In Darynda Jones's Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet, sometimes being the grim reaper really is that. Grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above. Or at least get dressed. She quickly realizes something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. The more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it.
In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, has been cleared of all charges. He is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that the city of Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved. Just when life was returning to normal, Charley is thrust back into the world of crime, punishment, and the devil in blue jeans.
Charley, Charley, Charley … you are always a joy. Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet is yet another wonderful installment of the Charley Davidson series. I have read the past couple of the books fairly close together and worried that I might start getting tired of the series, but no, quite the opposite. After I finish one book, I compulsively grab for the next, not getting enough.
Poor Charley was really put through the wringer in the last book, and now she’s suffering from PTSD. The woman refused to leave her apartment for two months, becoming a home shopping hoarder. When a woman comes to Charley needing help, she decides to put her big girl panties on and take the case. I really enjoyed this one and was completely blindsided with its outcome. Major props to Darynda for that.
My favorite bikers are back, too, and of course, Charley has to get herself in the thick of their shenanigans. I absolutely love the relationship Charley has with these guys, especially Donovan. She knows what she’s dealing with and doesn’t over think it. If she wants to kiss a dude, then she does; no need for all that angst bullcrap. Just another thing on the list of why I love Charley.
In Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet, Charley discovers a lot more about what exactly she is and can do, thanks to the Reyes. There’s actually much more to it than I had expected, which I found very interesting. I also enjoyed getting to know Reyes a little more, even though the guy still hasn’t completely won me over. I know it’s mostly just my taste in guys holding me back, though. However, I am so looking forward to more of Charley and Reyes together, especially after that ending.
I’m so happy that this series continues to be so entertaining, with a heroine that I absolutely love. They’re the type of books I dread reading in public because I know people look at me funny when I crack up. I wouldn’t have it any other way, though!

Awesome review!!! YES, I love that Charley just thinks about things and does it – no angsty nonsense here!! I can’t wait to start Fifth Grave! Did you see the 2 short stories, too – Glow and Shimmer? They are after Fifth Grave and they look HOT!
I remember someone telling me there is a short story on Darynda’s website but not to read it until after I read the 5th book, so I haven’t even peeked yet. Hopefully I can get 5th Grave this month, because I think 6th is coming up here soon.
Oh good. I was needing motivation to get caught up with this series, and you just gave it to me. Well done 🙂
Yes, you need to get caught up, especially since the 6th book will be out soon. 🙂
Isn’t this series just fabulous? I am surprised with something new each time I pick one up!!
Indeed! 😀
I need to get caught up on this series Christy! I read book one and loved it, Charley is just too much fun, but I haven’t made it to the remaining books yet. I’m glad to see that even at book 4, this series is still going strong for you. And now of course I want to know what happens at the end with Charley and Reyes!
Hurry up, Jenny! The 6h book will be released soon.
It’s great that it’s still so good so far into a series, haven’t read them yet but I was reading through some of the quotes and ha, they sound fun and hilarious.
Oh, you definitely need to give this series a try!
Love the books that make you laugh in public. Those are the best kinds. Charlie sounds freaking awesome. Glad you loved this one! 🙂
You really need to read these, Jenea.
Bwaha I have a couple I won’t read in public either because yeah I’d totally be looked at like the crazy lady. I really need to get this series read. I have the first 4 books but just haven’t managed to squeeze them in yet but darnnit I’m so gonna try in the next couple months.
They’re really quick reads, so squeeze them in soon! 🙂
I really need to start this series. 😀
Yes, Bea, you do!
Ahh yes, this is the one where Charley has a shopping channel addiction, I liked all the reveals regarding her and Reyes, and I am with you, I am still not one hundred percent sold on Reyes but I liked him much more in book five. I remember that scene with Charley eating a banana, now I don’t think I will ever eat a banana in public again.
lol – yeah, I’ve never eaten a banana in public, unless I tore pieces off. That part was funny, though!
I LOVE this series!!! I’m excited for you to read the next one!
I’m excited too! I hope to read it sometime this month.
Great review Christy :). This is one of my fav paranormal series, even I was a bit disappointed with the last book because it was full of cliches :/.
Reyes, still haven’t won you over O.O? How come? But I think after the next book he sure will 😉
Guys like Reyes run a fine line with me. I’ve heard that I’ll be more on board with him in the 5th book. I hope so! 🙂
Squee, you are almost caught up and let me tell ya the Fifth is my favorite of the series, I laughed so hard I cried and swooned so bad my hubby noticed..hehe
Damn, now I’m even more excited to start it. Ugh .. soon … very soon!
this is the first time I’ve come upon this series but I love the idea that the female MC a grim reaper! Will check out book 1 🙂
I’m so glad to see you’re enjoying the series. I have the first book and must take time to give it a try.
Great review!
Excellent Review Christy!!! I’ve been curious about this series! It’s always fun to discover a new series and the fact that you can’t read them fast enough, and they get better and better tells me that you love this series! The mention of the home shopping network had me chuckling! It’s very easy to get addicted! LOL I’m glad you got to learn more about the main characters, and loved the ending!
I love this series! I’m so glad you are enjoying it too 🙂
I have never heard of this series before and you just made me want to try it out RIGHT. NOW. While I’m not exactly a fan of the cover, you make it sound really intriguing. I feel like I’m missing out that I don’t know about Charley and she sounds like a fricking awesome gal. Yup, I’ll be buying this as soon as I can type amazon.com on my address bar. HAHA!
I really, really need to get my hands on this series. I have heard such great things.
If you love the Charley Davidson series, I think you would love the Weather Warden series too. The lead character, Jo, sounds exactly like Charley. Lovely review Christy!
Ha! Okay, so I checked out the Weather Warden series on Goodreads, and it turns out I added to 1st book to my tbr in May 2011. Then when I read the blurb, I realized that I read an anthology that had a story from that series. Looks like I really do need to read it. 😀
I want more Donovan, actually! 🙂 the bikers were my highlight of the book :)) Great review, Christy!
I love those guys!
I can’t wait until I get caught up on this series so I can see if Reyes wins me over, or if I’m a bit less enthralled with him like you. It seems like everyone is obsessed with him! Still, it’s good that you’re rooting for Charley and him as a couple. So happy you’re still enjoying this series and looking forward to the next one. Awesome review!
hehehehehehehehehe That’s all I have to say. *winks*
