Atticus Sullivan, last of the Druids, doesn’t care much for witches. Still, he’s about to make nice with the local coven by signing a mutually beneficial nonaggression treaty—when suddenly the witch population in modern-day Tempe, Arizona, quadruples overnight. And the new girls are not just bad, they’re badasses with a dark history on the German side of World War II.
With a fallen angel feasting on local high school students, a horde of Bacchants blowing in from Vegas with their special brand of deadly decadence, and a dangerously sexy Celtic goddess of fire vying for his attention, Atticus is having trouble scheduling the witch hunt. But aided by his magical sword, his neighbor’s rocket-propelled grenade launcher, and his vampire attorney, Atticus is ready to sweep the town and show the witchy women they picked the wrong Druid to hex.
First things first – audiobooks and I have never mixed well; I tend to zone out while listening to them. Then a few week ago I received an offer for a free audiobook, so I thought I’d give one a try. I absolutely loved Hounded, the first book from the Iron Druid Chronicles, and had heard from various sources that the audiobooks for the series were great. So, Hexed it was!
I did have some reservations about listening to Hexed, because I love Hounded and the characters so much, that I was afraid the narrator would totally ruin it for me. But holy crap, Luke Daniels did a fantastic job narrating! Not only was his voice perfect for Atticus, but he also did all of the different characters, accents, and languages so well – I was truly impressed. I actually paid attention and didn’t want to stop listening, which is saying a lot for me.
Okay, so now about the actual story. One word: LOVE! I am completely in love with this series, and I love Atticus more than ever! Never has a book made me laugh so much, with the exception of Hounded. Plus, there is a lot more action in Hexed, which was kick ass. Sadly, there was also some heart break that made me cry.
After defeating Aenghus Og in Hounded, Atticus tries to go back to his “normal” life, but that doesn’t happen – he can’t catch a break! Actually, he could walk away from most of it, but his loyalty is something I admire about him. He vowed to set things right when Aenghus Og scorched the land, and he’s determined to keep it. If that means taking down fallen angels, kicking witch ass, or clearing out a gaggle of Bacchants – he’ll do it.
There were a lot of the characters from the first book, plus some new ones. My favorite character, the morrigan is around. I about died laughing during a certain scene with her and Atticus. She’s so rough and mean even when she’s helping Atticus – I love that crazy goddess! Then there’s Granuaile – still set on becoming a Druid. I enjoy “watching” Atticus occasionally get flustered around her and resort to thoughts of baseball. I have high hopes for Granuaile; not necessarily as a love interest, but as a great ally for Atticus. And of course, everyone’s favorite Irish Wolfhound is funny as ever. All of the characters in Hexed are amazing and played their part perfectly.
Seriously, everyone needs to read this series. I wish I could buy everyone a copy and make them read it. I already downloaded the third book, Hammered, in audiobook format. I’m not joking, people… read it!
I really need to read this series soon! It’s good to hear Hexed is a good follow up to Hounded. Great review!
Oh, Sam… please read the first book. Please!
Welcome to the dark side (aka audiobooks). Luke Daniels is amazing with this series! I honestly doubt I’ll be able to go back to reading the books now.
I also just gave Hounded to my boyfriend’s brother to read because this series is THAT GOOD. 🙂
Honestly, I can’t imagine NOT listening to Luke narrating this series now. I’m definitely sticking with audio for this series.
I want to give my copy of Hounded to someone I know will love it, but I haven’t decided yet.
I need to start this series, based on your review i think its something i would enjoy. Thanks for sharing it!
Read it, read it, read it! Then we can talk about how sexy Atticus is! 😀
OOH I haven’t heard of these books yet. They sound pretty good! I need to add them to my wish list (it’s times like these that I could just be a professional book reader because I have way too many books that I want to read)
I also know what you mean about listening to audio books. I have to be in the right mood or I just can’t concentrate enough on them to get into them.
Thanks for the great review.
Drop everything and read the 1st book! You should try the audiobook for it, because I’m sure Hounded sounds just as good as Hexed.
Now these are the books you should be whoring out on your blog 🙂 I am dying to continue with this series as well. Sounds like I need to snag the audiobook. So glad it was as good as Hounded!
LOL! Whoring out my man Atticus…
Seriously, Heidi, read or listen to it so we can talk spoilers! 😀
Ohhh, I so DO need to read this series. It sounds fantastic. o: I keep seeing more books coming out and feeling I’m so missing something. Come time, come!
Totally agree! I tend to zone out with audio books but I have this on audio and while I did read it first so I knew what was going on, I did love it on audio as well because it was thoroughly entertaining! Love these books!
I haven’t read this series, but it sounds fantastic. I feel the same way about audio books. The only ones that I have loved are the Harry Potter audiobooks. Thanks for the recommendation!
