This weeks question: How do you choose what books to review?
———————————————————-
If I was asked this question a year ago, I would have said “I pick books that sound good.” Now, it’s a little different. Of course one criteria still is that it sounds good, but I’ve had to be a lot more picky the last few months. I made the decision to make blogging less stressful and read more non-review books, so I’ve cut way back.
One of the main things that will make me choose a review book, is if it is part of a series I love. That’s just a no brainer. There’s no thinking it over when it comes to series like The Weird Girls and Pushing the Limits. I will always make time for them.
If a book isn’t part of a series I’ve already started, then it has to really grab me. Not only does it need to sound good, it needs to get me excited to read it. Even then, I may not pick it up, because it has to fit the right time frame since I’m not a fast reader. If I know I won’t be able to read by 2 weeks after the release date, then I use self-control and move on. I don’t want to get behind on reviews like I used to.
Also, I don’t accept review requests anymore, except from a handful of authors that I ♥ dearly, including Misty Provencher, Trisha Wolfe, and Rhiannon Frater. When they tell me they have a new book coming out, then I make time.
Even though I’ve become more strict and try my hardest to be certain I’ll like the book, I’ve still had bombs.

How about you?
I wish I had restrain when it came to review books. 😀 I am fixing to start a Trisha Wolfe book soon, can’t wait. Happy reading.

Yes, I agree! There are certain authors that I make time for. Then there are books that sound SO good, but just failed so I’m trying to be more picky. Great post!
I rarely accept review requests from authors whose books I haven’t already come across before. I was a lot more open to new books when I first started blogging, but it’s pretty impossible to squeeze them all in now. I’m trying to read more non-review books this year though.
I have started to become more picky too, I have had too. My time is just too important and unfortunately due to a lot of bad books lately I just have to be more choosey. It has been hard for me to say no because I always feel bad but…that is how it goes sometimes.
I will always say yes to those authors I love like you do because I know I will get something I love. Other than that, right now I am only accepting ARCs and I am trying to be more selective on those as well.
Aaah, restraint. I need some of that. I am behind on so many series that I should, once I finish my current batch of promised reviews, stick to just those. There are some authors that I will always make time and room for – Kelley Armstrong, Patricia Briggs, Jodi Redford, D.B. Reynolds, and Krista D Ball.
I do need to get pickier about what I choose though I already turn down a ton of requests as is. I hate saying no. 😀
I am going to learn from you and do the same. I am feeling too stressed trying to keep up and it is time to read more for me 🙂
I need to be more like you and review more for pleasure and what I want. I love how you decide what you’re going to review – and I absolutely have to get to that first Weird Girls book I have sitting here!
I agree, any Katie McGarry series book is a definite for me. And, man do I need to start Cornerstone! All my favorite bloggers love Misty’s series. I feel so behind the times! 🙂
It seems I’ve been reading almost nothing but review books for the last month… but I’m having fun. Still, I’ve started to get a bit more selective in what I request.
