive, so I’m adding this to my list for when that mood strikes. I can tell this is going to be a heck of an emotional ride:)
Jenny, you must read this book. MUST!
Everyone who has read this series has had great things to say about it. I forced myself to buy it after Nereyda pushed me to do it last year, but I have yet to read it. I seriously need to change that because this sounds like it could make me go through a roller coaster of emotions. I love that you had such strong feelings towards it, Christy.
I’ll have to give it a shot soon. Great review, Christy! 🙂
Nereyda did the right thing. Now that needs to be enforced. READ IT. Read it now, Nick!
Oh wow! My jaw dropped listening to how much this book impacted you. How have I not ever heard about this book??? And the love me with lies series. That alone makes me want to read it.
This is going on my TBR right now!
Great review Christy!
Michele, you HAVE to read this book. Seriously, read it!
But it’s absolutely beautiful in a messed up, raw, and real way Oh man, I need to read this, don’t I? Sounds like some freaking drama going on, and yeah, I do love evil authors. 😉
Yes, you NEED to read it. Like, now!
Wow, I have seen this, but it didn’t really catch my attention. But you certainly have, it sounds like one that I need to read, but with a box of tissues.
You need to read it. It’s sooooo effing good.
Christy QUIT IT! I will never get any of my ARCs read if you don’t keep throwing all these wonderful books my way and making me (yes making me!) want to read them all.
You’re evil.
Muahahaha …. I’m going to MAKE you read this one. Oh yes, I am.
I believe a bought a copy of this last year when Rachel@Reader;s Den reviewed it, and its still in my pile. I can’t bring myself to read a book that will make me sob my eyes out right now, I am still sad so it will have to wait. I am going for funny. Starting Tangled today 🙂
I honestly don’t know how you’d react to this one. It isn’t like a “oh boo hoo” it’s sad. It’s more infuriating, rip your heart out type.
Oh I so need to steer clear of this one. I hate to cry. Then I had to keep reading your review and it makes me curious! Ugh! What to do… 🙂
No, no, no …. you need to read this, Melissa. Seriously, it’s all kinds of emotional, but it may not make you cry like it did me. Just read it!
Oh ma gosh! I haven’t read this one yet so no worries. Glad you enjoyed it, giving me more of a push to pick it up.
Hope you read it and love it.
Good lord, your reactions to this book are fantastic! I’ve had this entire series since it released, but have been putting it off. Thanks for bringing it back to the forefront. Love this review!
You HAVE them but haven’t read them yet?! Oh, Andrea … what am I going to do with you? Get on this book NOW!
This is sooo going on my TBR, because I like feeling messed up..lol I’m masochists that loves this kind of stories.
You need to read this. I’m being dead serious. Read it now!
Oh dang it. Okay. On my list for when I’m ready for a major bawl. I’ve heard she’s amazing from quite a few people but just never made it there. One day 🙂
Read it, Anna. It isn’t like a ‘boohoo this so sad’ type of thing. It’s wonderfully fucked up!
Oh, man, reading the synopsis alone was enough to pull my heartstrings. I can totally feel and see the effect of this book on you, Christy! It’s honestly endearing, haha! I can’t wait to dive into this one myself. I’m getting that urge to read it first before my ARCs just because of your reaction!
DO IT! Read it soon!
No, no, I can’t. I can’t have my heart hurt like that. It’s too much! I don’t know if I could handle this book.
Yes, yes, you can! And you WILL! I swear, do not make me hunt you down, Jennifer. Read this book!
Oh gosh, I know I have this. Maybe I should make a week of it and read this, Mud Vein, Killing Sarai and the next one after that. Awesome contemporary mind fuckery.
You are certainly missing out on some AMAZING books!
LAWD, but this book was a mindfuck. I can’t wait to see what you think about the next one. You are reading the next one, right? 😉
Hell yes, I’m going to read the 2nd book. I can’t wait to hate Lea more. lol
*sigh* I just started Mud Vein last night, and I’m a bit confused by what’s going on, but totally digging it. But this one sounds even better. I’m off to buy it now!! Damn you Christy!!!
lol – Keep with it. Omg, Liz … yes, get The Opportunist! Holy crap, is it ever good.
I hadnt heard of this book before but it sounds really good. Thanks for the review! After reading it I cant wait to get my hands on a copy!!!
