As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers. Since Kate’s connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe—especially those closest to Kate.
As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered there, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given only twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war which could destroy everything she holds dear…
**I won’t get into details about Magic Breaks, but there might be very minor spoilers for the previous books.**
I’m all caught up! How bittersweet it is. This series is one I’m thankful I started reading late. I read the first book nine months ago and tried to pace myself and spread the seven books out as long as possible, but you understand how torturous that is if you’ve read these. Now I’m stuck in the waiting game with everyone else, desperate for the next fix.
Magic Breaks is the end of the big overall story arc, so I’m glad I was at least able to read the first seven books fairly close together. It’s really the perfect book to have to stop with, because it feels like a closing of a chapter in Kate’s life. And boy oh boy, was it ever a fabulous ride!
I absolutely adore Kate and Curran! They’re without a doubt one of my top three favorite fictional couples. I’m so incredibly particular about alpha men. They can easily irritate me, so saying I love Curran is a big deal. I don’t know if I’d love him as much if it weren’t for Kate though. It’s what they bring out in each other and how they are together that raises him above the rest. As for Kate, I love that woman no matter what! She is badass with snark done right.
As much as I love Kate and Curran together, I really appreciate that how the authors don’t have them glued at the hip 24/7. Scenes with Kate and other characters off together are some of my favorites. I can’t stress enough how amazingly awesome the secondary characters are. It almost feels wrong to call them secondary characters, because they are so rich and have such a strong presence. It’s impossible not to love them.
I swear, I always do a lot of laughing will reading this series, and Magic Breaks is no exception. There was so much highlighting and rereading going on just from Derek, Ascanio, and Desandra alone. Speaking of Desandra, damn I love that wolf! Oh, how I wish I could have drinks with Kate, Andrea and Desandra. Now that would be one helluva good time.
Then there’s the action that is exciting and engaging. I enjoy action, but sometimes it can be overdone and bore me. That’s not the case here. A lot of stuff goes down in this book, but it’s balanced out very well.
Seriously, I’m so happy with the way everything pulled together. Around the fifth book I started hoping everything would playout a certain way, but thought the chances were slim so didn’t get my hopes up too high. Boom! Andrews did it. So yeah, the ending was perfect to me. Ah, but I know there is still so much more to come!
This is a series you do not want to miss out on. It only gets better and better!
Woot! Hey I am coming for drinks with you all.

I honestly wish I’d started late! I’ve been patiently waiting for next installments since Magic Strikes, and it’s always such a torture. But Ilona and Gordon can do no wrong, so it’s always worth it. Oh, and I just read book 8 maybe two weeks ago and it was perfect. 🙂

I’ve started to wait for at least a couple books from a series to be out before I start. This one worked out perfectly. I’m so glad to hear the 8th book rocks. Not that I’d ever doubt Ilona Andrews. 😉
YAY I am so happy to hear you are loving this series! It’s my favorite Urban Fantasy!!
I agree with you about Kate & Curran’s relationship. I love how they are strong together, yet aren’t ALWAYS together.

Bittersweet, isn’t it? To catch up and have to wait for the next book? Worst when it’s over. Totally over. Sigh.

Andrea and Raph are seriously tied with them. I love them so much! You know, maybe they’re tied for first. There are other couples I love too, but yeah, K&C and A&R are the top, I guess. 😉
