Hi everyone! Today I have my buddy Marie Landry on the blog sharing her top 10 favorite romantic movies. I read Blue Sky Days, her debut novel last year and enjoyed it a lot. You can read my review HERE.

A year after graduating from high school, nineteen-year-old Emma Ward feels lost. Working two part-time jobs to save money for college hasn’t helped her make decisions about her future, so she decides it’s time for a change. She leaves home to live with her free-spirited, slightly eccentric Aunt Daisy in a small town that makes Emma feel like she’s stepped back in time.
When Emma meets Nicholas Shaw, everything changes – he’s unlike anyone she’s ever met before, the kind of man she didn’t even know existed in the 21st century. Between Daisy and Nicholas, Emma feels like she belongs somewhere for the first time in her life, and realizes that you don’t always need a plan – sometimes life steers you where you’re meant to be.
First, I’d like to thank Christy for asking me to be part of this amazing event. I’m truly honoured!
When it comes to romance books and movies, I can’t get enough. From the time I was little I swooned over relationships like Robin Hood and Maid Marion in Disney’s Robin Hood, and the forbidden love of Sarah and Jareth the Goblin King in Labyrinth. I’m definitely what you’d call a hopeless romantic.
And while I have eclectic tastes in both movies and books, I’d likely pick up a romantic comedy before anything else. I love the banter, the tension, and even the predictability – as long as it’s a good love story with great characters. Since a couple of my favourite romantic comedies have sparked ideas for stories, I thought I would do a top ten list of my favourite romantic comedies.
Bridget Jones Diary
While I love both movies (and I’m super excited there’s going to be a third!), the first is my favourite. I think it’s so great that Bridget isn’t this perfect, beautiful bombshell who has it all together, and that her love life (and life in general) is full of ups and downs. For me, it’s one of the most realistic romantic comedies. Plus, it has Colin Firth and Hugh Grant, which makes just about any movie a winner in my eyes.
I’ve been watching Pretty Woman since I was little, so I was thrilled to see Julia Roberts and Richard Gere back together. They have great chemistry, and this movie is just so funny and sweet and different. It makes me laugh, it makes me cry, and it has a fantastic cast of secondary characters that are just as important as the main characters (which is something I look for in books as well as movies).
The Wedding Singer
As much as I like Adam Sandler I find some of his goofier movies a bit tiresome, but The Wedding Singer has just the right amount of silliness paired with romance and a really fun story line. I never get tired of this movie.
Princess Diaries 2
This is the rare sequel that I loved even more than the original. It was so much fun watching Mia and Nicholas’s love/hate relationship. I also enjoyed the side love story of Queen Clarice and Joe. And, confession: this movie is where I got the name Nicholas for the love interest in my debut novel, BLUE SKY DAYS.
This is just one of those movies that appeals to the romantic in me – a serendipitous meeting of two strangers, then leaving things up to fate and watching things play out while rooting for the characters. Plus John Cusack…yum.
This movie is basically my secret fantasy played out on the screen – going to England, staying in a little country cottage and meeting and falling in love with Jude Law? Where do I sign? Plus I’ll admit I’ve had a girl crush on Kate Winslet since I was 13 and first saw Titanic. This movie is just so funny and I love the little side stories – it explores other types of love and not just romantic love.
Did I mention I love Hugh Grant? And Julia Roberts? Hugh often plays overly confident jerks, but I love that his character in Notting Hill is this bumbling guy who is real and tends to embarrass himself, but is also willing to put himself out there. Plus it has some fantastic one-liners that always get me laughing.
Sweet Home Alabama
Another really sweet, funny, cute movie that’s more realistic than some because it’s full of ups and downs and the love part doesn’t come easy. And, not gonna lie, I do enjoy the man candy in this movie in the form of Josh Lucas and Patrick Dempsey.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Besides the fact that this movie was filmed in Canada and the cast consists mainly of Canadian actors, I love it for a lot of the same reasons I love Bridget Jones: Toula wasn’t perfect, she’d lived a very sheltered life, and the idea of dating and falling in love was foreign to her. It was also nice to see a movie about different cultures and the struggles that can come with dating when there are ‘rules’ involved.
More Hugh Grant and Colin Firth, plus a myriad of other amazing actors. This movie is a love story in every sense of the word, because it’s not just about romantic love, it explores other relationships.
So those are my top ten favourite romantic comedies. It was really hard to narrow it down to ten since this is my favourite genre. What are some of your favourite funny and romantic movies?
Nice picks, Marie! I used to have a crush on John Cusack right after I saw him in Jack Bull. It was more his character in that movie than it was for him, though.
