How did Riot escape from the Night Church? How did she survive the Rot & Ruin—and the horrors of her own past? There’s only one way to find out....
Jonathan Maberry explores the origins of a fascinating new character in an exclusive e-short story set in the land of the Rot & Ruin.
“I’m thinking of kicking you in a bad place.” – Riot
Yup, I think Riot is going to be a nice addition to Flesh & Bone, the third book in the Benny Imura series. Dead & Gone is a novella, about 85 pages long, that focuses solely on fifteen year old Riot. We get to know Riot as she flees a group that call themselves reapers. She’s pretty tough though, so she’s not easy to apprehend.
The beginning of Dead & Gone is a little on the slow side, but I think it did a good job at doing what it was meant to do – give background on Riot. She meets some other interesting characters that I’m curious about, and their role in Flesh & Bone. I really enjoyed getting Riot’s perspective, especially knowing that she’ll eventually meet up with Benny and the rest of the group. This takes place about 3 year prior to Rot & Ruin (book #1), so it’s interesting to think about what connections there might have been throughout the first two books. And I’ll be honest, I’m glad that this was released as a novella instead of trying to add the information into Flesh & Bone.
If you’re a fan of the series, this is a must read, especially before reading Flesh & Bone. If you haven’t started this series yet, then you need to do so immediately.
You can read First Night Memories (#0.5) for free, which gives insight to what it was like for some of the characters when the world changed.
In the Land of the Dead (#1.5) is bonus material for between Rot & Ruin and Dust & Decay.
on a scale of 1 to 10 how badly do i need to read this series? 10 being read it now!
Seriously, you need to read these. NEED!
ok, off to look for book one!
oh B&N has the entire boxed ebook set for 30.00 ….ahhhhhh
Riot sounds like a pretty entertaining character. Love that quote! 😀 I haven’t read this series yet but I’ve heard good things. I will have to pick them up soon! 🙂
Sam, pleaaaase read the 1st book. I promise you, you will be happy you did. 😀
Glad you enjoyed the story! DEAD & GONE takes place about three years before FLESH & BONE, so it’s technically a prequel to the whole series.
We’re also in SERIOUS discussions about a possible film based on ROT & RUIN. Can’t share any of the details yet, though.
Here are links to free ROT & RUIN bonus content: FIRST NIGHT MEMORIES includes an excerpt from Nix’s Journal and the story of how Tom Imura escaped with Benny on First Night: http://www.simonandschuster.com/admin_assets/3477_First_Night_Memories.pdf
IN THE LAND OF THE DEAD takes place between ROT & RUIN and DUST & DECAY http://www.simonandschuster.com/admin_assets/5539_Dust__Decay_BONUS_Material.pdf
Ahh, okay. I’ll add the info about the timing and those links in my post.
And my son is ecstatic about the possible film. 😀
I’m pretty psyched about the film thing, too! Can’t share details yet (but we have the PERFECT actor to play Tom Imura).
Oh c’mon, talk about a total tease! lol
I can’t wait!!!!!! These are my favourite books and I never shut up about them! I haven’t been able to find a place to read any of the novellas sadly but I haven’t stopped looking. Can’t wait for the movies!
I can get it from Amazon, and use a kindle app on your computer or phone if you don’t have an ereader.
Wow! This series has been on my radar for awhile and if I could ever dig out then I could read more of what I want! I should just ask the author to be on my blog then I HAVE to read the books!
