Hi everyone! Today I am taking part in the Something Wicked Comes event hosted by Rainy Day Ramblings & Babbling About Books. There are a lot of different blogs participating, so make sure to go enter all of their giveaways. You can find the entire list by clicking on the banner above.
When I decided to do this event, I immediately knew that I wanted to feature one of my most favorite series/author. The Dark Inside Series by Jeyn Roberts is full of all kinds of creepy goodness that I can’t get enough of! And Jeyn was nice enough to do an interview, which totally made my week! Plus, you have a chance to win your own copy at the end of the post.
About Dark Inside:
Since the beginning of mankind, civilizations have fallen: the Romans, the Greeks, the Aztecs… and now us. Huge earthquakes rock the world. Cities are destroyed. But something even more awful is happening: An ancient evil has been unleashed, and it’s turning everyday people into hunters, killers, and crazies.
This is the world Mason, Aries, Clementine, and Michael are living in—or rather, trying to survive. Each is fleeing unspeakable horror, from murderous chaos to brutal natural disasters, and each is traveling the same road in a world gone mad.
Amid the throes of the apocalypse and clinging to love and meaning wherever it can be found, these four teens are on a journey into the heart of darkness—and to find each other and a place of safety.
Michele @ A Belle’s Tales recently reviewed both books and loved them, so she asked a question too.
LoB: I absolutely love the Dark Inside series. What inspired you to write it?
Jeyn: Dark Inside was based on a series of dreams I used to have as a teenager. I used to have these crazy end-of-the-world dreams in which I was always hiding out in places with a group of people while something was trying to kill us off. Some of the scenes in the first book are real dreams (the shopping cart Bagger with the head). What can I say? I have a strange subconscious.
LoB: Confession: I open Google Maps while reading books to get a better picture of the actual area. The locations in your books are very specific, do you map out where everything is going to take place first, or decide as you’re writing the story?
Jeyn: Confession. I spent a lot of time with Google Maps open while writing this book too. haha Especially Clementine and Michael’s stories because they were both from parts of the USA I’ve never been. Mason’s story was easier because I’ve driven the route he takes across Canada many times. I grew up in Saskatoon. Aries was easy too because it’s my hometown in Vancouver and I know the city well. But no, I don’t really map out where everything is going to take place. I tend to decide as I write the story.
LoB: If you were in the books, which one character would you want watching your back?
Jeyn: Mason. Totally Mason.
LoB: I don’t scare easy, but Baggers freak me out big time. Were there any scenes that you found creepy to write?
Jeyn: I found the scene in the shopping mall to be creepy, mostly because of the mannequins. haha Those things kinda freak me out. And the shopping cart Bagger always made me cringe a bit. But most of the time I’m pretty fearless with my own writing.
LoB: Would you rather face zombies or a Baggers?
Jeyn: Zombies. Baggers are too intelligent and they can fool you. Zombies just drool lots.
Michele: When you came up with the idea of Dark Inside, was it always from the POV’s of Mason, Michael, Clementine, and Aries? Or did you start from the view point of just one character and the others joined in as you was writing? Did you always “hear” the voice of “Nothing” from the beginning? (I still get chills just thinking about that particular POV!)
Jeyn: Nothing was with me from the very beginning. I started with him. He was a good voice just banging around in my brain. It started with all four characters. I wanted to write something from multiple perspectives, to show how the same thing (yet very different) affects people in different parts of the world.
LoB: Is there anything else you’d like to share about upcoming projects or events?
Jeyn: I’ve got some new projects that I’m working on but it’s still too soon to share anything. But I am working on a horror story set in Alaska, a ghost story, and two paranormal romances. So yeah, there’s lots on my plate.
Thank you so much, Jeyn!! I can’t wait to read what you write next.
