It's an acquired taste…he just has to acquire it
Elise knows what she wants in the bedroom, and she makes sure she gets it. Her thirst for domination has long been quenched by a stable of men only too happy to bow down before her.
But sexual satisfaction isn't the same as love, and she's been burned in the past by giving her heart too freely.
Niall is handsome, smart, successful and sweet as vanilla. When they meet, their romantic connection is electric, even though he's way on the opposite end of the kink spectrum. Despite how she fights it, Elise falls for him but how can a relationship work when both lovers want to be on top?
I thought Vanilla was made just for me when I read the blurb. I love dominant women, especially with dominant men who will submit. Even better when there’s some power play. This was different though, and wasn’t what I was expecting. I mean, I liked it, but wasn’t blown away by awesomeness or anything.
Vanilla is very much about Elsie and her journey. She is secure in who she is and what she does, and doesn’t hide it. What I love about Elise is she doesn’t fall into one specific role or stereotype, what matters is the pleasure of her and her partner, whatever it may be. Does she like control? Yes, but it’s more complex than that. Finding someone who truly loves and understands her hasn’t been all that easy.
I really like how we get to know Elsie before Niall even makes an appearance. She’s still holding on to a love from the past in an interesting way, and has a current lover with set rules. It’s with this lover we get to experience that dominant side of her without being judged. I honestly didn’t know how it was all going to turn out, but these two relationships played a significant role in a pretty cool way.
When it came to Niall … I felt conflicted at times. He and Elise grow close and develop strong feelings for each other, but Niall doesn’t quite grasp her sexually dominate side. I totally understand his struggle with what he assumed Elsie was like and wanted, but he pulled such a jackass move. I don’t know, he just wasn’t an easy guy for me to like at times. Not because of the way he felt, but because the way he behaved in certain situations.
Despite some of my misgivings about Niall, everything actually came together really well. They both had issues to work through, and learn how to give and take in their own ways. I especially love how it explored how complex people can be instead of fitting one particular mold.
You know who I really fell in love with? Alex, Elsie’s business partner. Throughout the book I kept thinking I wanted more of him, so you can imagine how excited I was to discover he has his own books! I just can’t resist his sense of humor and what his particular kink might be.
Like I said, I liked Vanilla. It’s sexy, sweet and pretty damn hot at times.
