Tagged: The Book Blogger Test
I usually don’t do these, but when Joy @ Joyousreads tagged me, I figured why not. I’m narcissistic, so it should be easy to talk about myself. Kidding. Kind of.
What are your top 3 book pet peeves?
- Holding breaths – “I released the breath I didn’t realize I was holding …” I swear, I seriously want to punch something every time I read this. I bet it’s in at least 98% of the 60+ books I’ve read this year, so far. Authors, stop doing this!! Just. STOP.
- Magically appearing vehicles – It drives me crazy (pun totally intended) when Character A drives to a certain destination, then somehow goes somewhere else with another Character B in a different vehicle. Then Character A eventually gets dropped off at home without their own vehicle, but the next day or whenever they go out to get in their car, it’s like it has always been there. Uh, what the hell? How did your car get home? You left it at the first destination! Guess it’s magic. There are different variations of this, but you get the idea.
- Romanticized abuse – I’m not talking about when an unhealthy relationship is acknowledged or the characters are growing and/or working through it – that’s life. I’m talking about when a character (usually the dude) is a demeaning dick and/or even physically abusive, but it’s twisted into romance. I’ve seen this a lot more in YA and it’s disgusting.
Describe your perfect reading spot.
Anywhere outside in the warm sun. Mountains, beach, lake, backyard … whatever. If the weather is warm and the sun is shining, then I’m a happy reader.
Tell us three book confessions.
- I used to have hundreds of books, but gave then all away after I got my first kindle. Don’t blame the kindle, though, it isn’t his fault. I just realized that I didn’t like the obsessive hoarder mentality I had with them. And there were a couple of instances that made me realize that there are a lot of people who could be enjoying them instead of them sitting on my shelves and in boxes. I no longer keep any physical books I get no matter how bad I want to, they are always found a new home. The only book I have is my signed copy of The Night Circus.
- I appreciate it when publishers send me books, I really do, but I don’t really like it when they send them unsolicited. There’s a good chance I won’t read it, and then I feel a little guilty. I know this is a psychological marketing strategy, so that might be why it bothers me.
- I don’t reread books. I’ve only reread one, and that’s because I was reading it with someone the 2nd time. I’ve gone back and read certain parts or skimmed, but never fully read them. There are books that make me want to, and I could see myself doing so in the future, but I just haven’t when there are so many unread books to read.
When was the last time you cried over a book?
Listen, I’m a hardcore bitch, I don’t cry. Kidding. Mostly. I actually cry more while reading than I do anything else, and that’s part of why I love books so much – they make me feeeeel. As of this moment, Love, In English by Karina Halle made me ugly cry.
How many books are on your bedside table?
Nada, zero, zilch. Unless you count when my kindle is on it. Then technically, there are hundreds.
What is favourite snack whilst reading a book?
Whatever kind of snack I’m in the mood for. My current obsession is Lays Limon chips. Yummm …
Name three books you would recommend to everyone.
- The Time Travelers Wife – It’s very sentimental to me.
- The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane – No matter your age, read it!
- Twilight … Ha! Kidding. I do not recommend that. Every Day by David Levithan
Show us a picture of your favourite shelf in your bookshelf.
But there aren’t any books …
Write how much books mean to you in three words:
Words can’t express.
What is your biggest reading secret?
Hmmm … I can’t think of one. Well, okay … I’m a paperback abuser. When I read paperbacks (rare anymore) I bend the books all the way back and crack the spine throughout reading so they stay open easier. I know, I’m awful.
This was super fun to read, Christy! Thank you so much for sharing your answers. I’ll be sharing my “replies” to yours:
1.) Romanticized Abuse. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PUTTING THIS. There are too many of this hideous kind of romance in many New Adult and Adult these days and it boggles the mind why it’s even there in the first place. Abuse is NOT okay. It is NEVER okay. Romanticizing it like it’s dreamy and cool is just very irresponsible. Unhealthy relationships should never, ever be encouraged.
2.)Ever since I had my Kindle, I’ve gotten less inclined to read from physical books. I dunno, they’re heavy and everything, and I’m not the kind of gets a high from sniffing the pages. I am thinking of giving away mine now, too, since they are just gathering dust in my shelf!
It’s interesting, because I avoided NA for a long time because I was under the assumption that that was all NA was, but I was so wrong. I have found some great ones. When I look over the books I’ve read, the most disturbing abusive ones fall under the YA category. Scary.
oh that’s nice, it’s an interesting post, always so interesting to learn more about another blogger!
I do like reading these posts by other blogger. 🙂
Holding breaths is annoying. I also hate the over use of blushing. In all my life I have only met one person that visibly blushes! LOL Yet in books everyone is red as heck left and right. I also love Time Traveler’s Wife and Every Day. I have been trying to keep most of my books on my kindle but I’ve been buying more and more since I go to a lot of author signings and they need something to sign! But I prefer reading on my kindle.
Yes, there is way too much blushing going on in books lately. Haha – see, I want to go to the signing to meet authors, but I don’t even keep signed books. Except Night Circus.
I should really read the Timetraveller’s Wife now, because I have a copy but I just haven’t read it yet, and that just sucks. I should. Especially when you highly recommend it. I’ve also been tagged in this one on another blog.
I have to agree that the breath holding is kind of annoying and ugh the romanticized abuse, gosh, can they stop doing that?!
You should definitely read it since you already have it. 🙂
OMG, the holding breath thing drives me crazy!
You gave away books? I just died a little inside. lol
I have reread many a good book. But it doesn’t happen often.
OMG, paperback abuser!!! We can no longer be friends. (okay, I will give you a second chance. :D)
Thanks for the tag. I will do this maybe next week.
lol. 6-7 years ago I would never have thought I’d get rid of my books, but I did. It’s freeing. Oh good thing paperbacks are rarely in my clutches anymore. 🙂
Ha! I don’t like to cry, it gives me a headache. I have to say, I have never held my breath without knowing I was, seems I can’t hold my breath anyway. I’ll pass out on the floor. lol.. It cracks me up to read these types of lines.
Sometimes that headache from crying feels good, in a weird way. lol
You and my mom would get along so well Christy! She’s a paperback abuser as well. The first thing she does when she gets a book is fold the front cover all the way back:) And you never reread books? I’m a huge rereader, I can’t help it. Mostly when I need a break from review books but don’t want the stress of the unknown. I just like to settle with a favorite book and enjoy:) This was such a fun post, thanks for sharing all the little Christy tidbits!
Haha – glad to know I’m not alone in my abusive ways. I think I’d be more inclined to reread if I had more time to or was a faster reader.
LOL I hadn’t thought about the breath holding one! omg now that’s all I’m gonna see. I have a few like that too in my reads that I swear every time they pop up I wanna go “Dude. Really? More lip nibbling? O.o” lol
The vehicle thing gets me too. I had a disappearing one in a book this last week and all I could think was WHERE is it? And how is he home and it’s not?! ::snort::
Heh I’ll play on this 🙂 Will post it up this weekend 🙂
lol – have fun with the holding breath thing. It drives me crazy, even in the best damn books.
lmao, yes the holding breath thing without realizing drives me nuts too. How can you forget to breath? But I guess I never experiences that myself lol
And I know the feeling about the cars.
I am a book hoarder D: I have many … I should prob find homes for the ones I read since I don’t reread either.
I know, right? lol
Grr I hate romanticized abuse too which is why I stay away from NA & MC books if I can help it!!! While YA is notorious for love triangles and insta-love, NA & MC romance novels are infamous for misogyny and emotional abuse. Ugh!
P.S. Shared this post directly via shareaholic, reached my Triberr limit just letting you know in case you checked the stats and I’m missing. Eep!
I’ve ran into all those issues more in YA than have NA so far. I try to be picky when picking NA, but they don’t always work out for me. And there are a few popular ones I stay far away from.
There’s a limit on triberr? Huh – that’s fine though, I don’t even keep track. 🙂
Holding breaths – “I released the breath I didn’t realize I was holding …” I swear, I seriously want to punch something every time I read this. I bet it’s in at least 98% of the 60+ books I’ve read this year, so far. Authors, stop doing this!! Just. STOP
YES. Please.
Okay, now I’m releasing the breath I hadn’t known I was holding 😉 at
I used to have hundreds of books, but gave then all away after I got my first kindle.
You have one book? I. Can. Not. Ohhh, I would have so much room if I did that. But I couldn’t.
How many books are on your bedside table?
Nada, zero, zilch. Unless you count when my kindle is on it. Then technically, there are hundreds.
My books are my bedside table. I know, it’s bad. 🙁
lol – yep, only one book. Well, now I have four, but 3 will go to a good home soon. 😀
High five! I agree with almost everything you said here. The holding the breath thing, yeah I see that all the time. So stupid. I give away my books too because I can’t stand having all the books cluttering around collecting dust and I know that others can enjoy them. I am holding two giveaways and then taking the rest to the library. I hate it too when I get books unsolicited in the mail, early on I would have loved it, but now it is just another damn book I probably won’t have time to read and then I feel guilty too.
Anyway it was fun getting to know you a bit more 🙂
These posts can be really fun. It’s nice to get to know bloggers a bit better. I tend to bend my paperback books too. It’s just difficult to read them if they don’t STAY OPEN. haha
I’m definitely a book hoarder, though i have gotten rid of a lot of books in the past year. I try not to hold on to TOO much, but I just have so many books I still need to read.
Ooh, this was fun and interesting! A lot of people hate the “held breaths” thing. I feel exactly the same about unsolicited books. I used to feel obligated to review, but that passed quickly, especially when I would never consider it on my own. Now I pass them on, which costs money, but oh well….
What a fun post! Oh I hate to cry so much that I will pass on a book that will have me balling like a baby. I also will DNF any book that uses rape as a romantic element… so I get what you are saying.
Haha, the holding the breath! I’m surprised not more people are passing out. Oh I’m totally a sunshine kinda reader too! Nothing beats basking in the sun with a good book (except maybe napping in the sun)!
I love Every Day, I hope there’s more, the ending felt open-ended, haha.
Pssssh. You are the least narcissistic person I know, thank you very much. So what you’re saying is…you don’t have any physical copies of books?! What. I can’t. I can’t even. They do say that bending the spine of a book prolong its life. I don’t know who said that to me, but they’re obviously, well, WRONG. Lol.
Thanks for doing this, and so sorry for bothering you!
I heart you. HARD.
Oh please, you did not bother me. 😀
Nope (couldn’t resist the p popping), I never would’ve thought I’d get rid of them, but I did. It makes me feel lighter though.
OMG YES! Held breaths! All of that is 100% the truth. I don’t have a Kindle, but I give books away after reading them, and the only re-read I have is Jane Eyre. *high five*
:)) You’re right with the breath holding thing, haha. How can you not realize you’re holding breath? I mean, you’re asphyxiating, lol!
With you on the hoarder tendencies paperbacks elicit. Ofc, so do ebooks, but I don’t feel guilty about them because I don’t actually see them all day every day as I would the paperbacks, and they don’t take up physical space to drive me crazy that I’m running out of places to stack them, lol 😀 So I’m hoarding ebooks, like a boss 😀
Loved to find out more about you! 🙂
Shall I beat you now or later?
Just kidding 😉 Who else can you tag that is far enough away that is guaranteed to miss when they throw things in your direction?
Miraculous Journey? Really? Hmmm, my son’s elementary school read that as an entire school. All I remember is being sad. But I’d like to read The Time Traveler’s Wife!
😀
You almost gave me a heart attack with the Twilight recommandation ! Nice to know some more about you 😉
Awesome post, Christy! Totally agree on your pet-peeves and laughed my ass off at Twilight joke :))) Joy, the evil woman, tagged me too, and I can’t wait to post it 🙂
Oh this looks like fun. I missed all sorts of things while I was away. I have been stalking your back posts to see what I missed last week. Haha
lol – You didn’t miss much.
