All Airel ever wanted was to be normal, to disappear into the crowd. But bloodlines can produce surprises, like an incredible ability to heal. Then there’s Michael Alexander, the new guy in school, who is impossibly gorgeous…and captivated by her. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she can hear the sound of pages turning, and another, older story being written. It is the story of an ancient family, of great warriors, of the Sword of Light, and the struggle against an evil so terrible, so far-reaching, that it threatens everything. Airel knew change would be an inevitable part of life. But can she hold on when murder and darkness begin to close in and take away everything she loves? Will she have what it takes when the truth is finally revealed?

I  received an e-book copy of Airel from Aaron Patterson as part of a giveaway.  Exciting!  The book is about a seventeen-year-old girl who lives a comfortable life, has a best friend who is like a sister, and feels no need to fall in love anytime soon.  But then, everything changes.  Airel starts feeling sick at random times for unexplained reasons, she witnesses a murder and the murderer sets his sights on her.  Worst of all, Michael Alexander enters her life stirring up emotions she’d rather not deal with.Airel discovers that she has some amazing abilities, and where exactly these abilities come from is even more amazing.  Through the weaving of Airel’s present day story, and the story of Kreios’ thousands of years ago, we learn their connection and what exactly is happening to Airel.  I love when a book weaves past and present together, but only if it’s done well, and this book was.   There were times I would find myself wondering how the story was going to pull together, and got a little anxious hoping that it wouldn’t fall flat.  No worries, it doesn’t.

I really liked Airel’s character.  I can tell you the specific line that had me hooked on the book, telling me I was going to like it.  It was when Airel said “It was him, Mr. Napkins, the same guy I saw at Moxie Java.  I was Miss Coffee Spill, but I sowanted to be Mrs. Napkins.”  Airel is witty, smart, and can hold her own when the time calls for it.  And I love how she often refers to Michael Alexander by his full name throughout the book – it’s cute.

I wasn’t sure about Michael.  There wasn’t much to him except that he was great looking and seemed to like Airel.  It added an air of mystery about him, but at the same time made me wonder what Airel liked so much about him besides his looks – and so suddenly.  He started to grow at the end, though, as the story comes together.  And I’m assuming we’ll get to know him better in the next book of the saga, since it is called Michael.

Some of my favorite quotes from the book:

“We can only love the way we were created to if we are first whole in ourselves.  If you drown in your feeling for someone, it will turn to obsession and it will cloud your mind to reality.”

“…I know that I will be fine.  I will be okay in the end.  Because I am enough.”

Overall, Airel was a pretty good book, and I’m looking forward to the second one.
