Welcome to the Apocalypse. Please enjoy…
“Cover your ears, baby,” Fi whispered to Kiara below her. She crouched below the window ledge, peering out. She tried to force herself to observe…to only see the scene as a source of information. Her breath caught. She was failing.
Cars blazed in the street, and the flickering glow on the horizon suggested that homes did as well. Screams continued to fill the air, along with intermittent gunfire. With each sound, Fi felt herself flinch a little less, as her brain grew weary of the adrenaline.
A group of men jogged past. All wore the same black ammunition vests and they moved as a group. The attackers. They must be. They were citizens, not soldiers, but they were heavily armed and they were ransacking the town. Still, it was impossible to tell if they were the only attackers, because gunshots continued to come from all sides.
Suddenly one of them turned and headed for the garage. Fi gasped and dropped to the floor. She pressed her back against the door and crushed Kiara to her. Did he see her? What if he saw her? The possible tragedies were endless. Her heart raced as she struggled to maintain her grasp on her fear. No one breathed as his footsteps drew near, and a flashlight panned over the inside of the garage.
