With twelve hellhounds after her, pregnant Charley Davidson takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can’t get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. But after months of being cooped up there, Charley is ready to pop. Both metaphorically and literally since she is now roughly the size of a beached whale. Fortunately, a new case has captured her attention, one that involves a murder on the very grounds the team has taken shelter upon. A decades-old murder of the newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows is almost enough to pull her out of her doldrums.

Charley's been forbidden to step foot off the sacred grounds. While the angry hellhounds can’t traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders. They have the entire team on edge, especially Reyes. And if Charley didn’t know better, she would swear Reyes is getting sick. He grows hotter with every moment that passes, his heat scorching across her skin every time he’s near, but naturally he swears he’s fine.

While the team searches for clues on the Twelve, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they’ve accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. But the good feelings don’t last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life….

Oh, how I love this series to pieces! The multitude of amazing characters and abundance of humor definitely tops the list of reasons why, but there’s just so much more that makes the series great. All those factors are very much accounted for in Eighth Grave After Dark.

The setting is the same place throughout the entire book, which has the potential to make it feel a bit stagnant. However, there’s a lot that goes down! Even though Charley is stuck living on the property of an abandoned convent, there’s plenty to keep her busy. Charley can’t go out on investigations? Hell, they’ll come to her. And like usual, those threads are pulled into the bigger story so well.

Charley Davidson drives me crazy sometimes. In a good way. I swear, she always finds herself in some sort of predicament. It’s extremely entertaining, a bit of a Lucille Ball thing going on. Only more badass, and demons are involved.

I’m glad that all our other  favorite characters were present and played an important role. I especially love when the guys are together … Reyes, Garrett, and Osh. Okay, more specifically Osh. Whew, I’m so glad Charley reacted the way she did to that thing he does, because she’s not the only one. Hot! There were some surprises, as well! I have been waiting through seven books to find out what’s up with Mr. Wong, and the time finally came. Oh, and is it ever good.

Eighth Grave After Dark is definitely a game changer. Jones has done a good job progressing the overall arc throughout the previous books, and it feels like it has led up to this. Like shit just got real. Now it’s evolving into something more, something bigger. While I’m excited and loving it, I’m also super anxious. I’m ready though, so bring it on!

  1. I only ever read the first 2 books in this series, but I enjoyed it so much so I definitely need to get back to it. Especially with everyone raving on and on about it. I feel like I would be fangirling with you guys do. 🙂
Charley was crazy in the first 2 books itself, it’s good to know she hasn’t changed one bit.
    Fun review, Christy! 🙂
