Waverly and Kieran are finally reunited on the Empyrean. Kieran has led the boys safely up to this point, and now that the girls are back, their mission seems slightly less impossible: to chase down the New Horizon, and save their parents from the enemy ship. But nothing is truly as it seems…Kieran’s leadership methods have raised Seth’s hackles— and Waverly’s suspicions. Is this really her fiancé? The handsome, loving boy she was torn from just a short time before? More and more, she finds her thoughts aligned with Seth’s. But if Seth is Kieran’s Enemy No. 1, what does that make her?
In one night, a strange explosion rocks the Empyrean—shooting them off course and delaying their pursuit of the New Horizon—and Seth is mysteriously released from the brig. Seth is the most obvious suspect for the explosion, and Waverly the most obvious suspect for releasing him. As the tension reaches a boiling point, will Seth be able to find the true culprit before Kieran locks them both away—or worse? Will Waverly follow her heart, even if it puts lives at risk? With the balance of power precarious and the clock ticking, every decision counts… every step brings them closer to a new beginning, or a sudden end...
You can find my review for Glow (book #1) HERE.
Finally! I was waiting for this book for over a year. It was even one of my top 5 most anticipated books of 2012. I read the first book, Glow, before it was released last year and fell in love with it. So it felt like I tortured myself because I had to wait even longer to read Spark. Of course, I downloaded it the day it was released and started it a few days later. Now that I’m finished with Spark, I’m back to counting down the days until the 3rd book will be released. Gah, why do I do this to myself?!
When I started Spark, I felt like I was right back on the Empyrean with Waverly, Kieran, Seth, and all the other kids that remained. Which turned out to be 250. That’s right, 250 orphaned kids are all that’s left because of the attack by the New Horizon. When I say kids, that includes the teenagers, but none are over the age of 15 or 16. The duties and responsibilities of running the ship falls on these remaining children. The big questions are: can they function as a productive society with a fair and capable leader? Or will it turn into pure mayhem? And will they ever catch the New Horizon?
Though I loved Glow a little more, I thought the author did a fantastic job with Spark. I found her portrayal of the Empyrean’s struggle to rebuild a thriving society fascinating, and the mentality of not only the individuals, but also the group as a whole was great. Ryan did another wonderful job at giving understanding to the characters motives. Even if you don’t like what someone did, you understand why. That made it harder to flat out dislike a character, even if I disliked their behavior at times. The characters in Spark are complex, and I love that.
The book is told from three point-of-views: Kieran, Waverly, and Seth. I especially liked the addition of Seth’s POV. All three of them go through changes, some for the better, and some for the not so good. They are always learning, growing, and changing. This is something Ryan does so well with her characters – their development could never be described as stagnant.
Overall, this is a great sequel with an ending that will leave you stunned. I wish I could already pre-order the next book, because it’s now one of my most anticipated books of 2013. If you haven’t read Glow yet, please do so!
You can listen to the 1st chapter of the audiobook HERE. It’s from Seth’s POV!
