Valerie has always been different from her identical twin Veda. Tattooed, fiery, and foul-mouthed, Valerie acts on instinct, getting even with anyone who wrongs her passive and sensitive sister.

At twenty-two, Veda doesn’t want to seek revenge against the three young men who raped her. As for Val…

Val never could manage her anger well.

As far as Val sees it, the Compass Room is simply a quicker way for her to die—payment for the crime she feels no guilt over. There isn’t a reason to fight, not until a girl as broken as she is reminds Val of what it’s like to hope…

A few months ago I read The Wicked We Have Done and really enjoyed it, and I look forward to reading the sequel, The Vault of Our Sins. However, it’s Our Broken Sky that I was excited for. Sure, it’s only a novella between the two books, but it’s Valerie’s story!

In the first book we are introduced to Valerie, one of the prisoners who was chosen to enter the Compass Room. She can be fierce and hot-tempered, but she’s also loyal and protective of the ones she loves. Especially her twin sister, Veda. So when Veda is raped and becomes pregnant, Valerie sets out for revenge.

This book takes us back to just prior to the rape and moves forward through her time in the Compass Room. I loved getting Val’s perspective of what happened and the circumstances surrounding the incident; it’s infuriating and heartbreaking. Honestly, it would be extremely hard for me not to do what Valerie did.

Since we only got to see the Compass Room through Evalyn’s eyes during the first book, I enjoyed seeing it from Valeries. It wasn’t only that, it was the change and growth she went through from the experience. I was happy to get insight to her feelings for Jace and what an impact she made on her.

I’m not going to lie, I totally developed a girl-crush on Valerie as soon as she was introduced in the previous book. Now, I love her even more!

  1. I would have loved The Wicked We Have Done if it weren’t for a handful of things but I really didn’t want to read Our Broken Sky (while simultaneously wanting to). I mean we all know how it ends and that really broke my heart. Especially for Valerie considering all she’s been through 🙁

I am glad to hear you enjoyed this though, Christy!! 🙂

    Wonderful review!

  2. LOVE the cover, it’s gritty and gorgeous and makes me want to pick it up immediately! I kind of have a girl crush on Valerie too and I haven’t even met her yet. This sounds like a series I would really enjoy though Christy:)

  3. Oh wow, this sounds so intense! I’m certain I would feel the same as Valerie.

Btw, I had to read the title The Vault of Our Sins four times to *not* read it as The Fault in Our Stars!

  4. What is this book you speak of… The Wicked We Have Done??? It sounds fabulous!! Sounds like a mutual friend needs to read it to get psyched up to bury a certain future mother-in-law 😀 I will check that first book out.

From what I can tell from your review… yeah, I would totally go “Val” if anyone did what they did to Veda to someone I knew! I could live with it…

  5. I’m always excited for novellas! Even though they’re not a full length books, they are still pretty important, and I really enjoy reading them. I still haven’t read The Wicked We Have Done, but I hope I’ll get to read it soon as it seems like a pretty good book.

  6. I still have yet to read The Wicked We Have Done, sounds a lot darker than I thought it would be, and I don’t know if I’d like the novella since I can’t handle Rape in books unless it’s done well, you know? Otherwise, nope. And sometimes even then (like Faking Normal) sometimes I can’t finish it. 🙁
