Title: Married with Zombies
Author: Jesse Petersen
Published: September 1, 2010
Series: Living with the Dead #1
A heartwarming tale of terror in the middle of the zombie apocalypse.
Meet Sarah and David.
Once upon a time they met and fell in love. But now they’re on the verge of divorce and going to couples’ counseling. On a routine trip to their counselor, they notice a few odd things – the lack of cars on the highway, the missing security guard, and the fact that their counselor, Dr. Kelly, is ripping out her previous client’s throat.
Meet the Zombies.
Now, Sarah and David are fighting for survival in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. But, just because there are zombies, doesn’t mean your other problems go away. If the zombies don’t eat their brains, they might just kill each other.
The Importance of Being Zombie
Hello everyone and thanks to Christy here at Love of Books for asking me to visit today! So who am I and why the hell am I here? Well, I’m Jesse Petersen and I’m the author of the Living With the Dead series from Orbit books. It’s a post (well more DURING) apocalyptic zombie tale of near-divorce, almost death and saving your marriage one zombie apocalypse at a time.
Lots of times, people ask how I come up with my ideas. With MARRIED WITH ZOMBIES, the first in the Living With the Dead books, it was easy. I loved Zombieland and on the way home from seeing the movie I said to my husband, “Wouldn’t it be funny if a couple was about to get divorced and they went to visit their marriage counselor and she had been turned into a zombie?” “Yes,” he said, hardly looking up from what he was doing. Then I added, “And wouldn’t it be funny if they had to use her marital advice to get out of the zombie attack and to safety?” “Yes,” he said again. “Someone should write that,” I sighed.
Then he reminded me that I’m a writer.
So I went from there. I wrote a zombie book, something entirely outside of the genre of fiction I had been writing for almost ten years at that point. I wrote it to entertain myself. If I thought it was funny, it went in. If I had questions about something, I answered them in the story. It was hella fun and I had a great time because I’m a geek and I love zombie stories and I never pictured myself writing one until I wrote one.
And then… my literary agent got ahold of it. And to my surprise, she loved it too. It sold to Orbit Books and came out in 2010. Shockingly, I had not only written, but published a zombie book that turned into a zombie series.
The best part of all of it? That I got to meet and make friends with a ton of readers who liked the same kind of zombie stories I did (snarky, funny, violent zombie stories). They read my book and actually liked it!
I’m not writing zombie stories right now. My upcoming release is THE MONSTERS IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, the second book in a new series about a bunch of real monsters who have a support group in a New York City church basement. But every once in a while a zombie shambles through my brain and says, “Hey, what if there were zombies on a cruise ship?” And one day away I’ll go again and another zombie book may materialize. In the meantime, I’ll keep loving zombie movies and books and enjoying the fun that comes with meeting other people like me.
So what’s your favorite apocalypse trope? Or zombie trope?
A Facebook application once told Jesse Petersen that she’d only survive a day in a zombie outbreak, but she doesn’t believe that. For one, she’s a good shot and two, she has an aversion to bodily fluids, so she’d never go digging around in zombie goo. Until the zombie apocalypse, she lives in the Tucson with her husband and two cats and writes snarky urban fantasy about monsters and zombies.
