This whole grim reaper thing should have come with a manual.
Or a diagram of some kind.
A flow chart would have been nice.

Charley Davidson is a part-time private investigator and full-time grim reaper. Meaning, she sees dead people. Really. And it's her job to convince them to "go into the light." But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (like murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she's been having about an entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely. But what does he want with Charley? And why can't she seem to resist him? And what does she have to lose by giving in?

With scorching-hot tension and high-octane humor, First Grave on the Right is your signpost to paranormal suspense of the highest order.

I heard so much about how great this series was and knew I needed to read it. So when I had a chance to read First Grave on the Right for a read-along, I jumped on it. Now I’m totally hooked on the series! Great characters, interesting storyline, and lots of laughs – can’t go wrong with that.

There are a lot of notable characters in this book. Of course I have to mention Charley Davidson, a sarcastic, tough, and caring private investigator. Oh yeah, and she’s a grim reaper. The dearly departed flock to her, sometimes at the most inconvenient moments, but she always helps them. I love her attitude – hard on the outside, soft on the inside. Then there is Cookie, Charley’s neighbor/assistant/best friend. The two of them together are quite a pair – think Lucy and Ethel after drinking a lot of coffee. Charley has a pretty good support system – living and dead – even if they don’t know the extent of what she actually does. And just have to say that I love Mr. Wong!

There is one character that I haven’t mentioned yet. Reyes. I heard a lot about this man from a lot of people who were staking claim on him, so I was dying to find out what all the hoopla was about. I’m not going to giving any details away regarding what he is, but it’s very apparent from the beginning of the book that he and Charley have some kind of connection. A hot and steamy connection. I’m just going to say it… I wasn’t that swooned by Reyes. Sure, he’s smokin’ hot, mysterious, and can make Charley’s toes curl, but I need more than that. Don’t get me wrong, I totally get Charley’s attraction to him, but I really didn’t get much from him. I’m sure more of his personality and what exactly he wants will come out in the next book, though.

Something I really liked about First Grave were the ghosts that Charley helped throughout the book, that had nothing to do with the investigation she was working on. I think the author did a great job at showing how much the ghosts are part of Charley’s life, and that she has to deal with them in all sorts of circumstances. Some were funny, some were sad, and some were not what they seemed.

Overall, I loved First Grave on the Right. I’m really looking forward to reading the second book as soon as I can. I definitely recommend this book if you like to laugh. Who doesn’t like to laugh?!

Yeah, I think you’d like it. There are a lot of ladies who swoon of Reyes, but I’m not one of them. lol

  1. This is a series that I have heard so much about too. I really wanted to join the read-a-long but I just didn’t have time. 🙁 Hopefully I will be able to get to this book in the near future.

I just packed up and moved back to school for the year and I realized how many books I actually have that I need to read. It is super scary! (in an aweosme bookish way) but when I got to school I had even more books waiting for me! I think I need to quit law school and just read full time haha

I wish you could have joined us.

lol – ugh… moving all of them would not be fun. Ha! You could become a bum and hang out at the library all day.

I enjoyed this one too and I’ve read the short story and book two. It just keeps getting more interesting. Nice review!

  3. I love Charley and the way she helps ghosts! Reyes is hot but I agree I didn’t get much from him as to why he should be with Charley. I like Garrett! The read-along was a lot of fun!

  4. Garrett?! Oh no, Jen!!!

I actually didn’t get much from Reyes in the first book either. But I think the strength in the series is the character of Charley and her relationships with her uncle, father, best friend/assistant, and certain bounty hunters.

I can’t wait for you guys to get further in the series (mawahahaha!) And if you haven’t read about Darynda, she’s a pretty cool person. I admire her for her sacrifices for her family.

Stupendous review!!! Thanks for reminding me about how awesome the first book was (memories…)
