topreads

Another year is gone. This makes me very sad. But now, I get to go back and reminisce about all the books I read in 2014 and attempt to pick the best ones.  We all know how difficult this can be, right?

I read 175 books, so in order for me to keep this list under control, I’m only including books that were published in 2014.

I’m not putting these in any particular order, except the first two. They tie for the top spot even though they are totally different types of books.

Here we go …

you

Goodreads | Review | Amazon

You by Caroline Kepnes is the craziest damn book!  I can’t even express how much I love it. I’ve forced a lot of people to read it, and every single one has loved it too. Even people who are extremely hard to suggest books for.

red rising

Goodreads | Review | Amazon

Red Rising by Pierce Brown is bloody brilliant! Like, off the charts. This was one of the first books I read this year, and I knew it was going to make this list before I even finished it. Even if this seems like a genre you aren’t interested in, take the chance!

burn for me

Goodreads | Review | Amazon

Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews blew me away. Yes, the cover isn’t great, but holy cow, this is a fantastic book.

17788403

Goodreads | Review | Amazon

Maybe Someday was the first book by Colleen Hoover I read, and it now sits up on a pedestal. Not to mention the fantastic original soundtrack that goes with it.

21899546

Goodreads | Review | Amazon

Love, in English by Karina Halle … yeah, just sigh.

the law of moses

Goodreads | Review | Amazon

The Law of Moses by Amy Harmon caught me by complete surprise. It’s unique, beautiful, and goes in a direction I wasn’t expecting.

fall of night

Goodreads | Review | Amazon

Fall of Night by Jonathan Maberry kicked ass! It’s the sequel to Dead of Night, but what put it over the top for me was the fact that it’s also a prequel to the Rot & Ruin series. So good!

don't forget about me

Goodreads | Review | Amazon

(Don’t You) Forget About Me by Kate Karyus Quinn really impressed me. I love unique books that make me feel like I’m working out a puzzle.

mud vein

Goodreads | Review | Amazon

Mud Vein is the first book by Tarryn Fisher I read, and it catapulted her to becoming one of my favorite authors. This woman’s writing twists me up heart and soul.

the undead pool20426917

Goodreads | Reviews | Amazon

The Undead Pool and The Witch with No Name by Kim Harrison – one of my most favorite series came to an end in 2014, and we got the last two books. The series went out on a very high note. It’s definitely a series worth checking out if you haven’t yet.

sixth graveseventh grave

Goodreads | Reviews | Amazon

Okay, so I technically read books 2-7 of the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones this year, but only the 6th and 7th were actually published in 2014. Even though they’re the only ones listed, all of the books rock!

kiss the skyhothouse flowerthriveaddicted after all

Goodreads | Reviews | Amazon

And of course, the Addicted series by Krista and Becca Ritchie! I devoured the whole series so far, but the four listed above are the ones that were published in 2014. One of the best series ever! Just make sure to read them in order. The Calloway Sisters books are very much part of the Addicted series. They are all heavily intertwined, not just jumping from one MC to the next.

So have you read any of these?

  1. The only books here I have read are the Addicted series ones. So many more that I have been dying to get to! Red Rising, Maybe Someday, Love in English, The Law of Moses, and Don’t You Forget About Me. I read like two pages of Mud Vein and didn’t think it would be for me. I just read The Opportunist by Tarryn Fisher and I dunno that her writing will be for me. It’s like super drama/trauma/emotional turmoil! I always wanted to start the Kim Harrison series. I’m also way behind on the Charley Davidson series. SO many books!

Oh man, that’s why I love Tarryn’s writing – she guts me! And I love the pain.

Obviously I’m going to tell you to read all of those other books! You’ll love The Law of Moses. And holy crap, you HAVE to read Red Rising. I recently read the 2nd book, and it is beyond fantastic.

Dude, Burn for Me rocked my damn socks off. I’m glad you squeezed it in. Carmel, you HAVE to read Red Rising. BAD. I just read the 2nd book, and it left me speechless. Seriously, get on it.

  3. I loved Burn For Me too! I was conflicted about You by Caroline Kepnes- at times I thought it was brilliant, and then some parts were kind of mehhh, but I’m definitely going to read the next book. Did you know that she is going to continue the story? The next book is called Love, I added it to tbr list today 🙂

I loved the madness of You. Oh yeah, Love is definitely top of my must-reads of 2015. I’m a little afraid though. I hope it’s as good as You.

  4. BURN FOR ME!!!! So good Christy! An unfortunate cover that doesn’t do the story justice to be sure, but it definitely didn’t stop my from picking the book up. Ilona Andrews can do no wrong for me. I have a number of the other ones on my list after reading your reviews, can’t wait to get to them:)

Yeah, I’m so glad I didn’t let the cover detour me. I would’ve missed out on so much awesome! Have you read Red Rising yet, Jenny? I think you’ll love it. And I’m not above begging you to read it. lol.

Karina’s newest book – The Pact – just came out and reached #5 on Amazon. It’s only $0.99 until the 1st, so get it. Ali and I are going to gang up on you to read The Law of Moses. You’ll like it.

  5. Haaah, I read Fall of Night not too long ago and loved it despite a few complaints here and there (I liked the writing in the first book better). I didn’t know it was a prequel to Rot and Ruin and so I had hoped there would be a more positive ending but noooooooooope ;__; I need to read Rot and Ruin now! Well, I already did, I mean the second book XD

Yeah it’s a direct prequel to the entire series. I’m really glad I read the R&R series first though, because there are a lot of things and characters that are in FoN. I think it just read better already having that info and knowing how they fit. And there are characters from his Joe Ledger series too.

Oh no, that sucks. In all fairness, he’s only 16 for a little while. The majority of Red Rising he’s 18, and in Golden Son he’s 20. I don’t listen to many audiobooks, partly because I’m afraid of the narrator negatively influencing my enjoyment of the book. I hope you read it soon because you need to hurry and experience the awesomeness of the 2nd book already. lol. Yeah, I was so happy with how Rachel’s story ended. I’m sure going to to miss everyone though.

LOL – Hey, the authors are the crazy ones for writing those books. I just enjoy the crazy. Oh hell, I guess I am a bit crazy too. 😀

  6. I just Fall of Night on someone else’s list yesterday and can’t believe I didn’t even know it was out.

Burn for Me was so good. Can’t wait for book #2!

SO Glad to see red Rising in your list Christy, I absolutely LOVED it and Can’t wait to read The Golden Son! I definitely agree about Maybe Someday, it was one of my favourite romances last year (I just had to edit that from “This year”!). I stil have to read YOU but from your strong recommendation, I’m really looking forward to it! AND SO MUCH YES to the Addicted series, it is so amazing.

I love the new layout too Christy, it’s very edgy! Happy New Year lovely.

  8. Ughh, now I have to go purchase YOU and see what’s so awesome about it. I also need to get around to reading the newest Andrews book that I purchased for less than 5 dollars at Wal-Mart! And check out the zombie books that I’ve seen around the web this year. Boy, you are making my TBR grow today! LOL Hope you enjoy just as many books in 2015 that you have in 2014!Happy New Year! 🙂
