When the whole world is after you, sometimes it seems like you can't run fast enough.
Will
Maybe I'm too late. Maybe Zoe's dad stole all her fifteen years and taught her to be scared. I'll undo it. Help her learn to be strong again, and brave. Not that I'm any kind of example, but we can learn together.
Zoe
Maybe it'll take Will years to come to terms with being abandoned. Maybe it'll take forever. I'll stay with him no matter how long it takes to prove that people don't always leave, don't always give up on you.
Damn! That was my initial reaction after finishing Nobody But Us. I knew I had to read it as soon as I read the blurb. I ended up liking it quite a bit! The blurb says it’s “Bonnie and Clyde meets If I Stay.” Now, I’ve never read If I Stay, but I am familiar with Bonnie and Clyde, and I know how their love story went – not so good. So I was very curious about how this book was going to play out.
Zoe and Will are on the run, but all they want to do is get away from their little North Dakota town and live happily ever after in Vegas. Unfortunately, their road to happiness is going out the window the closer they get to their destination. Zoe is 15, and has been abused by her drunken dad all her life. Everyone knew where the bruises came from, but no one said anything. Until Will. Will has spent most of his life in foster care and group homes, but when he turns 18, he and Zoe run away together. These are two young, broken people in love, and all they want to do is take care of and save each other. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right?
I felt such empathy for Zoe and Will, and kind of wanted to save both of them myself. We get little flashbacks throughout the book of how their relationship came to be; how they are so sweet together, yet completely screwed up. The farther away they get from home, the more they discover about not only each other, but themselves as well. It was so heart-breaking at times, but I was always rooting for them.
The predicaments they got into kept snowballing, getting them into more and more trouble. It was interesting seeing each situation from their perspectives, yet knowing how it would look to everyone else. I honestly had no idea how this book was going to end, because a HEA was looking dim the more I read. I’ll just say that I was a little shocked, even though I shouldn’t have been. This is not a happy-go-lucky road trip book, but it was beautiful nonetheless.
Overall, I enjoyed Nobody But Us a lot. It was an emotional ride that I won’t forget anytime soon.
I’ve heard mixed things about this book but I’ve enjoyed the excerpts I’ve read over the last week, so I think I might give it a try one day. I’m glad you enjoyed it, Christy! Brilliant review.
