Amaliya wakes under the forest floor, disoriented, famished and confused. She digs out of the shallow grave and realizes she is hungry... in a new, horrific, unimaginable way...
Sating her great hunger, she discovers that she is now a vampire, the bloodthirsty creature of legend. She has no choice but to flee from her old life and travels across Texas. Her new hunger spurs her to leave a wake of death and blood behind her as she struggles with her new nature.
All the while, her creator is watching. He is ancient, he is powerful, and what's worse is that he's a necromancer. He has the power to force the dead to do his bidding. Amaliya realizes she is but a pawn in a twisted game, and her only hope for survival is to seek out one of her own kind.
But if Amaliya finds another vampire, will it mean her salvation... or her death?
Oh man, this book kicks ass! First of all, the cover totally drew me to the book – I love it. And second, I’ve heard nothing but great things about Rihannon Frater. I was not disappointed in the least with Pretty When She Dies. It definitely isn’t a lets-go-to-prom-with-a-sparkly-vampire type of story (not that there’s anything wrong with that if that’s what you like). I enjoyed the grittiness of this book, and it’s seriously flawed characters.
Amaliya wakes up buried in the forest next to the college she attends, not knowing what’s going on. After digging herself out, she’s stunned and confused about where she is, and it doesn’t take long for things to go from bad to worse. She’s drawn to pulsating thumping at a frat house where a secret party/orgy is taking place (Oh, how I miss college), and kills everyone there. She then discovers that she is a vampire, and who is responsible for creating her and what a major psycho he is. Amaliya decides to go on the run, but first stops off at her family home. And wow, what a mess they are!
After an eventful, crazy journey, Amaliya makes it to Austin, where she runs into Cian (pronounced Key-Inn), a master vampire. These two are so cute, funny, and hot together… seriously, I loved their odd relationship. Cian helps Amaliya learn the vampire ways, and they soon discover that she is much more than a mere vampire. She can not only kill, but she can raise and control the dead, too. Her creator is stalking her and witnesses the power she holds, making him even more interested in her. Not to mention Cian’s perky human fiancé is not pleased with the changes Amaliya is bringing out in Cian. Oh, and Cian’s man-servant, Roberto, is a total a-hole who doesn’t like Amaliya either. If he did to me what he did to her, he’d be toast!
I love Amaliya and I love her style! She’s one tough, smartass chick. At the same time, she’s vulnerable and ultimately a good person. She thinks she has the worst luck, while others think she’s lucky. It’s funny how it’s just a matter of perspective. It cracked me up how she would give Cian a hard time, especially about his fiancé. And Cian is pretty hot, even if he is on the short side. I also adored Amaliya’s grandma, she’s such a firecracker! Do not mess with her grandkids! I actually liked all the characters, even the one’s I didn’t like. Make sense? You know what I mean, the character is bad and you hate them, but they are so good at being bad. Yeah, those.
I seriously hope there will be a sequel, because I love these characters. And if you’re looking for a really good adult vampire story, you should definitely read Pretty When She Dies.
